Nicolas Cage does, on average, 4 movies a year, and he’s usually got 4 more in the pipeline. You can usually count on 3 of the 4 ranging in quality from Godawful to “meh”, with one being slightly less awful; and in some cases, that one movie might even good. As it turns out, there’s a reason Nicolas Cage spends so much time on movie sets, and no, it’s not because hanging out with dirty hippies turned lowly grips is fun, though I suppose that’s a possibility as well. It could very well be that our main Nic Cage has something of a spending problem, and the pay, even for a crappy film, is too good to pass up. After all, those shrunken heads collection don’t collect themselves, you know.
The Daily Beast has a great article detailing Nic Cage’s spending spree over the years and his current financial situation. In a word: he’s broke. After reading the article, you don’t [...]

I will admit to being a fan of Troy Duffy’s 1999 movie “Boondock Saints” (made for $6 million, the film has gone on to gross over $40 million so far), and yes, I’m even looking forward to the sequel, “Boondock Saints: All Saints Day”. This, despite the fact that I think the original “Saints” was way too much of a John Woo copycat; but honestly, back in the day, everyone was copying John Woo, so it’s hard to fault Duffy too much. Though curiously, the film is compared more to Tarantino’s movies, as if Tarantino would ever make the effort to do the elaborate action set pieces that Duffy pulls in his first “Saints” movie. Also, I suspect, the Tarantino comparisons are the result of Duffy becoming involved with the Weinstein boys, who are notorious Tarantino sycophants.
For those who have followed his career, Duffy’s life before, during, and after “Boondock Saints” is almost as entertaining, if not more so, than [...]

I admit that I do like a good public disclosure. It’s cathartic, in a way; perhaps not for the stars, but for my perceptions of them. I don’t know if there’s any backlash for it. We’re in the unique age where millions can learn what you say privately. Everything said within enclosed walls might as well be a public announcement on television.
Bronson Pinchot, best known for his role as Balki Bartokomous on the ABC sitcom Perfect Strangers, held a long delineation about many of his past experiences with the AV Club. He had very kind things to say about people who he had worked with or known, such as Martin Scorsese and Tom Hanks, but then he excoriated Tom Cruise:
We didn’t know it was going to be a big hit. We thought Tom [Cruise] was the biggest bore on the face of the Earth. He had spent some formative time with Sean Penn—we were all very young at the time, [...]

You know the best part about Megan Fox? She’s 23 years old and she hasn’t learned the concept of filters or even what “burning bridges” mean just yet. It’s not her fault, really; the girl is, after all, only 23, and you gotta figure she’s never been told to “shut it” in her life because of her looks. Which probably resulted in her calling Michael Bay Hitler, then getting slapped around by the crew for her comments, before jumping back onboard to work with Bay on “Transformers 3″. The latest Fox-capade has the actress doing the demure thing on Spike TV’s recent awards show thingie that no one saw because, let’s face it, no one needs another damn awards show that doesn’t mean squat.
Fox showed off the new and not-improved Megan Fox at Spike TV’s 4th annual Scream Awards. Yes, this thing has been going for four years now, and you still don’t know about it, do you? Shame on [...]

Oscar winner or not, Roger Avary is about to do a full year in prison, with a 5-year probation period after pleading guilty to manslaughter charges back in August. The entire ordeal stems from a drunk-driving incident where Avary, liquored out of his mind, wrapped his Mercedes around a telephone pole while going 100 miles per hour. The accident killed his passenger and friend Andreas Zini and badly injured his wife, who was thrown from the car on impact.
Besides jail time, Avary has settled a $4.1 million dollar civil lawsuit with Zini’s family. Zini was killed while on his honeymoon and visiting Avary. Luckily for one half of the honeymooning couple, Zini’s wife was in another car when the accident took place in the city of Ojai, 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
If the name Roger Avary doesn’t ring any bells, he was a co-writer on Quentin Tarantino’s Award-winning “Pulp Fiction”, the movie that took “Two Guys in a Room” [...]

“Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired” is a film that methodically documents the director’s famous trial nearly thirty years later and the way in which it transformed into a scene out of one of his movies: the judge directing his own self-made script, the principle players standing in as the actors, the press attempting to cultivate the most prurient storyline, and the theme of an out of control trial corrupting all those involved. Just by virtue of its nature, the documentary involuntarily casts Polanski in a sympathetic light, revealing the divide between the distance and intimacy with which the Americans and Europeans respectively viewed him, but there is even more sympathy for justice, which had been trumped by the judge’s own personal pride, and the victim, who had to endure a trial she didn’t deserve.
In a recent interview for a Movie Geeks United podcast, which was taped hours before Polanski’s arrest in Zurich and will be available for download on October [...]

