So I was thinking to myself the other day, “Self, what’s up with the Captain America movie”? Luckily for me, Marvel head honcho Joe Quesada was at the Big Apple Comic-Con in New York City and said this about the Captain America script (officially “The First Avenger: Captain America”):
“I’ve seen a couple of outlines and an initial screenplay, and it’s going to rock everyone’s socks off. It’s very unexpected, the kind of movie it is.”
And according to Quesada, the Captain America movie will, indeed, set up “The Avengers” movie, which would seem to indicate ol Cap ends up “iced” by film’s end.
So now that we know the script is great and tastes like strawberries, what will the movie be about? Maybe something like this:
“Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because [...]

Ah, the Star-Spangled Banner Avenger. Finding an actor to play him is going to take some doing on Marvel Studios’ part. They’re either going to go with a well-known name to blunt the “America” part when they’re selling it overseas, or they’re going to go the completely unknown route as they recently did with “Thor”. Two names do keep coming up for the role, though: Mark Valley and John Barrowman (of Torchwood fame, in case you don’t know). What’s the word on both men and the role?
According to Barrowman, he still wants to do the role, but seems to concede that it’s never going to happen. During the Torchwood panel at Comic-Con over the weekend, Barrowman said this (via CBM):
“You know what I want to play? Captain America,” Barrowman proclaimed to the wildly receptive crowd, before adding that it “so won’t happen.”
He’s right. Marvel isn’t nearly socially forward-thinking enough, or politically-driven enough to cast an openly gay actor [...]

The boys over at FirstShowing recently sat on a conference in Cali that was attended by Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige, who gave the audience an update on a lot of the studio’s coming “Avengers”-related movies. You can read most of those updates here, but FirstShowing did manage to get more, including further confirmation that “The First Avenger: Captain America” will indeed be set primarily (maybe all of it, even) in World War II, and will feature an appearance by Cap’s sidekick, Bucky.
Feige confirmed that it’s “primarily” a period piece that takes place during WWII. He said they went and looked at Raiders of the Lost Ark, which he says he “didn’t know” was a period piece when he was watching it. They want to make Captain America with the “same level of fun” as that. And in regards to director Joe Johnston, he said that this would be a little bit of The Rocketeer, lots of October Sky, [...]

This morning there were about a half dozen different articles on the movie blogs focused on the same UGO article. Alas, that particular article has since been pulled. My guess is that UGO jumped the gun on the report, and Marvel has (probably not very) kindly asked them to take it down. It happens all the time in this universe we call the movie news trade. But luckily for us, they did publish the article, and a couple of other blogs were quick enough to pick up the contents before it was removed. This is the Internet, after all. Once it’s out, it’s out, boys.
Combined info from Slashfilm and Filmonic, both quoting Marvel’s headman himself, Kevin Feige:
“The Avengers”: Feige would like to see the Hulk show up, possibly as the movie’s central villain (or antagonist) that spurs the creation of the Avengers to face the threat. And since he signs the checks, I’m going to guess he’ll get his wish. [...]

Here are some very early looks at teaser posters for a slew of Marvel’s Avengers-related movies (”Thor”, “The Avengers”, “The First Avenger: Captain America”, and “Iron Man 2″), as well as an animated poster for Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” shown at this year’s Licensing Show in Las Vegas. No doubt these, especially the Marvel ones, aren’t anything you’ll see in the full-fledged posters, and if anything were probably thrown together just to promote the property at the event. Still, they kind of (though not in any real meaningful way) give you an idea of what Marvel is thinking when it comes to the properties.

In just a few short years, Channing Tatum has been in tons of big Hollywood movies, most of them as the leading man, but I swear I don’t know anyone who even knows who he is. That may actually work in his favor if he continues to promote himself as a viable candidate to play Captain America in “The First Avenger: Captain America” (seriously, they need to just call this thing either “Captain America” or “The First Avenger”, using both is just clunky).
Speaking to MTV, Channing talks about that stale rumor from ways back that had Will Smith as a contender for the role, but adds that he wouldn’t mind playing the role himself if it doesn’t work out for Smith.
“I would love to play Captain America,” Tatum explained in no uncertain terms. “I actually really, really would love it.”
“I love Captain America. I’m not a big aficionado on him,” he added. “But I know who we was, and I [...]

Well we sort of knew it had to happen. Let’s face it, Marvel’s initial idea of releasing both “Captain America” and “The Avengers” in the same year a few months part was way too optimistic. Today, the studio has revised their release schedule, and now instead of “The First Avenger: Captain America” and “The Avengers” hitting theaters in 2011 two months apart, Captain America will land first in 2011, while the Avengers will have to wait until 2012 to assemble.
In Thunder God news, “Thor” has also been delayed, moving from its original July 16, 2010 date to June 17, 2011. “Iron Man 2″, originally the companion superhero film for “Thor”, remains in its original May 7, 2010. I guess Marvel knows a hot item when they see it, and sees no reason to mess around with ol Shellhead’s dates. Now instead of “Iron Man 2″ and “Thor”, it’ll be “The First Avenger: Captain America” and “Thor” at the multiplexes in [...]

