Even if I were the world’s greatest clairvoyant and had envisioned the coming of Blu-ray only a few years back, I still would not have believed this could have happened: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition.” The mere title sends shivers down my spine — not so much owing to the fact that somebody went balls-to-the-wall to create and market such an elaborate Blu-ray boxed set, but because of the whole “25th Anniversary” thing. You see, I was there when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles conquered the world the first time around. That, combined with the little-known-truth that I am creeping up on yet another birthday, has me shuddering at any montage of words that reminds me how old I am truly getting.
The other unbelievable thing about the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition” is the fact that Warner Home Entertainment…well…did it!
I could see Warner releasing the dynamic “Dirty Harry Collection.” [...]

(Guest Movie Review by Dedpool)
So it’s finally here. DC Animated’s and Warner Premiere’s newest direct to video release, “Green Lantern: First Flight” has finally touched down and oh what a ride it was. Timed almost perfectly with DC Comic’s summer long Green Lantern centric, universe wide crossover “Blackest Night” and the revelation that Ryan Reynolds will be playing Silver Age GL, Hal Jordan in the upcoming live-action release, “First Flight” sets the stage for all those unfamiliar with the emerald ring slinger, and gives something long overdue to fans of the character.
Without giving too much away, the movie goes like this: Hal Jordan, a cocky but fun loving test pilot is whisked away to the crash site of dying alien Abin Sur. Sur is a member of the intergalactic police force known as “The Green Lantern Corps.” After bequeathing his ring to Jordan (the first human ever to be chosen by one of the rings), he tells him [...]

All he wanted to do was live a quiet, uneventful life with his sexy Indian live-in girlfriend, but they just wouldn’t leave him alone. They being pretty much everyone who isn’t him. Plus, he’s got a hairy brother who insists on roping him back into their reindeer games. Such is life for the feral midget mutant Canucklehead. Of course, Hugh Jackman is not a midget, which is something we’ve already come to accept ever since Bryan Singer’s “X-Men”, though comic book fans will no doubt bulk at a lot of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s”, well, origins. “Wolverine” is the first of a proposed franchise that would spotlight a different character from the X-Men universe. The viability of said franchise, of course, depends entirely on how “Wolverine” performs at the box office. Will we eventually see “X-Men Origins: Deadpool”? “X-Men Origins: Gambit”? Only the film’s weekend box office knows.
Up first for the would-be comic book franchise is Hugh Jackman in “X-Men Origins: [...]

Moviegoers not prone to surf the Internet scouring for the latest movie news on an upcoming comic book movie probably has no clue that Lexi Alexander, the director of “Punisher: War Zone” is a woman. A very attractive and fetching female at that. In fact, they might be thinking that this Lexi guy is a pretty sick individual after the credits on “War Zone” have rolled, as the film is one brutal, balls-to-the-wall violence-a-thon. You know the type of things only guys are supposed to like and actually produce. If you can think of a way to kill a man (Knife to the head? Check. Chair leg to the eye? Covered. Arrow through the neck? Got ya covered.), Lexi Alexander has beaten you to the punch and put it into “War Zone”. This is, as promised, a comic book movie patterned after the brutally violent Garth Ennis Punisher comic books of recent years. Needless to say, kids need not attend.

Since 1989, there have been six Batman films: Two starring Michael Keaton, one with Val Kilmer, one with George Clooney, and now two with Christian Bale. In these films, Batman has fought a line-up of villains that includes, we’ll go order: the Joker (Jack Nicholson), the Penguin (Danny DeVito), Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), the Riddler (Jim Carrey), Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), and Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy). In his latest venture, “The Dark Knight,” Batman comes full circle again tackling the Joker (Heath Ledger). (Scarecrow makes a 10-second early cameo, and Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart) is again featured, but more on that later.)
Why is the Joker back in action? Because of all of Batman’s arch rivals, Joker is the most intriguing but also the most repellent. Not that you would have known that by watching the 1960s TV series, Cesar Romero played the role, or even by viewing Tim Burton’s 1989 film, in [...]

