“Cloverfield” and its two promised alternate endings don’t hit DVD until April 22, 2008, but someone’s already gotten their hands on those alternate endings and put them up on YouTube (head on below to see them now). You know, I don’t know where that monster came from, but I’ll be damn if it’s still alive after the pounding the military gave it in the movie. I mean, seriously, that thing doesn’t look like it’s strong enough to withstand high tide, and it’s taking a massive, day-long aerial bombardment and is still standing? It better end up being some super alien exo-skeleton or something, because otherwise it’s just downright silly it can withstand that much punishment and still keep wreaking havoc. Anyways, check out the two alternate endings to “Cloverfield” below.
Buy the film when it hits DVD April 22, 2008.

Still haven’t seen “Cloverfield” yet? Still wondering what the monster in the movie looks like? Okay, so you maybe you’re not wondering that last part so much, since I already showed you what the monster looks like (see it in all its ugly glory here if you’re still clueless). Now the studio has released a minute long clip from the movie that shows parts of the monster as it goes through New York, soldiers shooting at it, and the idiot with the camcorder shouting “Oh my God” so much I wanted to reach into the screen and slap him.
Cloverfield follows five New Yorkers from the perspective of hand held video camera. The movie is exactly the length of a DV Tape and a sub-plot is established by showing bits and pieces of video previously recorded on the tape that is being recorded over. The movie starts as a monster of unknown origin destroys a building. As they go to [...]

Well, you’re mostly right, but there are questions that still looms, such as: Where did the monster come from? Did it come from outer space? And just why is it so gosh-darn pissed off at New York City? Well Matt Reeves, in an interview with Den of Geek, has your answers.
In short, Reeves says that the monster in “Cloverfield” was a baby monster, and it just woke up!
So the secret that we had was that the monster was a baby. Having just been born it was going through separation anxiety and had no idea where its mother was and was freaking out and was in a completely foreign place, didn’t understand a thing and that that would be sending it into a kind of infantile rage. Which was very frightening, but the thing that was also frightening to me was the idea that not only was it [...]

Bazookas couldn’t stop it. Military helicopter rockets couldn’t slow it down. And neither can the box office, because J.J. Abrams’ much-hyped “Cloverfield” showed that viral marketing still works by chomping down on an impressive $41 million take in its opening weekend debut, the biggest January opening ever, topping the $35.9 by the “Star Wars” re-release in 1997.
But if you weren’t buying popcorn for “Cloverfield”, you were probably doing it for Katherine Heigl’s romantic comedy “27 Dresses”, which did surprisingly well by opening at #2 with $22.4 million, thus cementing the Grey’s Anatomy actress as a bona fide movie star.
“Mad Money”, on the other hand, opened at #7 with $7.7 million. I guess comedy crime capers aren’t anyone’s cup of tea.
Here’s how the Top 10 looked (via):
1. “Cloverfield,” $41 million.
2. “27 Dresses,” $22.4 million.
3. “The Bucket List,” $15.2 million.
4. “Juno,” $10.3 million.
5. “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” $8.1 million.
6. “First Sunday,” $7.8 million.

Shrouded in secrecy and a pervasive viral marketing campaign, prolific television producer J.J. Abrams’ (‘Alias,’ ‘Lost’) latest film, “Cloverfield,” lands in US theaters at a rather curious time. Mid-January is typically when movie studios flush the crap out of their dumpsters and into the cineplexes, so I was surprised that a film with an A-List pedigree would be released now. I suppose the producers were banking on effective buzz allowing them to get the drop on a soft box office. From the looks of it, the gamble will pay off. The word-of-mouth buzz I had heard prior to seeing the film indicated that it was “Godzilla” meets “The Blair Witch Project” and the stern warning about the potential induction of motion sickness posted at the theater ticket counter reinforced that assessment. After seeing the film, I can say that it does play out pretty much as advertised, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

It’s going to be a while before I see Abrams’ “Cloverfield” (a combination of being sick like a dog for most of this week and hating crowds), but a lot of people have. Here are some reviews for “Cloverfield” by the critics, and you can add your own to the list in the comments section. The general critics score seems to be a solid B.
James Berardinelli gave the movie 3 (out of 4) stars:
The movie is interesting because it’s so damn different. It takes a worn concept and invigorates it by applying an innovative approach. The style will anger and offend some viewers but, if you’re able to accommodate the camera, the movie delivers. There are moments of high tension and the sense of danger feels closer and more real than in any recent motion picture. The missteps – the greatest of which is the interminable introduction – are forgivable because the payoff is strong.
Roger Ebert also gave it 3 [...]

