It doesn’t pay to be a nice guy (or gal) in a Sam Raimi horror movie. The “Spider-Man” director likes to torture people, especially the really nice ones. Just ask Ash from the “Evil Dead” films. Sam Raimi’s latest plaything is Christine Brown (Alison Lohman), a bank loan officer in “Drag me to hell”, the director’s first return to the horror genre since 1992’s “The Army of Darkness”. The film is billed as Raimi’s return to low-budget horror, but let’s face it, nowadays what qualifies as “low budget” would have been ultra high-budget back in 1979, when Raimi first made “Evil Dead” with Bruce Campbell. For everyone waiting to see the director of mega-budget comic book movies return to his horror roots, “Drag me to Hell” is a good first salvo.
In “Drag me to hell”, our gal Christine has her eyes on the prize – that Assistant Managers position sitting tantalizingly nearby, the same gig asshole co-worker Stu (Reggie Lee) [...]

In case you haven’t heard, Sam Raimi’s return to semi-low budget horror movie making “Drag me to Hell” is set to open later this week. We have five clips for ya from the movie, featuring its young heroine in various stages of, well, being dragged to hell. Basically, if you ever get the chance to star in a Sam Raimi horror movie, I would recommend rethinking it. Sure, you’ll get instant fame and fortune, but THIS is what you have to go through. Oh, who are we kidding. You’re going to say Yes, aren’t you? Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

A new batch of very cool images from Sam Raimi’s return to sorta-low budget horror, “Drag me to Hell”. I’ve never seen a director delight more in punishing his actors than Sam Raimi, and it looks like he sure put alison Lohman through her paces. Bruce Campbell should have warn the little lass what she was getting into. The film opens later this month, but until them, get a load of these new shots from the flick. Can that old hag get any older or haggy? I think not.
Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? While asleep. Yes, it’s that kind of movie. It’s Sam Raimi before “Spider-Man”. The old “Evil Dead” Sam Raimi. Sort of.

Two more TV spots for Sam Raimi’s upcoming “Drag Me to Hell”, his return to (somewhat) low budget horror, because let’s face it, as much as they keep telling us this is Raimi returning to his low-budget roots. It ain’t. Not really. Anyways, it still looks as low-tech as you can get from a Sam Raimi film after three “Spider-Man” CGI-heavy movies, though, so that’s something I suppose. Two new killer 30-second spots below.
A loan officer ordered to evict an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse, which turns her life into a living hell. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.

So does this mean Sam Raimi’s “Drag me to Hell” isn’t the fourth coming of “Evil Dead” that we’ve all been waiting for? Possibly, since it’s doubtful ol Sammy can get back to his low-budget horror groove if “Drag me to Hell” qualifies for a PG-13 rating, which it has officially gotten from the MPAA. Meanwhile, Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno” has earned itself an R-rating after trimming some scenes (and possibly removing others) and re-submitting it to the MPAA. Previously, the MPAA had slapped the raunchy faux documentary with the dreaded NC-17.
“Drag me to Hell”, which is listed as a PG-13 film at IMDB.com for “for sequences of horror violence, terror, disturbing images and language”, stars Alison Lohman as a poor bank loan lass who finds herself cursed by an old gypsy after she denies the old bag a loan. Said loan involves visions of ugly things trying to drag her to hell, hence the title.

Poor Alison Lohman should cheer up. Sure, Sam Raimi probably put her through all kinds of hell for her new movie “Drag me to Hell” (Bruce Campbell will tell you that ol Sammie gets a bit of a sick thrill out of torturing his stars on set), but even if she never stars in another movie for the rest of her life (which is doubtful), she’ll still be able to live on the “Drag me to Hell” role by appearing at horror conventions for years to come. That’s something, right? Okay, maybe not so much, but it’s something to keep in mind. Anyhoo, here are new batches of images from Sam Raimi’s “Drag me to Hell”, which is opening later next month.

Maybe it’s just me, but this new poster for Sam Raimi’s return to kinda low budget horror “Drag Me to Hell” sure looks mighty tempting. It sort of reminds me of Raimi’s “Evil Dead” posters from all those ways back, with a girl in flimsy wear being accosted by bad, bad things, like demons from hell. I guess ol Sammy really is telling us this is his return to his glory days of abusing Bruce Campbell for a buck.

Unfortunately for our young spunky heroine in Sam Raimi’s “Drag me to Hell”, she’s forced to say No in order to nab that spiffy promotion she’s trying to keep the Asian dude from getting.
Okay, I’ll admit it, I’ve taken a couple of potshots at ol Sam Raimi’s ability to make a buck any way he can, namely by slapping his name on anything he can get his hands on. But that still doesn’t change the fact that I’m looking forward to his return to low-budget horror (or as “low budget” as you can get when you’re Sam Raimi, director of three “Spider-Man” films, I mean) with “Drag me to Hell”.
I believe this is our very first look at an image from Sam Raimi’s upcoming “Drag Me to Hell”, his return to small-budget horror moviemaking (how small? I don’t know; but let’s face it, after the gazillion dollars of the “Spider-Man” film, he could make a movie for $50 million and it would still qualify as “low-budget”). It’s also our first looks at David Goyer’s “The Unborn”, with Gary Oldman and the hot girl from “Cloverfield”, as well as “Quarantine”, the zombie movie remake of the Spanish zombie movie called “REC”, which is already gearing up a sequel.
Raimi (Spider-Man) returns to his horror roots (The Evil Dead). Lohman (White Oleander) plays a loan officer who won’t give one to an old lady (Raver) and gets hexed for her heartlessness. ”She makes one bad choice, then she spends the next 80 minutes overpaying for it,” Raimi says.
Starring Alison Lohman, Justin Long, and Jessica Lucas.