It looks like Marvel Studios is having something of a tiff with yet another one of their stars over moolah. This time it’s Samuel L. Jackson, who played Nick Fury at the end of “Iron Man”, and has been promised to the fanboys (much to their pants-pissing glee) as a major castmember in three upcoming Marvel movies: “Iron Man 2″, “The First Avenger: Captain America”, and of course, the biggest movie of 2011 without a doubt, “The Avengers”. So what’s the diddly yo on the man’s money? Apparently Marvel is tightening the purses. Either that, or they’re really, really bad at using the public as a negotiation tool. Jackson doesn’t seem to have that problem.
Says the baddest mofo of them all on the situation of his contract negotiation to the LA Times:

It looks like Marvel Studio’s “Captain America” has taken yet another steps towards production, with the announcement of two writers to join the project. The men enlisting to help ol Cap make it to the big screen are Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, whose previous credits include both “Chronicles of Narnia” movies, “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers”, and 2007’s wacky mob hitman comedy “You Kill Me”. For those concern that Marvel would be pulling some PC crap and turning Captain America into something he’s not, I wouldn’t fret; Marvel has made their intentions very clear that they plan to follow the path of the comic book character, and not turn Cap into a black guy played by Will Smith, or some other Hollywood bullshit.

Well here it is, kids, the first of what is sure to be many unofficial announcements regarding Marvel Studios’ upcoming mega slate of comic book movies: according to Entertainment Weekly, “Jurassic Park 3″ and “Hildalgo” director Joe Johnston has been given the job of bringing Steve Rogers and his alter ego, Captain America to the big screen in “The First Avenger: Captain America”, which would spin-off into the “Avengers” movie, set to be release a few months after “Captain America” in 2011. Johnston is definitely no stranger to big-budget, special effects heavy films, having done the aforementioned “Jurassic Park” sequel, as well as my personal favorite, “The Rocketeer”, and the upcoming “Wolf Man” with Benicio Del Toro.
The news from EW:
Marvel is making good on its promise to release The First Avenger: Captain America on May 6, 2011. The studio just signed director Joe Johnston (Hidalgo) to helm the project. Johnston, the director of Universal’s 2009 film The Wolfman, will [...]

So yup, forget all that garbage you heard about Will Smith playing Captain America in “The First Avenger: Captain America” that popped up online last month thanks to an actor (who shall be nameless) with an overactive imagination, because Marvel has made it official, or at least according to Production Weekly, who has put out a synopsis of what the film will be about, and where it will be set. Yes, Captain America is still a skinny white kid name Steve Rogers, and yes, it its main setting will still be World War II, and it will follow Rogers as he becomes Captain America, the scourge of the Nazis and Hollywood Liberals everywhere.
Here’s the official storyline (via):
“Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. [...]

Derek Luke is an actor who is “hearing” things that aren’t true. Either that, or he’s listening to fans of Will Smith who have never read the comic books, and couldn’t possibly “get” that yeah, even Hollywood wouldn’t dare turn Captain America, aka Steve Rogers, into a black guy and let Will Smith play him. Because, frankly, it worked so well when they let Smith played Jim West in the big-screen version of “The Wild Wild West”. Yes, that’s right, Hollywood, it makes perfect sense that a black guy is running around 19th century America, in the SOUTH, no less, and every law enforcement trusts him, including the President, because people back then were just sooooo open-minded. What bullshit.
So what’s this about Will Smith playing Captain America? Well, Derek Luke, while doing promo rounds for Spike Lee’s “The Miracle of St. Anna”, mentioned that someone had told him that Will Smith had been offered the role. He tells MTV:

So Comingsoon is currently floating this rumor that John Barrowman, star of the BBC’s Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, was just asked at Comic Con if it was true that he was currently up for the role in Marvel’s mega movie, “The First Avenger: Captain America”, playing, of course, Captain America. Barrowman (who is Scottish, but has a flawless American accent) said that Cap was one of his favorite comic book characters, and that he would love to play him. And in fact, he admitted that he had talked to his people about landing the role.
Here’s the article from Comingsoon:
John Barrowman, the star of “Torchwood,” was just asked moments ago at the San Diego Comic-Con panel if there was any possibility that he would be playing Captain America in the upcoming feature film.
He smiled and gave the stock answer that he’d love to play the character and that Captain America has always been his favorite comic book superhero. Clearly, though, [...]

To be honest with you, these “[Insert A-List Actor Name Here] to play [Insert Iconic Comic Book Character Here]” rumors get floated around the Internet more often than Paris Hilton drops to her knees during Fleet Week. Got a rumor you want to float? Just go ahead and do it, and credit it to an unnamed source in a movie studio somewhere. Shit, that’s what everyone else does, and I should probably start doing it, too. It’ll make me look important and crap without me having to actually do anything to be important like, you know, actually succeed in stuff. But I digress. The latest A-Lister rumored for an Iconic superhero role? Leonardo DiCaprio as Captain America.
Latino Review are the floaters this week. Here’s their reasoning (or lack thereof):
Well, speaking of CAPTAIN AMERICA, I have myself a trusted source internally over at Marvel and they are now starting to toss names for the role of Steve Rogers.
The name at the [...]

