Sports movies in general have a formula they tend to follow in order to capture attention. First, they have to be about winners, otherwise most people don’t tend to give them any notice, at all. Who wants to cheer on a loser, right? Second, they have to have real conflict. Some are about the conflagration on the playing field. An overwhelming battle against a mammoth team with all the chips stacked against them. Others are about personal conflict. A small town, every man who gets to play in the “big leagues” for one glorious game. A handicapped man who finally realizes his lifelong dream of putting on the uniform for the very first time.
Or, in the case of The Rocket: The Legend Of Rocket Richard, the battle for dignity and respect against the social injustices of racism. What sets this movie far apart from the others is simple, it never uses the words racism or discrimination (except maybe on [...]

(Movie Review by Christiaan Harden) When Debbie Melnyk and Nick Caine, two self-proclaimed progressive liberal filmmakers, set out to make a biography celebrating Michael Moore, they began as admirers and fans. After discovering a number of otherwise unknown facts about his documentaries, however, they ended up feeling, in their own words, ‘disappointed and disillusioned’. Provocative and thoughtful, their documentary “Manufacturing Dissent” provides a measured and welcomed alternative to the myriad of right-wing anti-Moore polemics widely available on the other side of the Atlantic. “Manufacturing Dissent” is an admirably honest and thoroughly rewarding piece of documentary filmmaking, and a must not only for fans of Moore, but for anybody interested in where the boundaries of documentary filmmaking ethics lie.
Despite attempts by the filmmakers to avoid a “Roger and Me”-style contributor chase, “Manufacturing Dissent” bares more than a passing resemblance to Moore’s breakthrough 1989 documentary. Repeated attempts are made by Melnyk and Caine, who are also husband and wife, to secure [...]

Originally titled “Pain Killer” (before a certain TV show got greenlit by the Sci Fi Channel), “Deaden” stars John Fallon as a former undercover cop who goes apeshit when his former bike gang invades his apartment, assaults him to within an inch of his life, rapes his pregnant wife with a baseball bat, cuts his unborn child out of her belly, and then shoots a crossbow bolt through his forehead. You know, the usual Sunday morning stuff. Relieved of his ability to feel pain with the help of a neverending supply of strong pain killers, and summoning the spirit of a royally pissed off Charles Bronson from “Death Wishes” 1 through 4 (since as we all know, “Death Wish 5: The Face of Death” is complete bullshit), Rane goes on the kind of bloody rampage that would make The Bride from the “Kill Bill” films blush.
If you are wondering if there is more to “Deaden” beyond the plot description above, [...]

There are certain films in which logic is some sort of abstract notion, something to be considered but never truly taken seriously. “Enter…Zombie King” is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, one of these films. It’s a giddy, weird effort that foregoes any attempts at reasonable thought in favor of giving the audience a wild and fun romp with those lovable living dead. Zombie and wrestling fans will rejoice and sink their rotten teeth into this bizarre cross-pollination of a film, if for no other reason except it’s something they won’t see every day — thank God.
“Enter…Zombie King” opens with the world in a perfect state of harmony — except for that little problem about a zombie plague, that is. It’s here that an enterprising renegade wrestler (is there any other kind?) named Tiki plans to stage a steel cage zombie match, using the zombies he’s captured and locked in the back of his U-Haul as unwitting combatants. This [...]

If there’s one thing about Canadian filmmaker Vincenzo Natali that you can take to the bank, it’s that the guy really, really likes to make movies that challenge him as a director. No one gets better mileage out of so little than Natali, who has done wonders with the resource-challenged “Cube”, the minimally budgeted “Elevated”, and the moderately budgeted “Cypher”, the budget of which is probably more than all of Natali’s previous movies combined. With “Nothing”, Natali has brought back his favorite muse, David Hewlett (who can currently be seen fighting aliens on “Stargate: Atlantis”), for an adventure in strangeness.
Essentially a movie about two losers named Dave (Hewlett) and Andrew (co-writer Andrew Miller), “Nothing” follows the two men as their lives fall apart even more than it already has up to this point. To wit: Dave is framed for embezzlement at work and Andrew is accused of molestation by a vindictive girl scout (don’t ask). As the world, the [...]