You might not know it by looking at him, but beneath Andy Richter’s suave exterior is concealed an intellectual, erudite mind worth $68,000. This is the mind of a man who beat Smartest Person in the World Wolf Blitzer (SPitWWB) and an impressive showing by Desperate Housewives star Dana Delany in front of a national audience on Celebrity Jeopardy. Sure, the questions were softballs, but Andy Richter trumped SPitWWB on geography, history, and literature. God bless Wolf, he works with what he has. At one point he was at -$4,600 before they politely put him back in the green so that he could participate in final Jeopardy.
The Tonight Show chronicled Andy’s exploits behind the scenes in practice. The aired episode can be seen below.

I was incredibly saddened to learn this week that Henry Gibson, “Laugh-In” favorite and an extremely versatile character actor, passed away on Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 73. Gibson, who I became very familiar with thanks to Nick-At-Nite and Joe Dante’s classic horror/comedy “The Burbs,” was a comedian whose ability greatly appealed to me, though I still cannot put my finger on why. In addition to brief yet memorable roles in such films as “Wedding Crashers,” “Magnolia,” and “Innerspace,” Gibson also appeared in a string of cult favorites, including “Monster in the Closet,” “Bio-Dome,” and the grossly underrated “Gremlins 2: The New Batch.” He was also the voice of Wilbur in “Charlotte’s Web,” a film that never fails to make me weepy. I wish I was kidding, folks. We’re talking Niagara Falls, each and every time I watch it.

Because Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson (who has appeared on such shows as “The Colbert Report” and “NOVA Science Now”), like the man who asks the genie for an ice cream sundae, would waste not just one, but two chances with James Cameron by asking about the misaligned sky effects in “Titanic”. Now you can see what meaningless obsessions perplex astrophysicists on their time off. He speaks in reverential detail as if it’s his duty to tell Cameron, who is no doubt busy on his own irrelevant quest to find the missing tomb of Jesus, what’s on his mind. I also enjoyed his answer about how the asteroids in “Armaggedon” seem magnetically compelled by the most interesting manmade structures in the world.
In true internet fashion, the video is from May 7th and is just now permutating across movie blogs, but I thought that it was interesting nonetheless and worth a watch.

Apparently being really, really hot doesn’t mean you can do and say anything you want without consequence. Go figure. Not all that long ago, Megan Fox recently wished all of Middle America was murdered because they don’t hold the same views as she does on gay marriage; then the lovely “Transformers” star began a series of scorched Earth interviews where she laid into the “Transformers” movies and Michael Bay. EW chronicles the whole thing here.
So, what’s the latest word on our favorite mouthy hottie? Someone in Megan Fox’s camp has issued this statement and attributed it to her. Obviously, she didn’t write it herself, and I’m inclined to believe she didn’t even read it.
“I have spoken with the parties involved privately,” Fox said in a statement, via her publicist. “I am very fortunate to be involved in this amazing franchise and look forward to Transformers 3.”

Celebrity tabloid stuff like that bores me, and I never want to be one of those people who feed those hovering vultures that survive on exposing celebrity dirt. But I did know that Swayze had been sick for quite some time, and that it has hampered his ability to appear in movies and on TV. Which brings us to this sad news: Patrick Swayze has lost his two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, and has passed away at the age of 57.
Patrick Swayze is survived by his wife Lisa Niemi, brother Don, and and his mother.

By now you may or may not have heard: Megan Fox is really hot and really mouthy. The target of Megan Fox’s mouthiness has been, of late, her former “Transformers” director Michael Bay, who Fox has likened to a socially retarded Hitler. Apparently not everyone is happy with that comparison. A trio of former Bay crewmembers have risen to defend their dear leader, posting a rather defamatory (and long) letter on Michael Bay’s website in response to Fox’s comments. While the letter itself has since been removed, this is the Internet, so of course there are copies for all to read.
DHD has the entire letter over at their site, but here are the highlights:
And who is the real Megan Fox? She is very different than the academy nominee and winning actors we’ve all worked around. She’s as about ungracious a person as you can ever fathom. She shows little interest in the crew members around her. We work to [...]

Take for instance this growing rift between Fox and Michael Bay, a rift that Michael Bay seems to be taking much more serious than Ms. Fox.
In a recent interview with Wonderland Magazine (on newsstands now, I’m told), Fox added to the Bay-bashing in response to the question, “What’s it like working with Michael Bay?”