Plot: Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer), and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home. In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation.
Ellen Page may not have wanted anything to do with Sam Raimi’s return to moderately budgeted horror movie in “Drag Me to Hell”, but that’s her lost, because Raimi with a limited budget and flying by his wits and whoever he can manage to browbeat into shooting the film with him is a joy to watch. Consider “Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn” as proof that the guy knows how to scare the bejesus out of you. If his latest, “Drag Me to Hell” is half as good as “Dead by Dawn”, it’ll be plenty good.
Via Bloody-Disgusting, Universal Pictures has released an official synopsis of Raimi’s “Drag me to Hell”:
Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy, Evil Dead series) returns to the horror genre with Drag Me To Hell, an original tale of a young woman’s desperate quest to break an evil curse.
Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay [...]

Sam Raimi’s return to indie horror moviemaking has added three more names to the cast: Jessica Lucas (pictured, below), Lorna Raver and David Paymer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucas, fresh from fleeing monsters in “Cloverfield”, will play the roommate and best friend of star Alison Lohman’s character, who according to the script is the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse that threatens to, as the title suggest, drag her to hell. Don’t you hate it when that happens? Pick better friends, I say.
More:
Raver plays Mrs. Ganush, a proud Eastern European woman with an old-world belief system who, when defied and humiliated, vengefully casts the curse. Paymer will play Mr. Jacks, Stephanie’s practical bank-manager boss.
Raimi plans to start production on the film in Los Angeles next month.

Geeky character actor Justin Long has nabbed another major role: he’ll be starring opposite Alison Lohman (who recently replaced the departed Ellen Page) in Sam Raimi’s return to indie horror, the fantastically titled “Drag Me to Hell”. I don’t think anyone would say that Justin Long (pictured) is the “good looking hero type”, but since the movie, written by Raimi and his brother Ivan, is centered around Lohman’s character, the boyfriend/guy friend role is something Long does with aplomb.
More:
Raimi and his brother Ivan penned the screenplay, a morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse. Long will play the boyfriend of Lohman’s character.
Shooting is set to start March 31 in Los Angeles. Lohman replaced Ellen Page, who dropped out of the project last month due to scheduling conflicts.
Long was recently in Bruce Willis’ “Live Free or Die Hard” as — what else? — the hero’s geeky sidekick (pictured below; Long is, er, the guy who isn’t Bruce Willis).

Wow, it didn’t take Sam Raimi very long, did it? A scant one day after Ellen Page declared “scheduling conflict” as a reason for skipping on Raimi’s indie horror “Drag Me to Hell”, the “Spider-Man” director has already landed her replacement — Alison Lohman (”Big Fish”). Obviously Lohman doesn’t have Page’s name — one is an Oscar nominee, and the other, well, who is Alison Lohamn, again?
More:
Producers were looking for another babyfaced star and found one in Lohman, best known for portraying a younger-than-her-years character in “White Oleander.” She recently voiced a role in “Beowulf,” appeared in “Things We Lost in the Fire” and will star in Lionsgate’s “Game.”
I was obviously being facetious when referencing Lohman’s credits. She’s been acting for years and has had major movies to her credit, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone on the street who knows her name. Then again, it’s probably for the best that “Drag Me to Hell” is sold as a [...]

I guess Sam Raimi isn’t “King of the Underworld” after all, because his latest leading lady, almost-Oscar winner Ellen Page has dropped out of his latest, the indie horror “Drag me to Hell”, citing concerns about the script. Or did she? There are conflicting reports on the matter.
The boys at Bloody-Disgusting had this to say about Page’s leave:
We have confirmed this afternoon that young Oscar nominated star Ellen Page (Juno, Hard Candy) has dropped out of Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell and that they are currently re-casting the role. We’re told that “she didn’t like the latest draft of the script,” which I’m sure is completely BS – I bet this is just a case of “I almost won an Oscar cold feet”. Good riddance I say. Universal’s film, which will be directed by Sam Raimi, is a morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse.
Hours after BD’s post, AICN posted this official press release from [...]

Ellen Page sure picked a whopper of a movie to star in post-”Juno”, her breakthrough hit. She’ll be starring in Sam Raimi’s first directorial effort since the Spidey films, the indie-budgeted “Drag Me to Hell”, which Raimi wrote with bro Ivan. According to previous reports, “Hell” is supposed to be Raimi’s return to his “Evil Dead” days — minus the “excessive violence”. But we can at least count on a Bruce Campbell cameo, right?
More:
Universal will distribute in North America, Germany, Spain and Latin America. Mandate International will handle all other international territories. ” Hell” will be produced by Tapert, Grant Curtis and Josh Donen and executive produced by Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake.
It will be the first feature Raimi directs for Ghost House, which has turned out such titles as “The Grudge” movies, “Boogeyman” and “30 Days of Night.”
Shooting starts March 17 in Los Angeles.

A very interesting article in Variety today. As you know, these guys don’t report anything until they’ve gotten their facts straight (well, most of the time, or at least, more often than we Internet dorks do), so when they say Sam Raimi will be returning to his horror roots for “Drag Me to Hell” we believe them, and when they mention that afterwards he’ll be directing “The Hobbit”…?
More about Raimi’s return to videostore horror with “Drag me to Hell”:
The morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse will go into production early next year…
“Sam calls it a ’spook-a-blast,’ a wild ride with all the chills and spills that ‘Evil Dead’ delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film,” Tapert said. “When one has done three very expensive movies, they get used to eating caviar. Sam will have to ponder what it means to come down from the mountaintop for a moment.”
Um, a Sam Raimi that [...]