As a sequel to two cult favorites, “Ginger Snaps Back” (aka “Ginger Snaps 3: The Beginning”) is a 2½-star film. As a standalone movie without any ties to the series, it manages 3 stars. Unfortunately for the film, everyone knows it’s the third installment of Canada’s best horror franchise (or is that only horror franchise?), and no matter how creative they get with the title, that “3″ still belongs at the end of it.
“Ginger Snaps Back” returns its two stars, Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle, playing sisters Brigitte and Ginger, respectively, to the werewolf hunting ground. The setting this time around is the wilderness of 19th century Canada, where the orphaned sisters trek their way across a frosty landscape to an isolated fort besieged by werewolves. The sisters are joined by a mysterious Indian warrior called the Hunter (Nathaniel Arcand) who seems to know what is going on and how to stop it. But while the occupants of [...]

Canadian filmmaker Vincenzo Natali burst onto the movie scene with the release of “Cube”, but has since moved onto bigger (although not necessarily better) things ala the big-budgeted “Cypher”. “Elevated” is a 1997 short film by Natali, running 20 minutes total, with 3 of those minutes saved for end credits. It’s definitely a creative short, with the type of personalities clashes that made “Cube” memorable.
“Elevated” stars Natali regular (and high school chum) David Hewlett as Hank, a security guard in a lush condo. When we first see Hank, he’s running through the condo’s underground garage, yelling at nervous tenant Ellen (Vicki Papavs) and the shady Ben (Bruce McFee) to hold the elevator that they’re about to step out off. Hank bursts into the elevator and immediately uses his access card to send the elevator up to the highest floor. His reasoning? Monsters are chasing him. But even more suspicious, Hank is packing a switchblade and there’s blood — although [...]

“Abandon hope all who enters.” This should be the tagline for the “Ginger Snaps” franchise because it fits the films to a “T”. There is almost no hope, no ray of light, not even a sparkle of possibility in any of the two films. And that’s exactly what makes them so different and just so good. As was the case with the original, “Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed” is really a gritty teen drama about the perversity of human nature in the guise of a horror film.
I will admit to not remembering too many details about “Ginger Snaps”, which came out four years ago and became a cult hit — at least a big enough hit to warrant this sequel and an upcoming prequel. What I do remember is that the film had a fantastic sense of itself, and offered up a clever metaphor for the pain of growing up by way of standard werewolf conventions. I also remembered that [...]

This leaves us with Claire Westby as Lara Croft-wannabe Argenta and Alison Terriault as lesbian vampire Nemesis. Joining the show is Stephan Eng as Ferriden, a whiny dude with a snazzy eye patch. And no, neither Westby nor Terriault has gotten the hang of this whole acting thing.
It goes without saying that I wouldn’t even waste the 80 minutes required to watch “Meat Market 2″, a shot-on-video low-budget production, if not for my undying love of all things zombie-related. To be frank there is just so many things wrong with “Meat Market 2″ that had I not possess this irrational fondness for the genre, I could not, in all honestly, sit through the film’s first 10 minutes, much less the [...]

Writer/director Jesse Warn’s “Nemesis Game” is a mild diversion. It’s not bad enough to be useless, but it’s also not quite good enough to surpass average. Wait, does that make sense? Well yes, if you’ve seen “Nemesis Game”, which stars Carly Pope as Sara, a college student who is searching for the meaning of life via games involving riddles. Her playing partner is older man Vern (Adrian Paul), who looks surprisingly buff for a guy who runs a comic book store.
In about 90 minutes of running time, we watch Sara get deeper and deeper into a mysterious game involving murder and a clearly loony (or is she?) woman name Emily Gray (Rena Owen), who just might be the creepiest woman to ever be captured on celluloid. Since the accidental passing of her mother, Sara has been a social outcast — or at least that’s what every character in the movie keeps telling us, although it’s amusing to note that [...]

I know it’s something of a cheat to call Brian Clement’s zombie opus “Meat Market” a foreign film, since while the film is made by Canadians in (most likely) Canada, it’s not really a “Canadian movie”. The questionable cataloging of the movie aside, “Meat Market” is a no-budget Zombies Attack movie shot on video, and as a result “Market” suffers from every known pitfall of no-budget filmmaking, but in the end still manages to impress — if just slightly.
Claire Westby and Paul Pedrosa stars as Argenta and Shahrokh, respectively, two gun-toting ex-bounty hunters who used to work for an Evil Corporation responsible for the sudden zombie plague. Realizing what’s in store for their fair city, Argenta and Shahrokh have stock up on canned foods and weapons and found a sort of bomb shelter (?) outside of town. Sure enough, the town is overrun by zombies that, as it turns out, are infected by — well, does it really matter? [...]

