The end of the world has been a popular topic in Science Fiction and Fantasy films for as long as we can remember. But while the topic is well worn, the subject has been kept relatively fresh as the causes of our demise have evolved with popular politics – nuclear holocaust, alien invaders/Communists, wayward meteors and Global Warming. The disaster du jour happens to be plagues and the latest entry into this post-Apocalyptic action genre is “Doomsday.”
Directed by Brit Neil Marshall (“The Descent”), “Doomsday” presents us with a near future Scotland that has been overrun by a vicious virus called ‘Reaper’ which causes its victims to die horrible, blood-spurting deaths. When things get out of hand, a gravelly voice-over tells us, Scotland is completely walled off from the rest of Great Britain to allow nature to take its course and the plague victims to die out. That was in 2008. Fast forward 30 years and [...]

Who? Horton, that’s who. The Jim Carrey CGI-animated movie “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who” took the box office over the weekend with $45 million. Not bad for a movie budgeted at $85 million, and produced by an animation company not called “Pixar”. I guess blatant (though funny) cross-promotions with American Idol didn’t hurt, either. This marks Carrey’s fourth biggest opening weekend, topped by the $67 million of “Bruce Almighty”.
“Horton Hears a Who” stars Jim Carrey as an elephant and Steve Carrell as the mayor of Who-ville, a town that just happens to reside in a flower.
Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 BC” slipped to second place with $16 million, for a total of $61 million in two weeks of release. That’s a pretty big drop, and will probably mean the film doesn’t reach $100 when all is said and done at the domestic box office. But since the film was made for a (in Hollywood terms) cheap $75 milion, the movie [...]

Leave it to the French to remind us why we really should see Neil Marshall’s new sci-fi/horror thriller “Doomsday”. Yeah, it’s got a groovy premise, and yeah, it promises more of the juicy red stuff that Marshall has become famous for (re: gore, baby, gore!), but it’s also got Rhona Mitra, who, strangely, hasn’t really gotten her due in Hollywood. But leave it to the French to tell us what this movie is really about — a smoking hot woman kicking ass. Check out the French poster for “Doomsday”. Or at least, I think those are French writings. I could be wrong, of course.

Neil Marshall’s sci-fi/actioner “Doomsday” has just gotten a whole lot bloodier with the release of these four Red Band (restricted) clips on the official site. If you were wondering if Marshall had slowed down after “Dog Soldiers” and “The Descent”, the answer would have to be, Hell No.
Great Britain, 2007. A deadly plague, known as the “Reaper Virus,” has broken out, killing hundreds of thousands in its wake. In desperation, the British Government evacuates as many survivors as it can out of the infected area, and then builds a wall, preventing the remainder from escaping. Thirty years later, with the wall still up and the victims all but forgotten, the virus breaks out again. The Government decides to send a crack team of operatives, led by Major Eden Sinclair, into the hot zone to investigate the possibility of a cure.
Get doomed March 14, 2008.

Neil Marshall’s “Doomsday” is one of those movies at the top of my “must-see” list, even though I haven’t exactly heard great things about it. But what the hell, it has three of my favorite movie things: a post-apocalyptic plot, crazy mad max style grungy action, and Rhona Mitra kicking everyone’s ass in a tight black top. I mean, come on, what more can you ask for? How about more images from the movie.
A lethal virus spreads throughout a major country and kills hundreds of thousands. To contain the newly identified Reaper, the authorities brutally quarantine the country as it succumbs to fear and chaos. The literal walling-off works for three decades–until Reaper violently resurfaces in a major city. An elite group of specialists, including Eden Sinclair, is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become [...]

The boys over at Latino Review has gotten their hands on the script for Neil Marshall’s upcoming sci-fi/action/horror movie “Doomsday” (gotta love the genre hybrids), and they’ve done a review of it. You can read the full thing here, or just read the quick bits below. The film is set in Europe, or Scotland and England, to be more specific. The virus (with shades of “28 Days Later”) begins in Scotland without warning, forcing England to quarantine the entire country with a giant friggin’ wall. The film starts with a young Eden (Rhona Mitra) surviving the plague, called the “Reaper virus”. Now fast-forward 30 years later…
The reviewer seems split about his feelings for the script (he specifically is very pissed off about the script’s stab at relevancy via the i-Pod), but here’s the quick summation:
I have nothing against merging genres or creating a pastiche, but the way Marshall has linked things together seems a little clunky. On paper, I [...]

The official site for Neil Marshall’s “Doomsday” has come online, and it has a lot of groovy little nuggets for those interested in the movie. A lot of background stuff, pictures, conceptual art, but no trailer as yet. The film has been in production for a while, and it seems to have been pushed back to 2008, when the original date, I believe, was late 2007. For fans of Marshall’s latest two movies, “Dog Soldiers” and “The Descent”, this is one of the more anticipated horror/sci-fi films of the year (or next year, as the case may be).

“Smallville” TV Series: Clark Kent’s Kryptonian cousin Supergirl will be played by Canadian blondie Laura Vandervoort. I still want to know when Clark will leave that frakkin’ farm already. Seriously, how long is this guy gonna stay there?

The dudes over at Twitchfilm has your first look at the upcoming Neil Marshall sci-fi futuristic horror pic “Doomsday”. Well, actually, it’s just one picture. But what a picture! Rhona Mitra wielding a [something -- gun? sword? tooth pic?] and looking badass and hot doing it. (I think I’m getting the vapors, as they say Down South.) The film’s writer/director Neil Marshall has already had two major cult hits with “Dog Soldiers” and “The Descent”, but he still hasn’t had a real box office hit yet. “Doomsday” could change that — or maybe not. The cast (Malcolm McDowell, Rhona Mitra, Sean Pertwee) aren’t big names, so I’m gonna predict mild box office numbers, but big cult following on DVD.
