David Fincher has several films on his docket at the moment, but one of his more anticipated projects is The Goon, which is based on a comic book about a brawler who works for the enforcer Labrazio…and battles hordes of evil zombies in the process. Comic books always have some strange twist to the concept. Comic Book Resources talked to the original author of The Goon, Eric Powell, about the upcoming issues and the plans for the CG animated film version:
“I just finished writing the script a few months back, and Blur is working on a lot of test stuff. Fincher is working on a film right now, so we’re waiting for him to get some space so we can start showing some of this stuff off. I’m pretty happy with everything so far. We’ve just got to work to get to the next point. This is a slow, long process.
That David Fincher film is, of course, The Social Network, [...]

Karl Urban would like you to know that there are no sparkling vampires in his new movie “Priest”, based on the comic book from Tokyo! Pop. In a recent interview, Urban promises that Scott Stewart’s “Priest”, set in a post-apocalyptic world where survivors have fought a war between vampires and humans for generations, will feature some “dark moments” and hard-core action. Or as the actor, who plays the vampire villain Black Hat in the movie puts it, “one-third of the movie is action-based stuff.” So, no dreamy vampires sitting next to you in biology class, then?
Sounds great, right? Yes, but then Karl goes and makes an absurd statement:
“He shot this scene on the old Warner Brothers lot where they shot Blade Runner, and he really out-Ridleyed Ridley. It looked amazing. Crowd scenes, people speaking different languages: It was literally just jumping off of the screen. Literally, the [assistant director] said, ‘Look, if you can speak a foreign language, please, we [...]

I don’t know if Felicia Hardy is going to be a villain in Spider-Man 4, but the rumors for a female part are so ubiqitous, Rachel McAdams and Julia Stiles having been rumored in as many days, that there must be some large role that necessitates the inclusion of a well-known actress. The rumors give off a lot of heat, but so far there has been no real light shed on the part. Now Deadline Hollywood is reporting that producers have approached Ann Hathaway for a starring role in the film. Since Kirsten Dunst is returning as Mary Jane Watson, the Black Cat seems to be the most obvious fit, given the prevalence of rumors.
Anne Hathaway is a quality actor and would be a real boon to the film, having been nominated for a best acting Academy Award, even though a lot of her best parts involve trying to define the role of a woman in contemporary society. One of [...]

Remember that announced movie based on the comic book called “Caliber”, that re-imagined King Arthur and his knights as gunfighters instead of, well, knights? Word was, John Woo was coming onboard to direct the film, but that was over a year ago. According to Woo, who is currently in the States promoting his “Red Cliff” martial arts epic, the time was never right for him to direct the movie, and from the sounds of it, it doesn’t look like he’ll be going anywhere near anything that can be called a “superhero movie” in the future.
Curiously, Woo cites his aversion to superhero movies being their general lack of believability, that he prefers to do movies that are more “realistic”. Which begs the question: how realistic were any of John’s Hong Kong movies? You had one guy with two guns running around shooting about 200 bad guys in one locale. Yeah, John, that’s real “realistic”. I’m just sayin’. Loved the hell out [...]

I’ve read a lot of Warren Ellis’ comic book work, but I’ve never read his “Global Frequency”. Initially I thought this was the comic series “Planetary”, but apparently they are two separate works. In “Frequency”, a woman name Miranda Zero leads a covert unit made up of exactly 1,001 operatives around the world, and their mission is to stop world-threatening situations before the public knows about it. Ellis apparently fashioned the series as a series of single, stand-alone issues, much like a TV show. Warner Bros. tried to adapt the comic into a TV series back in 2005, when the channel was still called WB. Fast-forward to 2009, and the WB is now the CW, and they’re once again looking at a “Global Frequency” series.
MTV reports that Warren Ellis has all but confirmed the second attempt at a “Global Frequency” TV series, posting:

With Rachel McAdams having already denied rumors that she was talking to producers of “Spider-Man 4″ to play Felicia Hardy aka The Black Cat in Sam Raimi’s latest Spidey film, the question remains: is the Black Cat really going to be in the movie, and if so, who will play her? According to the blokes at UGO, “Bourne” actress Julia Stiles is now “talking” with producers about the role. UGO doesn’t really say who they learned this little news from, just that they “have learned”, which, er, could be totally bullshit, and probably is.
So would Julia Stiles fit the role of the Black Cat? Eh, I don’t know. Stiles’ biggest role to date was that dancing movie “Save the Last Dance”. She’s been in a ton of movies, usually playing teenagers or 20-something characters, and has never really gotten her due, mostly because, well, though she’s a decent enough actress, she’s never really wowed anyone. That, and no one ever sends me anything worth breaking. Ahem. Anyways, remember that news that had Rachel McAdams meeting with the Spidey producers for the role of the Black Cat in “Spider-Man 4″? Apparently all untrue.
McAdams tells EW:
“That’s a total rumor, I have to say. I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.‘ And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true.”
EW then reached out to Sony, who confirms the totally made up Internet rumor.
Oh well. McAdams as the Black Cat would have been an odd choice anyway (like I said, she just doesn’t seem the “type” for such a role), but [...]

