“Chocolate” is a film which has been causing considerable excitement amongst martial arts fans, unsurprisingly given that it is Thai director Prachya Pinkaew’s follow up to his worldwide hits “Ong Bak” and “Warrior King”. Having made a star of Tony Jaa, he here aims to do the same for female Muay Thai fighting sensation JeeJa Yanin, casting her in a similar role which basically sees her as an innocent taking on hordes of faceless opponents in a showcase for her skills. The film is being released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK via Showbox’s Cine Asia label, and comes with a variety of special features, including several featurettes on the cast, the making of and the martial arts choreography, as well as the usual deleted scenes.
The plot, such as it is, follows JeeJa Yanin as a young autistic girl called Zen, who has learned martial arts by watching the films of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and, funnily enough, [...]

You gotta wonder how much cooler Prachya Pinkaew’s “Chocolate” would have been if Tony Jaa had played the main character, an autistic girl who learns martial arts through martial arts flicks and by watching the dojo next door. That, and eating chocolate. Instead, Pinkaew has casted newcomer name Jeeja Vismistananda. Obviously they would have to change the gender of the main character, as although I can buy Jaa as pretty much anything as long as he’s kicking people out of windows and then flying after them to deliver a knee strike to the chest while they’re still falling, he probably wouldn’t quite work as an autistic girl. Then again, I suppose the whole point of “Chocolate” is to see a tiny little Thai girl running around kicking the asses of grown men playing gangsters.
Your good news comes from THR:
Magnolia Pictures’ genre arm Magnet will release “Chocolate,” the story of an autistic girl (newcomer Jeeja Vismistananda) who learns martial arts [...]

So yesterday when doing a preview of Prachya Pinkaew’s new Thai martial arts actioner “Chocolate” I was lamenting that there wasn’t a trailer anywhere. Ask and ye shall receive! I just stumbled across the trailer over at Imprint, and despite the title of the movie, “Chocolate” looks very much like a bone-breaking combat film in the vein of “Ong Bak” and “Tom Yum Goong”. Except, er, with a girl instead of a skinny Thai guy.
‘Chocolate’ stars newcomer Nicharee “Jeeja” Vismistananda as an autistic girl who learns how to fight both by absorbing her martial arts skills from what she sees on TV and from the Muay thai boxing school next to her home. When she finds a list of debtors in her sick mother’s diary, she decides to go collecting. Her quest leads her to confrontations with criminal gangs and also her father, a member of the Japanese mafia.
Get kickin’ February 2008.

If you don’t instantly recognize the name Prachya Pinkaew, maybe the name Tony Jaa will help. Prachya Pinkaew was the director on Jaa’s two breakthrough films, “Ong Bak” and “Tom Yum Goong” (known in the U.S. as “Ong Bak Warrior” and “The Protector”, respectively). Prachya Pinkaew’s latest is the oddly titled “Chocolate”, but don’t let the name fool you, it’s all about an ass-kicking female fighter.
The film’s premise is pretty “out there”, and the boys over at 24Framespersecond have more:
