Good documentaries provide the viewer with an intimate perspective of a person, place, event or period of time. A great documentary either simply educates, if unbiased, or improves social awareness by immersing people in the world being documented. Renaiassance Village, while admirable in it’s intended goal, ultimately fails to adequately tell the complete story, thereby threatening to leave the viewer feeling confused and phlegmatic… much like the people it portrays. The effect Hurricanes Katrina and Rita had on New Orleans, and the surrounding areas, went way beyond tragic. It was a disaster of biblical proportions. Millions were left homeless and with very few options. Some had very little, or nothing at all, before they were displaced by the storm. Eventually, those poor souls are the ones that this movie is really about.
The movie opens with a short clip of a young, freckle-faced boy of about eleven talking directly to the camera. “Can I swear?” he asks, candidly. He then, suddenly, [...]

Morgan Spurlock, the man famous for putting on the pounds eating McDonalds three meals a day for thirty days in Super Size Me, is back and he’s on a mission, a global one this time. He’s decided that he doesn’t want to bring his unborn child into a world where the US can’t find one lone man who is spreading terror into the hearts and minds of millions… billions, really. Spurlock has decided to take his quest to the wide, wide world and ask everyone he finds, “Where In The World Is Osama bin Laden?”
Spurlock is famous for turning his documentaries into a personal issue, including everyone around him, even to the point of including his own wife (who was his girlfriend/fiance in Super Size Me). So, in that spirit, I’ve decided to include my own family in this review, Spurlock-style.
Knowing that the subject would be a little heavy, my wife and I started our adventure by explaining to our [...]

As the credits rolled at the end of “The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief” (2006), I immediately thought of “Leaving Las Vegas,” “The Grifters,” and “Requiem for a Dream,” three feature films that have also left me with a similar sense of numbness and depression. All of these films are about addiction, and the people who fall into an endless cycle of abuse. But what makes “The Great Happiness Space” stand out from the other three is it isn’t fiction.
Documentary filmmaker Jake Clennell trains his camera on the “Stylish Club Rakkyo,” a “boys host club” in Minami, which is in Osaka City, Japan. Its twenty-something owner, Issei, tells us early on that his club ranks among the Top 10 most popular in the city, which is quite a feat considering the fact that the streets are lined with them. He has 20 employees, all of them about his age, who spend their salaries on looking good [...]

When watching documentaries there is, commonly, a great deal of material that needs to be overlooked in order to fully enjoy the film. Typically, the cinematography, the editing and a number of other purely technical aspects have to be “gotten used to” before one can completely immerse themselves in the world the storyteller is trying to portray. In Fight Or Flight, the only aspect that seems to need to be overlooked is the lack of background information.
On first viewing, the entire first half hour of the film is spent trying figure out who the principle really is and what the reasons behind the story are. There is no narration, whatsoever, and all of the speaking is done completely interview style with most of the people unidentified. That, in and of itself, is intriguing because the timeline of the story and each new location are clearly titled. The difficulties in immersing oneself in the [...]

Every boy grows up loving videogames, whether it be the clunky arcades of the ’80s or the virtual fighters of the ’90s and beyond, but we never loved them as much as the men in “King of Kong”. My biggest commitment to videogames peaked at skipping school while in Middle School to spend the entire day at the local laundrymat, playing games with a pocket full of pennies. (The arcades of the ’80s were built in a manner where, if you were creative and nimble-fingered enough, you could activate a free game by “popping” a penny upwards into the game’s change receptacle.) However, compared to the men in “King of Kong”, I and every other kid that ever tried their hand at Donkey Kong are hopeless amateurs.
“King of Kong” begins by chronicling the rise and eventual leveling off of the 1980s arcade craze, back when Pac-Man, Galaga, and Donkey Kong represented the best gaming technology out there. The documentary then [...]

Anthony Gilmore’s “Behind Forgotten Eyes” is an unendingly mesmerizing tale of cruelty, survival, and the indomitable human spirit. It is at times gut wrenching, and at other times a truly inspiration tribute to women who refuse to admit defeat, even in the face of great and impossible odds. You might think you know about the comfort women of Asia, but you don’t know the whole story until you’ve delved into the world of “Behind Forgotten Eyes”. In their own words, three Korean women tell you about the horrors they endured during World War II, dark memories that continue to haunt their dreams to this day. And you’ll be asking yourself, “In their shoes, could I ever hope to be that strong?”
Narrated by “Lost” star Yunjin Kim, “Behind Forgotten Eyes” is book ended by an animated story about a young Korean girl who is conscripted into sexual slavery by the Japanese Army during World War II. The animation is purposefully simple, [...]

“Dong” is a companion piece to Chinese director Jia Zhangke’s prize winning “Still Life”, and both played at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. Interestingly, it was this documentary which was actually planned first, with the joint project coming about after Jia was invited to the area by a painter to capture his work on film. Although the two films are probably best viewed together, sharing many of the same themes and locations, “Dong” works well as a stand-alone piece in the director’s trademark cryptic manner.
The film follows a painter called Liu Xiaodong, and is split into two parts, the first being set in the spectacular Three Gorges Dam area (as was “Still Life”), where he attempts to paint a large picture of twelve men who are working on demolishing buildings for the project. As he paints, he grows closer to his subjects and their lives, and this in turn begins to express itself in his work. The second half [...]

(Movie Review by Christiaan Harden) When Debbie Melnyk and Nick Caine, two self-proclaimed progressive liberal filmmakers, set out to make a biography celebrating Michael Moore, they began as admirers and fans. After discovering a number of otherwise unknown facts about his documentaries, however, they ended up feeling, in their own words, ‘disappointed and disillusioned’. Provocative and thoughtful, their documentary “Manufacturing Dissent” provides a measured and welcomed alternative to the myriad of right-wing anti-Moore polemics widely available on the other side of the Atlantic. “Manufacturing Dissent” is an admirably honest and thoroughly rewarding piece of documentary filmmaking, and a must not only for fans of Moore, but for anybody interested in where the boundaries of documentary filmmaking ethics lie.
Despite attempts by the filmmakers to avoid a “Roger and Me”-style contributor chase, “Manufacturing Dissent” bares more than a passing resemblance to Moore’s breakthrough 1989 documentary. Repeated attempts are made by Melnyk and Caine, who are also husband and wife, to secure [...]

Unlike documentaries on musicians and even visual artists, docs focused on major literary figures are far and few in between. Of course, there are the obligatory A&E spotlights on Mark Twain and Shakespeare, but when I am scouring my online movie provider of choice and can’t find anything on Dostoevsky, I start to wonder. Is the public still moved by fiction, or just celebrity memoirs and diet books? And some authors, especially in the last century, lived some absurdly reckless lives comparable with the content of their work. Recently, I watched a doc on William S. Burroughs and fell asleep within thirty minutes. If filmmakers can’t make an interesting piece about the mind that produced “Cities of the Red Night”, which is the most utterly insane novel I have read besides Ellis’s “American Psycho”, then something is very wrong.
Whether because of better funding or a higher level of self-investment, director John Dullaghan and crew did a bravura job of chronicling [...]

“How Is Your Fish Today?” began life as a British-commissioned Chinese documentary about Mohe, a small village in the northernmost part of China , lying on the Russian border. However, when the crew reached Mohe, a supposedly mystical town where it’s light twenty hours out of the day and the aurora borealis sweeps across the sky, they discovered that it is nothing but a poor fishing village where people live just above the poverty line. Rather than abandon the film due to lack of footage, director Xiaolou Gou synergised what she had filmed with a script written by a friend about a screenwriter searching for inspiration by travelling to Mohe. The result: a film that confidently occupies the shadow land between fiction and reality.
We follow screenwriter Hui Rao (who is actually played by the film’s writer) as he starts work on a script where the protagonist is Lin Hao, a man who has just killed his [...]