Sad news from the world of Hollywood, with news that director John Hughes, most famous for his High School-set teen dramedys of the 1980s like “Breakfast Club”, “Sweet Sixteen”, and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, has died of a heart attack while taking a morning walk in Manhattan. The writer/director was 59 years old.
The films of John Hughes were a bit ahead of my time when they first came out, but like most teens back in the day, I eventually caught up and loved them. Even if you saw them now, I don’t think you could say they didn’t reflect the life of a high school teen (in particular, the awkward life of a high school geek). Sure, the hair styles may change, the cliques may have different names, but high school is still high school, back then and today.
If you’ve never seen his films, I do recommend that you give them a try. You won’t be disappointed.
Rest in peace, John [...]

Now this is funny. To be perfectly honest with you, I’m not the biggest fan of Seth Rogen. Okay, I kind of think he’s overrated and giving him The Green Hornet to star, produce, and write strikes me as overly, well, dumb. But I gotta admit, after this appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel show (people still watch this show?), I think I now like Seth Rogen just a little bit more than I previously did. Mind you, I still think giving the guy an entire franchise to do with as he wishes is a bad, bad, BAD idea, but hey, at least he’s willing to take some shots at himself, and that’s always fun when celebrities do that on national TV when all they really came out to do is promote their movies, TV show, or their latest appearance at some geek con somewhere.
Here’s Rogen on the Jimmy Kimmel show, talking about a time two years ago when he first [...]

Celebrities are silly. They make millions of dollars for a couple months work pretending in front of a camera while eating expensive catered food and getting rubdown massages in their trailers until they’re needed, but they still insist you love them and love everything they do. Whatever. Anyways, Samuel L. Jackson is now the latest celeb to get his panties into a bunch about Internet critics who trash him and his movies. Personally, we like Sam Jackson, and when he’s in a movie we don’t care for, we just avoid watching and reporting on it. I don’t think I’ve ever said one bad thing about Sam the Man, but just in case I ever do, Sam would like to give me his number so we can arrange a time and he can set me straight.
Jackson tells WENN:
“All these people can sit at home and can blog. They can say bad things about you online and you don’t know who they [...]

For those of you who care about such things, Forbes.com ranks Angelina Jolie as the reigning female high earner in Hollywood from June 2008 and June 2009, thanks to her profit participation from the comic book movie “Wanted” and a nice paycheck for her spy thriller “Salt”. Jolie’s $27 million was just enough to beat out Jennifer Aniston’s $25 million, from the movie “Marley and Me” and her never-gonna-end checks from the TV show Friends. Obviously seeing Aniston come second on a list to Jolie isn’t new to anyone, much less Aniston, who is pretty much used to losing out to Jolie. You gotta figure the poor girl wakes up and goes to sleep cursing the name Angelina Jolie.
Meryl Streep, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Cameron Diaz rounded out the Top 5 female earners in Hollywood for 2008. Streep’s money came from “Mamma Mia!”, while Parker continues to live off her “Sex and the City” days, and Cameron Diaz took [...]

File this one under the category of, “I’ll believe it when I see it with my own eyes.” According to the site WENN (via IMDB.com), explosions master Michael Bay, who once touted his need for awesome explosions in his everyday life in a Verizon commercial, has grown tired of movies filled with explosions and giant battling robots ala the “Transformers” franchise. The impetus for this change of heart? Apparently The Bay is tired of critics skewering him for the lack of substance and over reliance on explosions in his films.
Says The Bay:
“It’s easy to go shoot an art movie in a winery in the South of France. But people have no idea how hard it is to create something like Transformers. They (the critics) review me before they’ve even seen the movie.”
He goes on:
“After the three and a half years I’ve spent making these movies, I feel like I’ve had enough of the Transformers world. I need to do [...]

David Fincher apparently really, really loves his Mac products, enough that he was willing to direct a 30-second spot for Apple to promote their upcoming iPhone 3GS, available to retailers mid-June. The “s” stands for “speed”, in case you were wondering. The iPhone 3GS is supposed to be faster on every level, including application launching, and will come with video capabilities, something it wasn’t capable of in previous versions. Check out Fincher’s two commercials, the first one is titled, “Break In”, and the second one, according to this blog, features narration by Robert Downey Jr. Not sure why they didn’t let RDJ do both, though.
Via Apple.com.
First Commercial: “Break In”

Second Commercial: with RDJ