“30 Days of Night” has been billed as a new take on the Vampire movie. After watching it, the only ‘new’ element I can identify is that the vampires are full-on bad guys this time around. None of that tortured soul, conflicted motivations, touchy-feely nonsense. Just hard core, mean spirited blood sucking and mutilation. Sounds good, right? A horror movie that actually has detestable bad guys. That paints in black and white rather than shades of grey. A purveyor of old-school ultra-violence for the Type-A personality. Well, in theory, yes. But theory and reality are often quite different.
“30 Days of Night” is the sophomore effort from director David Slade, who’s debut feature, “Hard Candy,” was a wicked, if overly ambitious, little psychological thriller. In “30 Days of Night,” he’s gone fully main stream with a fairly formulaic vampire romp. The film begins with a few informative notes about the [...]

All things considered, “Spider-Man 3″ isn’t such a bad way to kick off the 2007 Summer, which is sure to be a major treat for movie fans, with “Transformers”, “Live Free or Die Hard”, and the third “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie all scheduled at about the same release dates. If nothing else, “Spider-Man 3″ is a nice two and a half hour diversion from the summer heat, because frankly, it could have been better. Lots better. But then again, if you are one of those people who reads reviews before going to the movies, you would have already heard this refrain: “Spider-Man 3″ has one villain too many, resulting in too many things going on at once.
The third in the highly successful arachnid franchise picks up where “Spider-Man 2″ left off. (By the way, let me just say that I love the fact that the “Spider-Man” franchise doesn’t feel the need to subtitle their sequels. Love it.) Peter Parker [...]

In 1999, Frank Miller wrote and drew (with colors by Lynn Varley) a limited series comic book (now known as “graphic novels” because, one presumes, it sounds better) called “300″. It told the tale of Spartan King Leonidas, who went for a walk “somewhere up north” with 300 of his “personal bodyguards” when he was not allowed to take Sparta’s army to go meet the invading Persian hordes, led by their self-proclaimed God-King Xerxes. The year was 480 B.C., and Xerxes had determined to finish what his father Darius had failed decades before — conquer Hellenic Greece, or burn it to the ground trying. Zach Snyder’s “300″ is a faithful adaptation of Frank Miller’s story, but it is not a faithful re-telling of what actually transpired that day at Thermopylae, aka The Hot Gates, and the difference should be noted.
Gerard Butler (“Reign of Fire”) slips on the bronze helmet and picks up the heavy shield (but curiously retains his heavy [...]

In a blurb I wrote in my ‘Best of 2005′ list, I declared “A Bittersweet Life” to be “one of the slickest pieces of stone-cold machismo to slide across the silver screen since ‘Scarface.”‘ Well, I think we have a strong challenger for that title in Zach Snyder’s “300.” The latest film adaptation of a Frank Miller limited series comic book, “300″ tells the tale of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., where a small contingent of 300 Spartan warriors held the mighty Persian army at bay for three days, enough time to allow the rest of Greece’s bickering city-states to assemble a united front, in particular Athens’ navy, in defense of their nation.
The film opens with a brief tutorial on the Spartan way of life. We learn that newborn male Spartans not deemed perfect are tossed over a cliff to their death, and those that are spared are trained to kill from the time they can walk. At [...]

(Movie Review by Richard Lewis) I sat down in the theater with a big smile on my face. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that I had managed to somehow find a seat up front in a sold out show. Frankly, I think it’s just because I actually like superhero movies. I normally give these films the benefit of the doubt and judge them on their own merits, based on how well the film accomplishes what it sets out to do. In the case of “Ghost Rider”, the film started out well enough, and the set-up is good — a tale of young love gone awry, a deal made with the devil, loss, lost loved ones, lost love, lost soul, and a chance for redemption. All very dramatic, eternal themes.
In a desperate attempt to save the life of his cancer-stricken father, young stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) makes a deal with the devil. Except in this [...]

