If his work on 2007’s “28 Weeks Later” is any indication, I don’t give the characters of “Bioshock” a whole lot of chances of coming out of the movie alive. That is, if Variety is correct and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo indeed signs on to helm Universal Pictures’ live-action adaptation of the popular videogame, replacing original director Gore Verbinski. The “Pirates” director will stay on as a producer, since at this point it probably doesn’t pay to jump ship, not after the time he’s spent trying to get the movie off the ground, even bypassing directing “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″.
According to the trade, Fresnadillo, who made his U.S. debut with the zombie sequel “28 Weeks Later”, is currently in talks to board the project, which has hit some delays due to budget concerns by the studio. In order to keep costs lower (the film’s budget has since ballooned to $160 million, which apparently even the studio is unwilling to front [...]

Maybe he shouldn’t have bowed out of directing the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie after all, because Gore Verbinski’s live-action adaptation of the videogame “Bioshock” has hit rough waters of the dollar kind. With the film’s budget having ballooned to $160 million, Universal Pictures has declared no mas and told Verbinski to get the budget down or they ain’t making it. For his part, Verbinski has agreed (what else is he gonna do?), so now the studio and director are looking at ways to save cost, like moving the production overseas.
According to Variety, moving the production overseas would be primarily to take advantage of tax credits for film production, such as in Australia, where a lot of big-budget Hollywood productions are going nowadays. Although for “Bioshock”, they’re looking at London as a possible replacement.
Scripted by John Logan (“Gladiator”), the live-action “Bioshock” would take place in an underwater city called Rapture, where a pilot crash-lands near a secret entrance [...]

Everybody knows Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are making a “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″, even if it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet. The prospect of the sequel not happening is about zil to none, though at this point it’s looking like it might take a while. Likewise, Johnny Depp is definitely coming back as Jack Sparrow, even if Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not. So what about Gore Verbinksi, the director behind all three “Pirates” films? Ol Gore was talking about coming back too, but he has now officially announced that he’s done with the “Pirates” movies.
Variety reports that Verbinski has told Bruckheimer and Disney that he’s off “Pirates 4″, saying:
“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.”
Instead of Pirates 4, Verbinski will be finishing up his “Rango” [...]

The movie version of the popular game BioShock was rumored to be headed to the big screen for a while now, and it appears as if it’ll finally happen, with the trades reporting that Gore Verbinski will be directing the film for Universal, and with the prestige that Verbinski’s name currently boasts after the success of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, this thing is pretty much in the bag. Now all they have to do is actually make it.
Variety has the announcement:
“Bioshock” takes place in an underwater city based on the free market principles of Ayn Rand, but things have gone disastrously wrong. Players control a pilot who crash-lands at a secret entrance to the city, called Rapture, and is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will is not as free as he’d thought.
“I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that’s cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential,” said Verbinski. “Of all [...]

Popular games turned into movies are nothing new; popular games turned into movies that actually ends up being good? Yeah, that’s pretty rare, especially when you have one man (and you know who you are) going around trying to single-handedly destroy the very notion of a “good movie” being produced out of videogames. The latest game in line to get the movie treatment is “BioShock”.
More about the game:
BioShock is a first-person shooter video game by 2K Boston/2K Australia—previously known as Irrational Games—designed by Ken Levine. Set in an alternative history 1960, the game places the player in the role of a plane crash survivor named Jack, who must explore the underwater Objectivist-dystopian city of Rapture, and survive attacks by the mutated beings and mechanical drones that populate it. The game incorporates elements found in role-playing and survival horror games, and is described by the developers and Levine as a “spiritual successor” to their previous titles in the System Shock series.