I don’t read nearly enough “Thor” comic books to know who these Warriors Three guys are, or if they’re all that important to the large scope of a Thor movie, but the trades apparently think they’re big enough of a deal to report on their casting. And so, here is the casting news: Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano have been cast to play the Warrior’s Three, described as “a trio of Asgardian adventurers” named Fandral, Hogun and Volstagg who make it their business to fight alongside the movie’s hero, Asgard hero Thor.
That’s a pretty interesting selection of actors there. Ray Stevenson is no stranger to Marvel Comics, having recently played The Punisher in the poorly received (though I loved it) “Punisher: War Zone”. He’ll next be seen in the Denzel Washington post-apocalyptic actioner “Book of Eli”.
Stuart Townsend boasts plenty of genre credits himself, including the recent remake of “Night Stalker” on TV.

Or when your best bud became the second Green Goblin and started trying to slice you in half while riding, of all things, a jet-powered skateboard? Or maybe it was coming home to Mary Jane and there she is, with her sourpuss face, demanding YOU make her dinner THIS time. Whatever happened, I hope you get over it, buddy, there are crimes to be fought. Those muggings don’t stop themselves, you know.

Based on the Warren Ellis comic book mini-series, “Red” stars Bruce Willis is an ex-CIA agent who has retired to green pastures, when young high-tech assassins come after him. It’s a nifty idea for a movie, and one that Willis should be able to play in his sleep. It is, after all, just another variation on Willis’ most famous character, tough New York cop John Mclane. Besides Willis, the cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly, and Mary Louise Parker as his love interest. Now you can add four more names to that list.
Joining “Red’s” ballooning cast will be “Nip/Tuck’s” Julian McMahon, playing the movie’s Vice President of the United States, a character that is said to be at the center of the conspiracy that Willis’ retired CIA agent must expose. In any case, MTV, as they are wont to do, recently asked comedian/actor Dane Cook what comic book character he’d most like to play, and Cook mentioned The Riddler for the Nolan “Batman” films. Or as Cook puts it, “that would be bad-ass.” Check out the full interview below.
Dane Cook is a pretty hit-and-miss comedian. You either love him or you don’t. There doesn’t seem to be any real middle ground when it comes to his comedy. I liked him in the beginning — his energy onscreen is awesome. But I haven’t really followed him in the last few years, mostly because I’m all about Brian Regan now, and Cook’s crazy, flipping out onstage doesn’t do it for me anymore.
But hey, Cook as the Riddler in a “Batman 3″? I guess that would be okay. To be honest with you, I’d prefer never to see the Riddler in any of Nolan’s “Batman” [...]

It’s a short teaser, and pretty much what you already saw in the Comic Con bootleg versions, though without the profanity and bloodletting. It’s mildly kick ass, but I suppose that’s to be expected given that this is the filmmaker’s first real introduction of the movie to the masses. They can’t exactly go full-bore with a foul-mouthed Hit-Girl now, can they? I suspect that’s coming later in the form of a Red Band trailer, though. Really, you can’t hide the fact that this is one vulgar movie, with much of the vulgarity coming out of the mouth of a tweener.

Then again, I kinda wish they hadn’t gotten rid of Dallas Bryce Howard’s Gwen Stacy (one of the brighter light in the much-maligned “Spider-Man 3″, if you ask me), but what are you gonna do, right? Citing “reliable sources”, Mania says that McAdams (soon to be seen in “Sherlock Holmes”) has “met with producers” to play Felicia Hardy, aka The Black Cat in Sam Raimi’s continuation of the franchise.
In the comics, the curvaceous The Black Cat was a burglar named Felicia Hardy who crossed Spider-Man, ended up becoming smitten with him, eventually reforming, and now works part-time as a crimefighter. Her character was never really a big part of Spidey’s Rogues Gallery, and from the start she was always more of a Catwoman character to his Batman. The two even shacked up for a time, with Spidey revealing his secret identity to her.

It seems like everyone with some action movie clout has tried to make a “Sgt. Rock” movie at one point or another in Hollywood, with each big name eventually falling by the wayside. The latest stab at bringing the tough Sergeant and his merry killing men to the big screen comes courtesy of Warner Bros., who has attached “I am Legend” director Francis Lawrence to lead the charge. The catch? Forget WWII, the boys are done fighting Nazis.
The movie will be based on the D.C. Comic that starred Sgt. Frank Rock, the Thompson-armed leader of Easy Company, who first appeared in a 1959 issue of “Our Army at War” before it was renamed “Sgt. Rock” in 1977. The comic ran until 1988, and usually featured Rock and his Easy Company doing impossible missions behind enemy lines. The last director attached to the project was Brit Guy Ritchie, but he’s since departed to take a shot at “Lobo”, another comic book [...]