Deepa Mehta’s “Bollywood/Hollywood” is so obviously a parody of Hollywood romantic comedies and Bollywood melodrama that once you realize this, everything else is irrelevant. Like the South Korean movie “Resurrection of the Little Match Girl”, “Bollywood/Hollywood” loses its charm as soon as you realize what the purpose of the movie is. Beyond this great “insight” (yes, I am being sarcastic), you can only hope for a couple of chuckles to tie you over to the inevitable ending. (And even if the film admits the inevitable ending is inevitable on purpose, the result is still the same — a big, “Eh, whatever.”)
Here’s the basic rundown of “Bollywood”: Indian family member Rahul (Rahul Khanna) is ordered by his highly traditional family to marry. Since the family dismisses Rahul’s first choice, a white girl who the sassy grandmother calls a “big white whore” (or something to that affect), Rahul goes in search of an Indian girl to make the family happy. (And depending on your level of taste or sense of humor, you will either weep at how bad the movie is, or chuckle at how bad the movie is. Either way, you’ll come to the conclusion that this is a really, really bad movie.)
Jesus Christ being played by an actor who can’t be more than 5 feet tall, taking on an army of lesbian vampires in Goth makeup and way too many tattoos. (What is it with lesbian biker vampire chicks in low-budget Canada films? Is there a union for such typecasting?)
Jesus Christ trading in his traditional robe and sandals for ’80s chic, including earrings, then teaming up with a Mexican wrestler name Santos to take on the aforementioned lesbian vampires and their leader, Johnny Golgotha.
I’m not entirely sure when I personally took notice of the Redemption Sports Movie, but I’d say it started with Disney’s “The Mighty Ducks”, although it’s reasonably certain the genre goes way back. The Canadian movie “Men With Brooms” is as standard a Redemption Sports Movie as you’ll find, but that in itself isn’t a bad thing, since most RSM provides plenty of laughs and heartfelt moments. This, despite the fact that most RSM movies are also heavily clich’d, wholly predictable, and by movie’s end it’s guaranteed everyone who is supposed to love someone has loved that person, and all the bad guys get their comeuppance.
“Men With Brooms” stars Paul Gross (TV’s “Due South”) as Chris Cutter, a prodigal son who returns to his small hometown 10 years after leaving it, when his old curling coach dies from a stroke. In his video will, Cutter’s coach’s last request is that his students reform their team and compete in a [...]

In what can only amount to cosmic irony, movies have begun to use the popularity of Reality TV as inspiration for their own plot; if Reality TV was meant to satirize real life, movies are now satirizing Reality TV as a false vehicle for satirizing real life. Get it? “Series 7: The Contenders” turned shows like “Survivor” into a blood-and-guts version; as did the Japanese film “Battle Royale”, about students trapped on an island, with only one possible survivor allowed to leave alive.
The English production “My Little Eye”, a suspense thriller starring mostly Canadian actors and set in an isolated locale somewhere in Canada, takes aim at the Reality TV show “Big Brother” (and to some extent, the MTV nonsense “Real World”). “Big Brother” was about a group of people who must live in a house, and the last person to leave the house wins a big cash price. As the name implies, omnipresent cameras capture everything the contestants [...]

The opening shots of Ginger Snaps — the identical lifeless homes of a planned community, where lots are still available for $125,000 each — says it all. The Fitzgerald sisters, Ginger and Brigitte, lives in this community, and both are outcasts by virtue of their personalities. They’re obsessed with death (as witnessed by their school project — a series of pictures of as many gruesome “death scenes” as they can stage) and are semi-Goths — they look the part, have the personality of the subculture, and are completely uninvolved with the real world. The girls have made a pact with each other: leave the planned community by age 16 or death by suicide (they are both 15 as the movie opens).
Of the two sisters, Ginger is the more “normal” of the two. Her looks are less freakish than Brigitte and although she acts out, you get the feeling she does it to keep Brigitte from feeling too alone. As [...]

“Cube” is a strange, but good, movie. It’s one of the more creative movies I’ve seen in a long time. The film is Canadian in origin, and was finished, I believed, with the help of money raised to help Canadian filmmakers. I’m sure there’s a name for this particular program, but it escapes me at the moment.
There is actually only one set for “Cube” — the cube-shaped prison cell of the title — which is redressed each time to give the impression of more than one cube connected to a multitude of others. The movie concentrates on character interactions and on the question of just how much creativity can the director throw at us without giving away that the film is a low-budget experience. Because of its limitations, the movie has very little plot, and what plot there is is paper thin at best, nonexistent at worst.
Characters, each with different talents, wake up to find themselves in the [...]