It really pays to be born a woman with a genotype predestined for phenotypic cuteness; that is, if you are misfortunate enough to have to be born at all. What can’t they get away with saying? Who is going to persecute them? Men? An attractive woman could call almost any man by his racial slur-name and they probably wouldn’t react with offense. Women? Well, they usually have a problem with each other anyways. Hence, “Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic”, an extremely obscene, frontier pushing comedy act by quirkily sexy comedienne Sarah Silverman.
Unlike other stand up films, like say, my personal favorite, Martin Lawrence’s “Runteldat”, where Martin lucidly enacts the sticking of his head into his wife’s v**ina to tell his yet unborn child not to f**k with him, Sarah Silverman mixes live footage from a show in Hollywood with skits and music videos. “Jesus is Magic” is more Tenacious D “The Complete Masterworks” than it is Eddie Murphy’s “Raw”, though [...]

Nothing gets me more hype than finding out that a musician I am a fan of is really as fucking weird as I imagined them to be. For instance, Prince. Now, if you’re a rabid Prince enthusiast like myself, you will have watched posted interviews and all of his videos on launch.com at every party you have ever been at where there is a DSL connection and people under the influence to indulge you. Maybe part of my fascination with Prince is that I like to make fun of how ridiculous he is, but empirically speaking, his videos are pretty out there (I recommend the video for “My Name is Prince”). After hearing Kevin Smith’s Prince story in “An Evening with Kevin Smith” however, it was demonstrated to me that the chain links he wears over his face in the aforementioned video are not to hide blemishes, but rather his utter egomaniacal insanity.

Documentaries should always be approached with a grain of salt already in hand. While they always purport to tell ‘the truth’ about their subjects, they invariably choose a side and rely on generous helpings of embellishment to make their point. The crazy genius has always been an easy target for such films, as a quick sampling a biopics show, since mental problems serve as a convenient maudlin device to melt the heart of the audience with minimal effort. The latest such film is “The Devil and Daniel Johnston.”
The movie opens with the titular figure being introduced at a concert in Sliced Bread, USA (aka Austin , Texas ) as “the greatest singer-songwriter alive today.” One has to regard such a claim with a bit of bemusement, especially since Daniel Johnston is a relative unknown outside the underground/indie rock scene. Johnston is a songwriter and artist who came into brief notoriety in the late 80’s and early ’90s for his handmade [...]

As a musician, I truly savor films which are made in effigy, in historical retrospect or just in plain celebration of the lives and artwork of other, considerably better known musicians. And the musician or band in question does not play into this fascination; it is becoming acquainted with small pieces of the people, and their experiences that aided in producing unforgettable songs and cultural movements, which renders me indiscriminate. Basically, I’m open to watching any musical documentary and when asked if I would review “Townes Van Zandt: Be Here to Love Me” I hastily approved the request.
Not immediately familiar with his work, I cued up one of his songs, “To Live is to Fly” and heard a beautiful guitar being plucked under a sweet melancholy voice which sang, “Living’s mostly wastin’ time/ and I’ll waste my share of mine/ but it never feels to good/ so let’s don’t take too long.” This callous, poetic sentiment, which was paradoxically betrayed [...]

Besides all of the generous plants who give us oxygen, photosynthesis which makes that possible, and the 99.5% reliability of the TV turning on everyday if our cable bills have been paid, there is nothing we over-nourished Americans take advantage of more than food. Most of us eat with our eyes; we choose meals and food products that have the shiniest advertisements, the end caps at our nearest super market, or like my mother, we simply buy whatever is on sale.
“The Future of Food” is an informative, well-paced and sometimes appalling documentary that lets even the health conscious consumer know that reading the sodium and saturated fat contents of a product is not enough anymore. Written and directed by Deborah Koons Garcia, the documentary deals with a new and disturbing trend in the food industry that is much more pervasive than the quote un-quote irresponsibility of fast food chains targeted in the popular “Super Size me”. That trend is genetic [...]