IGN’s got your first look at four new character posters for Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming “Kick Ass” movie. Basically, it’s ass shots of the four main characters in their full costume get-up getting ready for battle. Or going to a Halloween party. Hey, what do I know what they do when they’re not out fighting crime?
Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.
Starring Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Xander Berkeley, Omari Hardwick, Tamer Hassan, Clark Duke, Lyndsy Fonseca, and directed by Matthew Vaughn.

According to comic book movie go-to guy David Goyer, who right now is busy shepherding the show “FlashForward” on TV, and who has just been handed the reins to the “Ghost Rider” franchise, his take on the guy with the flaming skull won’t necessarily be a reboot of the series. That seems to make sense, considering that the franchise only just started 2 years earlier. It will, however, continue on with business as if you’ve never seen the 2007 version or, indeed, need to know anything about the first movie to “get” his sequel.
Goyer tells MTV:
“It’s not exactly a reboot. I hate to say it’s more realistic, because he’s got a flaming skull for a head, but it’s a bit more stripped down and darker. It’s definitely changing tone. What ‘Casino Royale’ was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to ‘Ghost Rider.’”
Awesome. I’ve always wondered what Ghost Rider leaping across rooftops parkour-style would look like. We’re gonna [...]

Not content to have just a bunch of old dudes in their movie, Summit Entertainment has added two younger castmembers to their live-action adaptation of Warren Ellis’ “Red”. Well, “younger” in comparison to star Willis and co-stars Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren, anyway. They are John C. Reilly and “Weed” star Mary-Louise Parker.
John C. Reilly, who is equally at home in comedies as well as dramas, will play a fellow retired CIA agent who is convinced everyone is out to kill him. They call that paranoia, but only if it’s not true. Since this is a movie about killer CIA assassins, he’s probably not paranoid.
Mary-Louise Parker, meanwhile, will play the love interest to Willis’ character. She is a federal pension worker who becomes embroiled in John Mclane’s bid to stay alive and ahead of some young high-tech assassin types trying to snuff him out for good. For you see, Willis is playing an ex-CIA operative who has since retired, when [...]

I don’t have a clue what Helen Mirren is doing in an action movie starring Bruce Willis called “Red”, but word from the trades is that she’s joining the cast of the Willis actioner, and she won’t exactly be playing his mum, as they say across the pond. Instead, Mirren will play an old associate of Willis’ character, a woman with a lethal set of skills. Despite her classy resume, Mirren isn’t a total novice to these type of roles. She once played a hitwoman in 2005’s “Shadowboxer”. It’s actually the kind of role I can totally see Joan Allen of “The Bourne” films and “Death Race” in, but that’s neither here nor there and honestly, I don’t know why I brought it up.
The movie, which also stars Morgan Freeman, has Willis playing a retired CIA black ops specialist who is pulled back into the game when high-tech assassins show up intent on retiring him — permanently. By that I [...]

I hate to be all pessimistic on ya, but let’s face it, Warren Ellis’ “Black Summer” ain’t ever gonna get made into a live-action big-budget Hollywood movie. And without the big budget, it’s never going to be done right, which probably means it won’t get made. You’d need a “Watchmen”-sized budget to make this thing, especially if you plan on being even just a little bit faithful to Ellis’ original comic book. Of course, that hasn’t stopped the guys at the fledgling Vigilante Entertainment from optioning the comics for a possible movie adaptation anyway, so God bless them for feeling ambitious.
If you’ve never read Ellis’ “Black Summer”, it was a bloody, messy comic book about a gang of vigilante superheroes called “The Seven Guns” who got themselves all “wired” up. This results in them being able to make guns out of their asses. Okay, that’s not really true, but basically these guys went from college homeboys to Supermen (and gals) [...]

Sure, he’s a famous comic book writer, but what Scotsman Mark Millar (writer of “Wanted” and the upcoming “Kick-Ass”) really, really wants to do is direct big action movies. Okay, maybe not really wants to do, but he’s been offered the opportunity, and the writer of “Wanted” and the upcoming “War Heroes” has said yes. In fact, he said Yes a while ago, since according to Millar himself, his directorial debut will commence principal photography in March 2010. Under the thread title: “MILLAR TO DIRECT SUPERHERO MOVIE”, Mark Millar writes on his official forum:
Bet you didn’t see THAT coming, laddies and lassies!
But this is one of several big surprises planned for next year and you’ll hear a bit more about this in February when we start to release details. What is it? Who is it about? Well, that’s all a secret for now, but I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with [...]
