The idea of a “Dune” remake bothers me, mostly because I’m a huge, salivating fan of David Lynch’s ambitious 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic novel. It’s certainly a flawed film, and I completely understand that it does not adequately capture the overall feel of the book. Be that as it may, Lynch’s version really strikes a chord with me. However, if someone were to once again tackle this sprawling tale for the big screen, my first choice would not be Peter Berg. Not that I have anything against the guy, mind you, but his slick Hollywood action films do not indicate to me that he’s capable of something as epic in scale as “Dune.” I could be wrong, and I’d love to see him prove it.
Unfortunately, that opportunity may never come to pass. According to trade resource Pajiba, Berg and his production company, Film 44, are no longer attached the project. No word as to why, exactly, he’s decided [...]

“Transformers 2″. Last week was full of “Transformers 2″ movie news. I don’t know if that’s the result of Michael Bay’s “Operation Confusion” moving full steam ahead, but it seems unlikely. More remakes of sci-fi classics and not-so-much classics, and “Dune” finally gets moving toward actually happening. Maybe. This, and more, in your condensed version of The Sci-Fi Week That Was.

Okay, so listing this rumored movie news item under “Dune (2009)” is being a bit optimistic, but what the hey, I’m just that kind of guy. News from Aint-it-Cool-News is that Paramount is looking to acquire the rights to Frank Herbert’s Dune books for director Peter Berg (”The Kingdom”) to bring back to the big screen. The novels have already been made into a movie by David Lynch back in the ’80s, and more recently, the Sci Fi Channel shelled out mega bucks to make a couple of mini-series based on the Dune books. I actually enjoyed Lynch’s version, mostly because it’s just so weird and “out there”, and I happen to like that in my science fiction stories.
AICN quotes a message originally written by Herbert’s grandson Byron Merritt via a message board:
“We’re getting VERY close to a deal. Heard that news today,” he posted on Friday, following that up with, “Although only rumor, I’ve heard that “someone” at the [...]