On paper, the concept of “The Aristocrats” sounds terrible: it is, essentially, 90 minutes of comedians being interviewed about a very dirty joke with the titular two-word punch line, “The Aristocrats”, and the role said joke plays in the comedy community. From this, one would deduce that the movie would get tiresome after about ten minutes and three different variations of the same joke. However, “The Aristocrats” is in fact a very interesting, philosophical and — above all — funny film that knows just what it’s doing.
As mentioned before, “The Aristocrats” brings together 100 comedians (including the likes of Billy Connelly, Penn and Teller and Robin Williams) to tell their various versions of the same joke, and then talk about its origins. And, as I also mentioned before, it somehow never manages to get boring. The quick cutting and occasional comic genius gracing the screen manages to keep the pace rapid and capture the viewer’s attention all the way through [...]

There is a telling scene in the documentary “Overnight” when Troy Duffy, the documentary’s star, is discussing the fate of his band with his bandmates, wherein he uses the word “we” a lot. What we will come to know about this man named Troy Duffy is that, in his world, the word “we” actually means “I”. As in, “I know what I’m doing, I’m smarter than you, we’re here because of me, and if you don’t listen to me, then go screw yourself, you talentless hacks.” Flushed with signs of success, the bandmates go along with Duffy’s delusional ideas, just as they went along with kicking sand in the face of two of their buddies when Duffy declared them to be worthless. Those two men, Tony Montana and Mark Brian Smith, would go on to assemble a documentary called “Overnight”, about the rise and fall of one Troy Duffy.
“Overnight” begins with newspaper headlines trumpeting the overnight celebrityhood of Troy Duffy, [...]

“Can you believe this? These guys get more tail than I do.”
Once the above thought pops into your head while watching the documentary “Murderball”, pity for the people being profiled goes right out the window. Then again, if you were to tell a guy like Mark Zupan that you pity him, he’s liable to punch you in the crotch, then headbutt you to the ground, before rolling you into the ground with his dented, gladiator-style wheelchair. To paraphrase one of Zupan’s childhood friends, being in a chair didn’t turn Zupan into an asshole, he already was one. The same is true for Zupan’s arch nemesis, the Benedict Arnold-inspired Joe Soares, a former member of the U.S.A. wheelchair rugby team who, after being cut, vows to defeat his former teammates by heading up north to coach Team Canada . To be sure of Joe’s inherent asshole tendencies, you only need ask his non-jock son Robert, the target of Joe’s constant disciplining.
Although [...]

“Gunner Palace” is a frank and at times profanity-laden look at the life of the 2/3 Field Artillery, which found itself occupying Uday Hussein’s bombed out palace after the end of major combat in the second Iraq War. Now tasked with patrolling a section of Baghdad that is also home to a volatile Mosque, “Gunner Palace” follows the day-to-day existence, gripes, patrols, failures and successes of the men (and woman) of the 2/3. Filled with catchy heavy rap beats and electric guitar riffs courtesy of some of the battalion’s young men, cameraman/co-director Michael Tucker guides his camera through the streets and nights of Baghdad, searching not for answers, but rather what it means to be a soldier in an occupied land.
For those concerned that “Gunner Palace” is a censored, propagandistic look at the war, they needn’t worry. A censored film wouldn’t show you a soldier sarcastically showcasing a humvee covered in Iraqi scrap metal that the soldiers welded on themselves [...]

If your interest lies in Hong Kong Cinema of old, the new documentary “Chop Socky: Cinema Hong Kong” is what you’re looking for. “Chop Socky” is an hour-long, made-for-TV documentary that has assembled quite an impressive history of Hong Kong’s “chop socky” past, from the early days to the present, covering every single innovation and innovators of the genre with impressive speed and detail. If you’re a diehard fan of the genre, the film’s brisk 55 minutes may not be quite enough for you; then again, if you’re a diehard fan of anything, nothing is ever quite enough, hence the term “diehard”.
For me personally, “chop socky” refers to the kung fu films of the ’70s and (to an extent) the ’80s, where a lone, valiant hero faces off against countless foes and, once he’s dispatched of the main baddie, is himself killed in glorious, heroic fashion. Granted, this is a very limited view of the genre, but for the purpose [...]
