Stick a fork in her, she’s done, Jim. That’s coming from Robert Rodriguez himself in regards to his much-ballyhooed remake of “Barbarella”, which was set to star his fiance Rose McGowan. (They are still engaged, right? I can’t keep track of these crazy kids.) Rodriguez tells MTV that after Universal balked at his $80 million-plus price tag for the remake, he got a $75 million dollar offer from a German company to make the sci-fi flick, but the catch was he had to go to Germany for production and post. Rodriguez has now resigned himself to never getting the film made.
Bemoans the Rodster to MTV:
“It was a real bummer,” he admitted. “We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like. It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy—almost like that [1981 animated] movie, ‘Heavy Metal’—version of a ‘Star Wars’ movie. Something that no one ever could get to see. It was gonna be really great.”
And so, [...]

The New York Post’s Page Six site is reporting that Robert Rodriguez and fiancee Rose McGowan have split up, barely two years after entering a torrid affair while the two were making “Grindhouse” in 2006. Of course, we are talking about Page Six here, not Variety or The Hollywood Reporter, so take it as gossip and nothing more. In Hollywood, “splitting up” doesn’t mean what it means in the real world; these people have affairs the way some of us eat cheesecake — we can’t resist it when it’s presented right in front of our faces, even though we know we should, then later on, we come to regret it, and go back to salads. Or something like that. I was never good at analogies.
Here’s Page Six’s gossipy column on the supposed split:
But sources say the couple, who we reported last October were engaged, have split, partly over the problems Rodriguez had finding financing for “Barbarella” – the 1968 [...]

As they say, “love conquers all”. Or is that, “love is blind”? Either way, Rose McGowan (pictured, below) says she’s gonna be Barbarella (pictured, left) in the big-budget remake of the classic Jane Fonda movie even if she has to beat the crap out of everyone to convince them that she’s the only one for the role. That, and because her would-be husband Robert Rodriguez is directing, and he’s dead set on having her star no matter what anyone says, including, reportedly, Universal (that story here). McGowan says as much to MTV, telling them that she’s still the star of the upcoming remake and that she “has the contracts” to prove it.
More:
Not just the contracts, either, but sets and costumes, and a whole “lot of pre-production work,” McGowan revealed, hinting that the flick is actually quite a bit further along than previously speculated.
“Half of the sets have been built. The costumes are done,” the actress confessed, adding with a [...]

In case you haven’t heard, Austin director Robert Rodriguez (”Grindhouse”, the “Spy Kids” movies) was supposed to helm the updated remake of the Jane Fonda sci-fi camper “Barbarella”, and last we heard, the film was being fast-tracked for a 2008 (pre-strike) production. Not so fast, apparently. According to an unnamed source who spoke to The New York Observor, Rodriguez’s insistence on casting Rose McGowan, his new fiance as Barbarella has made Universal Studios drop the picture. They don’t believe Rose can carry the movie, but Rodriguez claims it’s all a misunderstanding, and that the sticking point is really the budget. Rodriguez wants more, Universal wants less.
More:
“It’s sort of embarrassing for everyone involved,” the source said. “No one thinks Rose can carry the movie, but Robert won’t listen.
Mr. Rodriguez denied this, claiming the issue was simply one of budget. “Universal had initially signed on for $60 million,” he told the Transom, “but then when we were done with the script it [...]

The guys over at Freeze Dried Movies have been hearing rumors that Jessica Biel may be playing the female villain in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming remake of “Barbarella”, and that this may mean a chick flight of epic proportions against Rose McGowan, who was also rumored to be playing Barbarella herself as recently as a few weeks ago. Then again, it’s all rumor, so it’s probably bunk, but hey, it’s Monday so why not indulge in a little bit of totally unsubstantiated and probably untrue movie gossip? That’s what we’re here for!
More from FDM:
Of course, this is not the first time Biel’s name has been mentioned in relation to the remake. She has always been a fan favorite for the title role, along with fellow Jessica, Alba (and Alba herself let it slip in a recent interview with MTV that she believes Rose McGowan would be filling Jane Fonda’s boots in the lead). Now the word on the street is that [...]

For some reason, Rose McGowan is in hot demand. I’m not sure why, though. She’s a mildly decent actress who has been more famous for wearing a see-through dress to an MTV awards show and dating androgynous freak rocker Marilyn Manson than for her roles. But apparently even a leading role in a box office disaster like the recent “Grind House” is enough to get you back into the spotlight, as here comes the latest casting rumors: Rose McGowan as Barbarella in the recent remake of the movie of the same name to be written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, who directed McGowan in said “Grind House”. Apparently the rumor was given birth by the fact that Rodriguez is currently using McGowan as a test “model” for the movie.
More from Joblo.com:
According to a JoBlo scooper we’ll call ‘Zeiss’, there may be some truth to that. It seems that Rodriguez and his Troublemaker Studios are gearing up for production, and have [...]

Is Halle Berry going to step into Jane Fonda’s futuristic go go boots and have crazy sex with aliens and robots for Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming remake of the sci-fi (and campy) erotica “Barbarella”? Maybe, maybe not. That’s the word from the blokes over at Joblo.com, who heard it from some guy who heard it from another guy, who claims to get the news from his girlfriend from Canada who no one has ever seen, but he insist she exists. In any case, rather this is real or not, Rodriguez is in pre-production on the remake, and anyone who steps into the lead role will end up embarrassing themselves anyway. Hey, now that I think about it, Halle Berry would be great for the role!
Here’s the plot of the original:
The year is 40,000. Peacefully floating around in zero-gravity Barbarella (Jane Fonda) is suddenly interrupted by a call from the President of Earth. A young scientist, Durand Durand, is threatening the ancient [...]

I don’t think Frank Miller has done anything that I haven’t loved, or at least, liked a whole lot. He’s just a great writer, period, comic books notwithstanding. I even found some snippets of “Robocop 2″, which he co-wrote the screenplay for, to be damn near brilliant stuff. The guys over at Rotten Tomatoes caught up with Frank at the Cannes Film Festival, and they have some news on almost every front that Frank is currently working in, including the oft-talked about (but as yet unseen) “Batman vs. Al Qaeda” graphic novel, aka “Holy Terror, Batman!”
So, what’s the deal with “Batman vs. Al Qaeda”? I’ve been dying to see this thing since it was announced eons ago.
Still, work proceeds at pace on Miller’s new graphic novel, rather controversially called “Batman vs. Al Qaeda.” “It’s bound to offend just about everybody,” Miller laughed, “I’m about 100 pages into it and I’ve got fifty more to go.”
Sweet. He’s 3/4ths of the way [...]

Fresh of the box office disaster of “Grind House”, Robert Rodriguez is jumping into more friendly fare — barely dressed babes in space, also known as “Barbarella”, the remake of the 1968 original starring Jane Fonda. Apparently producer Dino De Laurentiis himself came to Rodriguez to sell him on directing the science fiction remake, says the Hollywood Reporter. Now Rodriguez, whose past credits include “Sin City” and the “Desperado” series, will write the script with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, with an eye towards a 2008 release.
“Barbarella” tells the story of a female mercenary who roams across the universe of a distant future, undertaking missions that require physical fearlessness, ingenuity and sensuality. The character debuted in 1962 in a French graphic magazine written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest and was known for her many adventures, often involving sex. There also was a musical produced in 2004.