If you enjoyed Marvel’s initial ventures into direct-to-DVD animation with “The Ultimate Avengers” and its sequel, then the company’s third offering, “The Invincible Iron Man”, will probably go straight into your DVD collection. And why not? It’s everything you could possibly want from your comic book movie, animated or otherwise, filled with healthy doses of superhero heroics, world-saving battles, and even a plot twist or two just for kicks. As with its previous two films, Marvel continues to aim its animated line towards a more adult audience, which means you won’t feel pressure to call the kids over to watch the movie with you in an attempt to justify your purchase of a — gulp — “cartoon” movie.
“The Invincible Iron Man” tells the origins of ol Shellhead well before his recruitment into the Avengers, or even before he ever thought about doing anything superheroic with his high-tech inventions. The Tony Stark we are introduced to (voiced by Marc Worden) is [...]

“X-Men: The Last Stand” is the third installment in the popular comic book franchise originally shepherded onto the big screen by director Bryan Singer in 2000, and was followed up by an equally successful sequel in 2003. Part three says goodbye to Singer, who opted out of the property in order to lavish his fanboy attentions on the Last Son of Krypton, aka the further re-imagined adventures of Superman in “Superman Returns”. From all appearances, it would seem as if new director Brett Ratner (the “Rush Hour” movies) has done a decent enough job in Singer’s stead. But while Ratner didn’t screw the pooch, as it were, he doesn’t exactly impress, either.
Written by Simon Kinberg (”Mr. and Mrs. Smith”) and Zak Penn (”X-Men 2″), “The Last Stand” returns the entire original cast, as well as introducing new ones into the mix. The plot this time centers on the emergence of a mutant cure, which when injected into a mutant effectively [...]

“Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise of the Panther” is the sequel to Marvel’s first line of animated direct-to-video superhero franchise, “Ultimate Avengers”, which pitted a team of superheroes led by a resurrected World War II supersoldier named Captain America against alien invaders. That same alien menace returns in “Rise of the Panther”, this time in the isolated African nation of Wakanda. Led by their own version of a supersoldier named Kleiser, who has apparently taken to liking his Nazi garb (the alien having surfaced during World War II like the good Captain), the aliens are after something underneath Wakanda that the natives are unwilling to give up, having based much of their technology, as well as defenses, from it.
After his father, the Black Panther, is killed by Kleiser, young T’Challa assumes the throne, as well as the costume. T’Challa seeks help from Captain America , who has faced Kleiser before in World War II, and indeed still fears the seemingly unkillable [...]

Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns” is pretty damn good, but it could have been pretty damn great. It is very much in the vein of what Singer did with the “X-men” franchise, and as such “Returns” feels like the Superman version of the first “X-Men” movie, before Singer unleashed the full fury of mutant power with “X-Men 2″. Since the last time we saw him, when Christopher Reeve was wearing the blue and red tights, the Man of Steel is still very much Godlike in his abilities, but he’s also much more human than we’ve ever seen him. Helicopter mini-gun rounds bounce off his chest and .45 caliber bullets fired at close range at his eyeball doesn’t even make him flinch, but a sharp retort from the love of his life hits him like a ton of bricks. Our God may be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but his emotions are still easy to prick by the [...]

The year is 2020 and the world is in turmoil. The US has collapsed into civil war brought about by plague, while across the pond Great Britain has fallen under the iron grip of a fascist, Christian conservative regime led by the domineering High Chancellor Sutler (John Hurt, “Hellboy”). Broadcast in Hi-Def on all televisions in England via the state run network, Sutler verbally bludgeons the people into submission with his daily tirades about terrorism, security and obedience, using the motto ‘Strength through Unity, Unity through Faith’. Most forms of art and literature are outlawed as subversive and the populace is under strict nightly curfews enforced by patrols of brutal police units known as Fingermen. Ideological dissidents and undesirables such as homosexuals and Muslims have all been deported or carted off to internment camps in the name of security and societal stability.
Against this backdrop we meet Evey (Natalie Portman), an aspiring actress [...]

