This week in sci-fi news brings you the following topics of interests: American soldiers battle in an alien gladiatorial arena, new images from the A&E remake of “The Andromeda Strain”, more aliens means more post-apocalyptic fun, a sci-fi game becomes a movie, and it’s not by a guy named Uwe Boll (sorry, Uwe), “X-Files 2″ stuff, Alex Proyas’ “Dark City” returns in style, and what’s that fat kid from “Superbad” got to do with the latest “Transformers” movie? Also, the latest “Starship Troopers” movie gets a DVD release date, the first poster for the cool-sounding “Push”, and another casting confirmation for The Bay’s “Transformers 2″.
Sci-Fi Gladiators Fight to the Death in Arena – American soldiers get snatched from the battlefields by aliens to fight in a sci-fi arena. And you thought YOU had a bad day.
New Images from X-Files 2 – Yet more images from the poorly titled movie. Seriously? “I Want to Believe”? I want to throw up just [...]

Got an email asking about “Babylon A.D.”, so I backtracked any news I could find on it via the web. The latest update on Vin Diesel’s sci-fi actioner is old news — earlier this month, it was reported that Fox studios would be delivering two versions of the movie into theaters, with U.S. audiences getting a shorter version, although it was not immediately clear how much shorter the American version will be. What is known is that the European version (aka the uncut version) is pretty bloody long, with the estimated running length of a whopping two hours and 40 minutes. Should a movie without the words “Lord of the Rings” or “directed by Steven Spielberg” somewhere in the credits be that long?
Via, the other news is that the film has had its release date pushed back — way back. How far back? From the initial date of February 2008 all the way back to August 2008. This is [...]

Boy, does Vin Diesel need a hit or does Vin Diesel need a hit? I’m not sure starring in a French-produced science fiction movie will do it, but hey, hope springs eternal, right? Diesel’s latest is “Babylon A.D.”, and the guys over at FirstShowing.com have found the first poster for the film (thumbnail to your left, bigger version below). It sells its biggest draw — Vin Diesel, which at this point, I’m not all that sure is all that big of a draw. But hey, maybe I’m just being overly pessimistic.
Veteran-turned-mercenary Thoorop (Diesel) takes the high-risk job of escorting a woman from Russia to China. Little does he know that she is host to an organism that a cult wants to harvest in order to produce a genetically modified Messiah.
Starring Vincent Cassel, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Melanie Thierry, Gerard Depardieu, and directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, a French actor who is making his directorial debut with “Babylon A.D.”

The guys over at VinXperience has your first look at the upcoming Vin Diesel sci-fi actioner “Babylon A.D.”, a $80 million dollar movie adapted from the novel “Babylon Babies” by Maurice Dantec. It’s actually not much of a teaser trailer (to download it, right click here and save), more like behind-the-scenes footage intercut with some trailer material. It actually looks like a very action-heavy movie, and Michelle Yeoh has a bigger role in it than you might think. Coming off flops like “The Chronicles of Riddick” and “Find Me Guilty”, you gotta wonder how many more $80 million dollar movies Vin Diesel will get to front.
The 20th Century Fox and Canal Plus project was inspired by Maurice Dantec novel “Babylon Babies.” The story is set in the near future and concerns genetic manipulation. In the book, a mercenary (Vin Diesel) is charged with delivering a young woman from Russia to Canada. He learns that she has been manipulated by a [...]