Is this possible? Could Marvel actually be giving us not one, but two amazing cameos in “The Incredible Hulk”? First Tony Stark makes an appearance, and now … Captain America in living person? Maybe, according to “Hulk” director Louis Leterrier (pictured, left), who drops the hint about 3 minutes into this 6 minute interview with G4’s Attack of the Show. Well, it’s not really a hint. He sort of comes right and tells us that Captain America may be making an appearance, in person, in “Hulk”.
Quoting Louis Leterrier:
Did you know that in “Iron Man” there’s the Captain America shield somewhere … well in “Hulk” you might see Captain America himself.
Whoa!
Also, Brownie props to Louis Leterrier for not rising to the host’s going-with-the-wind bashing of Ang Lee’s “Hulk”. Then later, when Louis Leterrier mentions that Captain America may be in the movie, the host responds with a, “Ah, very nice,” and moves right along without following up on it! Wow, way [...]

Speaking of Marvel… Apparently when Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, sent out invitations to online bloggers for a meet and greet, he forgot to send mine out. That’s okay, Kevin, next time, my man. In any case, Feige took questions and dished out answers about Marvel’s two high-profile movies coming up very soon — the Captain America movie and Thor. First up — No, says Feige, Matthew McConaughey is NOT in line to play Captain America as previously rumored. And the real biggie: Captain America will be set in World War II, and Thor will be set “mostly” in Asgard.
Sci Fi Wire has more “Thor” details and other Marvel news:
Feige also talked about the upcoming Thor movie, confirming that it will take place mostly in Asgard, the mythical Norse realm of the gods, and not in the contemporary real world. “The film is not all Asgard, but it will be a big chunk in Asgard, yeah,” Feige said.
Feige promised [...]

Before we get to the potentially ridiculous news of Matthew McConaughey even being considered to play the role of Captain America in Marvel’s upcoming “The First Avenger: Captain America”, let me just say this: if not for Marvel Studios, who are still not yet fully entrenched in the ways of Hollywood, I don’t think a Captain America movie would have been possible. Hollywood just doesn’t have the stomach to promote America in a good light, and let’s face it, a Captain America movie would do just that. So Thank God for Marvel, because even if the world can’t get behind a Captain America movie, Americans will still go see this thing in droves.
And now, on to the rumor that Matthew McConaughey is being eyed for Captain America via the boys over at Cinema Blend:
One of our long time scoopers dropped us a message tonight to let me know that Matthew McConaughey may be one of Marvel’s leading candidates to slip [...]

To no one’s surprise, “Iron Man” cleaned up at the box office with a worldwide take of $200 million in its first week of release. With that in mind, it’s then no surprise that Marvel has already announced that “Iron Man 2″ will be coming our way very soon — as in, in 2010. Which probably means Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. will be climbing back into the suit very soon to meet the deadline. The question is, who is the villain for the sequel, and will Terrence Howard finally get to suit up as War Machine?
What’s more, Marvel has also announced that the “Thor” movie will be showing up in theaters at the same time as “Iron Man 2″, while the “Avengers” movie (with Favreau directing, one can only hope) will be popping up as early as 2011 — right after a “Captain America” movie?

Let’s face it: Captain America gets no respect. Kids too “cool” for school shun his patriotic slant, and the comics killed the poor sap. (Well, as much as “killed” as you can get in a comic book, anyways.) So how could a Captain America movie even be possible in today’s Hollywood? A place where every other movie that gets made is designed to mock all notions of patriotism and to shamelessly bash the country for a shot at Oscar glory? Who knows, but maybe Nick Cassavetes has something to say about that. According to the guys over at CHUD, there are rumblings (that is to say, there are some wild rumors and off-the-cuff talk) that Cassavetes is going to be bringing the shield slinger to the big screen soon. Maybe. Probably not. Eh, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Here’s CHUD:

Finally, some update on the upcoming “Captain America” movie. On the set of “Iron Man”, Marvel Studios’ President of Production Kevin Feige told the gathered throngs of press about Marvel’s massive slate of current and upcoming comic book properties-turned-movies. Most interesting to us is the update on “Captain America”, which Feige says, “We’ll have to play with Captain America as being a patriotic propoganda machine on one hand but also being a very human Steve Rogers, … [an] interesting, fascinating hero in his own right.”
Feige goes on:
Is the script they’re developing a period piece? “Right now what we’re developing would be about half and half,” Feige said.
Feige said that Captain America will aim for a PG-13 rating, like Iron Man. The comic studio has brought on writer David Self (Road to Perdition) to draft a screenplay. A director will be announced soon, Feige said. Production is expected to begin in a year.
Self is a good writer, and I’m dying [...]