“Ultimate Avengers: The Movie” is apparently Marvel Comics’ first salvo at the direct-to-video market, having conquered theaters with one successful comic book movie after another. The plan, it seems, is to release one major DTV animated movie every year or so, using the Ultimates comic book line as source material. (For those who don’t know, the Ultimates line is Marvel Comics’ “re-imagining” of their popular characters; basically a grittier rebirth of traditional staples such as the Avengers, etc.) From everything that I’ve read, “Ultimate Avengers” the movie is very much a faithful (plot-wise) adaptation of the source material, except with much of the R-rated themes that the Ultimates line is known for excised in order to achieve the financially desirable PG-13 rating.
Opening at the tail end of World War II, “Ultimate Avengers” finds Stars and Stripes superhero Captain America jumping into action against the last German stronghold. Those rascally Germans, very much sore losers it appears, are in cahoots with [...]

Of all the characters in the Marvel Universe, you have to wonder why Lion’s Gate chose Man-Thing, a lower tiered comic book character, to make into a movie. Unless you’re a die-hard comic book fan, it’s doubtful you’ve ever heard of the character; and even if you did used to read comics, it’s even more doubtful you’re a fan of this particular one. For whatever reason, Lion’s Gate did decide to make the plunge, and the result is a surprisingly good effort.
In “Man-Thing”, former big city lawman Kyle Williams (Matthew Le Nevez) has arrived in the town of Bywater , Louisiana to assume the post of sheriff. He’s looking forward to a quiet tenure in the tiny haven that borders the local swamp, but quickly discovers an alarming amount of disappearances that were covered up by his predecessor, who himself also mysteriously vanished. Kyle’s problems are compounded when bodies turn up in gruesome states of disrepair, with plants appearing to [...]

Based on one of Marvel Comic’s longest running comic books, “Fantastic Four” the movie follows the adventures of the world’s greatest superhero team. Except when we first meet them they’re not all that fantastic or great, but thanks to the genius of egghead Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) and test pilot pal Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis), a group of people are about to get themselves irradiated by cosmic rays while doing research on the space station of billionaire jerk Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon). Also present for the irradiation is Von Doom’s scientist crush Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) and her thrill-seeking brother Johnny (Chris Evans).
Once irradiated in space, the fivesome returns to Earth, believing all is well. That is, until they begin manifesting strange powers. For Reed, it’s the ability to stretch (plus his hair turns white for some reason); Sue can turn invisible and make force fields; Johnny gets the coolest power of all — the ability to turn his [...]

While watching “Batman Begins”, it’s best not to consider this installment in the Dark Knight’s life and times as being a part of the Burton and Schumacher (I still cringe saying that second name) Batman films. True to advance buzz, Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” is an Origins Story, and one that rarely, if ever, takes its heed from the last four movies in the franchise. You could call it a prequel, but that wouldn’t exactly be correct; if it’s anything, “Batman Begins” is a “re-imagining”, basically a different version of a familiar story. And also true to rumors, Nolan has brought the Caped Crusader almost entirely down to Earth. Almost.
The first hour of “Batman Begins” doesn’t even have Batman anywhere in sight. Instead, the film opens with a disheveled and battered Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale, “The Machinist”) locked up in a Chinese prison, picking fights with anyone who wants a piece of him (which, apparently, a lot of them do). [...]

When I first heard that Robert Rodriguez was going to make a “Sin City” movie, my first reaction went something along the lines of, “Yeah, right, it’s impossible. They’ll never be able to duplicate Miller’s vision. And if they tried, they’ll just foul it up something awful.” Oh how wrong I was! Rodriguez, whose movies have always seemed like the works of a very competent hack (but a hack nonetheless), has not only translated Frank Miller’s graphic novels to the screen with absolute perfection, but “Sin City” might go down in history as the most faithful movie adaptation of a comic book ever. It is that spot on.
More of an anthology than a single movie, “Sin City” tells the tale of Basin City’s lowlife denizens, including but not limited to rough-and-tumble backroom brawler Marv (Mickey Rourke), shady good guy Dwight (Clive Owen), and Hartigan (Bruce Willis), who might just be the only honest cop in the entire Basin City police [...]
