During his 40-year career, George A. Romero has made 17 films, five of which have been about the “living dead.” His last film, the 2005 “Land of the Dead,” had an uncharacteristically large budget, $15 million; a wide theatrical release; and starred several big names, including John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Simon Baker, and Asia Argento. For his latest “zombie” film, “Diary of the Dead,” he decided to scale things back. His budget was only $2 million, had a very limited theatrical release, and contains no Hollywood stars. As far as aesthetics go, it still has a high-end look. The special effects makeup and violence are realistic, and often quite grisly. And with a few exceptions, the acting doesn’t suffer from lack-of-budgetitis, meaning the performers don’t feel as if they are reading off of cue cards. The problems with “Diary of the Dead” are much more than cosmetic.
The film is supposed to be a “documentary” that was filmed by Jason Creed [...]

Just got the DVD cover art and specs for George Romero’s latest zombie opus, “Diary of the Dead” in the mail. In the film, students shooting an indie horror movie discover that the world is literally ending around them as zombies rise from the grave to, well, you know, do what zombies do — eat brains and generally cause a bad time had by all. The entire film is shot from the perspective of the cameras, and re-introduces Romero to his former independent filmmaking days. DVD cover art and specs below.
Synopsis
A group of film students are making an independent horror film when they become trapped in a world being consumed by flesh-eating zombies. In an obsessive, unflinching eye, one filmmaker documents each death on camera. As the lucky survivors take final refuge, the film continues to roll, recording every detail for future generations… if any survive.

George Romero’s “Diary of the Dead” is apparently so good, and has gotten such great feedback, that Romero is already hard at work on a sequel. Mind you, this is before the movie has even been released, and this is only the first time we’ve seen the film’s trailer. Speaking of which, head on below to see the trailer for “Diary of the Dead”.
A group of young film students run into real-life zombies while filming a horror movie of their own.
I’m not sure how long the whole “shot from a camera’s POV” gag goes on in the film, but boy, it sure sounds a lot like the British zombie movie “The Zombie Diaries”. Then again, this is George Romero, the Godfather of zombie movies, so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Everyone who knows me knows that I love zombie movies. And when you put the genius of George Romero behind it, as writer and director, and I’m there come hell or high water. So I was excited about George’s return to indie zombieland with “Diary of the Dead”, and now, before “Dead” has even come out, “Diary of the Dead 2″ is already gearing up for a March 2008 production! Once again, George returns as writer and director, and continues the story left off at the end of “Diary”. I haven’t seen the first one yet (I plan to at the first possible opportunity, of course), but if Romero is already hype about a sequel, then he must really have a good story to tell.
About the sequel from Movies Online:
The “Diary” continues. Our heroes, trapped in the mansion where we left them, battle waves of ravenous zombies, barely escaping alive. In search of a safe place to settle, they commandeer [...]

There isn’t a whole lot in this USA Today article that you don’t already know about George Romero’s return to his zombie roots with “Diary of the Dead”, but it’s still a good read. In case you don’t know, “Diary of the Dead” goes like this:
The action centers on a group of students filming an old-fashioned horror movie for school. The scares turn real when they see shocking TV footage of corpses feasting on the living. The class assignment evolves into a documentary, obsessively shot by Jason (Joshua Close), who is driven to record every terrifying moment of their frantic escape in a Winnebago.
Romero also talks about the critical success but box office failure of “Land of the Dead”, which I really liked except for some obvious parts that I thought George was just trying to hard with the social parallels:
“I’m not bitter,” he says. “I was amazed by the reviews.” But a date switch from fall to summer proved [...]

Say WHAT??? George Romero is directing a NEW zombie movie??? Aw, man, I don’t know what happened to me the day this news popped that I totally missed it. Being a massive fan of zombie movies, and having seen just about every kind there is, I still hold old George Romero in high esteem as the king of zombie movies, and to (belatedly) hear that he’s making a new one just makes me jump with joy. Now the first images of George’s new movie has appeared on the net, and while production stills don’t exactly say anything about a movie’s quality, just seeing that “Diarty of the Dead” is, in fact, in production and rolling for a 2007 release makes me giddy.
More from Fangoria:
“DIARY OF THE DEAD returns us to the beginning of the living dead outbreak, telling the story of a group of college students who document their deadly encounters with the ravenous flesheaters just as the world is [...]