Okay, here are some excerpts from UGO’s review:
Q: What the hell does the monster look like? Is it a whale with feet?
A: It is not a whale with feet. But it is difficult to describe. I haven’t seen a monster quite like this before. That doesn’t mean that you don’t get a good look at him. You do. But even still. He kinda looks like a giant gray dinosaur with creepy backwards ostrich legs. But that’s not the scariest part. [...]

I’m marking this post with the big SPOILER tag, because it seems to be very spoilerific when it comes to knowing more about J.J. Abrams’ upcoming monster movie “Cloverfield” (opening barely two weeks from now, which explains the sudden flood of “Cloverfield” images and “leaks”), so if you don’t want to know anything more about the movie, I suggest you not continue reading.
As if you haven’t gotten your fill of the monster movie that is “Cloverfield” just yet, here are some more tidbits courtesy of Variety. According to an interview with the film’s director Matt Reeves, the movie’s title was always going to be “Cloverfield”, and you’ll get to see a lot of the monster, including what Reeves is calling “intimate contact” with the monster by the end of the film.
Here are the excerpts about the movie (read the rest of the article here):
“Cloverfield” — the government’s code name for a “case incident” involving footage recovered from a site “formerly known as Central Park” — was designed as a handheld digital mock-doc. The initial scenes set up the premise: The camera’s hunky owner Rob is in love with a beauty named Beth. He doesn’t want to shoot a testimonial video at his brother’s going-away party, so he passes the camera to a guy named Hud, who keeps shooting through the long night [...]

It doesn’t open until January 18, 2008, but the TV commercials for the Abrams-produced “Cloverfield” are all over the airwave, and there are tons of them. I’m way too lazy to search for them all, but fortunately the guys over at UGO weren’t, and they’ve posted all the 30-second trailers online. Head on below to see them now.

The J.J. Abrams-produced “Cloverfield” is all over the TV nowadays. I can’t turn the channel without seeing a commercial for this thing. So after hearing about this Russian trailer, I wasn’t convinced that it could or would contain any new footage. But lo and behold, it actually does.
Much of the new footage is featured in the second half of the trailer, around the halfway point. It also shows a lot of the soldiers shooting back at the monster, and more of the civilians hiding and fleeing. It still doesn’t show a whole lot of the monster or its little monster babies (I guess that’s what you’d call them), but give it a try anyway.
“Cloverfield” opens January 18, 2008.

J.J. Abrams and company have come up with a neato little idea to generate even more viral enthusiasm for their upcoming movie “Cloverfield” — make a widget for people to put on their site, slap 5 minutes worth of footage from the beginning of the film on it, and then make the whole shebang around a contest where the site that introduces the video to more people gets a prize. Oh, Abrams, you smarty pants you.
So watch the video below and grab the widget and then slap it onto your blog or site or whatever it is you have. Or just watch the 5-minute video and do nothing like you always do. See if I care.
“Cloverfield” opens January 18th, 2008.

So in case you missed it, J.J. Abrams’ Cloverfield movie, aka 01-18-08, has officially been titled, and it’s … Cloverfield. That’s right. The “code name” is actually the movie’s real title. Or maybe Abrams just realized that so many people know the film as Cloverfield that it’s kind of dumb to call it something else at this very late date. Name recognition and all that stuff. Anyhoo, besides the official title, there’s also a new poster (thumbnail to your left, bigger version below). Well it’s not really new new, but there’s that text thing, which I guess sort of makes it new. Kinda.

Those entrepreneuring guys over at Slash Film have managed to capture the Cloverfield monster on video via the second trailer. The beast only shows up for a brief time in the recently released Cloverfield trailer, but Slash has isolated the appearance of the brute responsible for wreaking havoc upon New York. (Head on below to see the video evidence if you can’t wait.) It’s not the entire view of the monster, and it’s actually only a side view of the gargantuan beast as it’s walking past two buildings, but if you ever wondered what the thing looked like, or just get a “feel” for it, here it is. It’s not Godzilla, it’s not a T-Rex, it’s — something really big and fleshy. Ewww.
