Boy, was I being optimistic when I put 2009 as a possible release date for “Cloverfield 2″ way back in the day. You know, last year. As it turns out, it might be 2010 when we finally see anything moving on the “Cloverfield” sequel front, although if producer J.J. Abrams gets his way, they might be moving on this thing sooner rather than later.
Via Comingsoon, Abrams said this during the Star Trek panel at Wondercon over the weekend:
“We’re actually working on an idea right now… The key obviously at doing any kind of sequel, certainly this film included, is that it better not be a business decision. If you’re going to do something, it should be because you’re really inspired to do it. It doesn’t really have to mean anything, doesn’t mean it will work, but it means we did it because we cared, not because we thought we could get the bucks. We have an idea that we thought [...]

Okay, so this is waaaaaaaaaay early. As in, “Oh man, that’s pretty early!” Which is to say, these are waaaaaaaaaaaay too early to be have any actual truth to the notion that they’re part of “Cloverfield 2″, which J.J. Abrams has all but confirmed is coming sometime down the pipe. Sometime. Which means not now, especially with “Cloverfield” director Matt Reeves already at work on his “Invisible Woman” movie, meaning “Cloverfield 2″ has been put on the back burner.
But hey, I’m not one to shoot down an interesting news item, even if it turns out to be premature. This one comes from Bloody-Disgusting, who tells us this:
Blogsite Tagruato found some clues on Paramount Home Entertainment’s CLOVERFIELD DVD, which led them to the following website:
http://www.usgx8810b467233px.com/access.htm
At the said website, three images were discovered, two of the parasite creatures underwater and one of a secret document.
Here’s one of the pics (see the rest of it over at B-D):

We know it’s coming, mostly because the original made so much money ($160-plus worldwide and counting), and in Hollywood, money talks and you know what walks — and doesn’t get a sequel. But can a sequel possibly top the first? Probably not, but that’s not going to stop J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company from unleashing “Cloverfield 2″ onto the now-suspecting populace, and recently Abrams talked a bit about the upcoming sequel.
Word from the big kahuna himself is that the original duo behind the first “Cloverfield”, Drew Goddard (writer) and Matt Reeves (director) have ideas for a sequel, which, according to Abrams, may be shot in the same style as the first ala as seen through a handheld camera.
This would seem to jive with earlier reports that had Reeves indicating that a possible sequel would be based on the same events as the first, only seen from another perspective — i.e. someone else’s camcorder. One would hope the [...]

Not being total idiots (despite evidence to the contrary, sometimes), the suits over at Paramount have decided that Yes, they want a sequel to the monster hit “Cloverfield”, and Variety reports that they’re currently in negotiations with the film’s director, Matt Reeves, to do another one as soon as possible. This is good news for Reeves, who is suddenly on the hot list, with the “Cloverfield” sequel on the horizon and a deal to direct “The Invisible Woman” already done.
More:
Timing of the projects will depend on how quickly Paramount can complete discussions with Reeves, producer J.J. Abrams and scribe Drew Goddard to scare up another monster tale for the “Cloverfield” sequel. There’s a good chance the sequel will be Reeves’ next film, in which case he will direct “The Invisible Woman” afterward.
“Woman” is a Hitchcock-style thriller that probes the mind of a former beauty queen who turns to a life of crime to protect her family.
Reeves wrote the script and [...]

This is Hollywood, and when a movie opens north of $40 million in Hollywood (as “Cloverfield” just did over the weekend), a sequel is not far behind. And now the film’s director, Matt Reeves, is talking about a possible sequel, and he already has an idea what it could be about.
Says Reeves (via):
“There’s a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that’s been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy’s briefly filming him.”
“In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another.”
