“Transformers 2″. Last week was full of “Transformers 2″ movie news. I don’t know if that’s the result of Michael Bay’s “Operation Confusion” moving full steam ahead, but it seems unlikely. More remakes of sci-fi classics and not-so-much classics, and “Dune” finally gets moving toward actually happening. Maybe. This, and more, in your condensed version of The Sci-Fi Week That Was.
Platinum Studios Preps Final Orbit Comic for Big Screen – A movie based on a comic book about thrill-seeking pretty people who get trapped on a space station. I say they had it coming.

If you like genre television, then you’re going to love FOX come 2009, because the network has packed its schedule with new shows from fanboy-favorite names like Joss Whedon (he’s got Dollhouse with Eliza Dushku) and J.J. Abrams (Fringe with, er, that guy from Dawson’s Creek). Plus, there are a couple of returning favorites, like the sophomore season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and the fourth season of the serialized Prison Break. They’re still, er, running, I think.
From FOX’s press release, starting with their two new high-profile shows:
FRINGE (Tuesdays, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT): From J.J. Abrams (”Lost”), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the team behind “Star Trek,” “Mission: Impossible III” and “Alias,” comes a new drama that will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line between science fiction and reality. When an international flight lands at Boston’s Logan Airport and the passengers and crew have all died grisly deaths, FBI Special Agent OLIVIA DUNHAM (newcomer Anna Torv) is called [...]

What would a sci-fi week in review be without a Stargate or X-Files sequel news? Well it would be pretty damn boring, that’s for sure. The previous week’s sci-fi movie and TV news also includes a huge helping of solid casting news about Joss Whedon’s new FOX show Dollhouse, which stars Eliza Dushku and now, a couple of more castmembers from Whedon’s previous shows. And finally, some Star Wars and BSG news as well.

Stargate: Continuum Bootleg Trailer – The first trailer for the upcoming Stargate DVD movie, “Continuum”. It was bootleg out of some convention or festival or the such. Looks good.

Writer/producer/director Joss Whedon was recently MC’ing the wrap party for “Y: The Last Man” comic book series (yes, they’re doing that now, even for comic books; it’s a weird, weird world, folks), when he was asked about his upcoming Fox TV series Dollhouse. Here’s what he said.
More:
What about Dollhouse will draw in your Buffy and Firefly fans?
Well, Eliza (Dushku). Duh. It’s very different than the stuff I’ve done before, but at the same time it’s still a very hardcore examination of the human condition. It really sort of boils it down to who are we, how are we programmed, what do we need, what is okay about us, and what is really not okay. It’s the most morally gray thing I’ve ever done. I think it might actually anger a lot of my fans, but there are questions I still have to ask. Ultimately I think it will intrigue them because that.
We keep hearing that the strike will be over [...]

Joss Whedon has shaken off the shackles of Wonder Woman and finally gotten over the failure of Firefly and is returning to TV with a new show, although where he’s decided to place it is open to debate. The show is Dollhouse, and the place is FOX. It’s one of those shows with a high-concept premise that wows, and it’ll premiere sometime in 2008 with Eliza Dushku fronting it. FOX has already given Whedon a seven-episode commitment, and expects to shell out between $1.5 million to $2 million per episode. Again, I’d have prefer it if Whedon didn’t go into business with FOX again, after how the network killed his Firefly show a few years ago. But hey, if Whedon doesn’t mind what they previously did to him, who am I to get my boxers into a bunch over it?
More about Dollhouse from EW:
[The show] will chronicle the exploits of a group of individuals who are “imprinted with personality packages” [...]
