Stick a fork in it, the “Escape from New York” remake is done. Well, probably done. It could still get made, but at this point, that is doubtful. The latest news is that the film’s directorial carnival continues, with Len Wiseman and Brett Ratner now out, and now Jonathan Mostow brought in as a screenwriter and possible director. And now, the biggest blow: Gerard Butler, who has been attached to the remake since forever, has left the project over that famous excuse, “creative differences”. But don’t cry for Butler; at last count, the dude has, what, 50 other films going in 2007 and 2008.
More:
Right after his turn as the Spartan in “300,” Butler made a deal to play Snake Plissken in a film bought at auction by New Line. He left for creative differences. New Line is persevering: studio has brought Jonathan Mostow in to rewrite, with an option to direct.
Butler just began production on Lakeshore’s “Game,” which Lionsgate will [...]

So there are two questions that begs to be answered here: 1) Why do fanboys hate Brett Ratner so much?; and 2) Who in the world would give Brett Ratner an “achievement in cinema” anything? The answer to #1 is, fanboys are just weird; and #2, the Savannah Film Festival, that’s who. But anyhoo. The big news coming out of geekland (via AICN) is that Brett Ratner will no longer be directing the “Escape from New York” remake. It was previously reported that Ratner would be replacing Len Wiseman on the remake, but apparently this is not the case, at least according to Ratner himself.
Here’s the original AICN scooper’s email:
I don’t know if this is old news but I can tell you that Brett Ratner isn’t directing the EFNY remake, according to him. He was given an “achievement in cinema” award at the Savannah Film Festival and I managed to ask him afterwards about it and he said that [...]

As much as people were indifferent to Len Wiseman (”Live Free or Die Hard”) directing the remake of John Carpenter’s cult classic “Escape from New York”, I can imagine how they’re going to react when sunlight arrives later today and news that Len Wiseman has been replaced on the project by no other than Brett Ratner. Yes, Brett Ratner. The director who is apparently so Godawful at his job that Jackie Chan has no problems bashing him despite having done three movies for the guy. Yup, that same guy. You fanboys mad yet? Scream, fanboys, scream out loud!
Here’s the news from Aint it Cool News:
I thought I’d still take a moment to fill you in on the latest news on a project near and dear to many loyal readers…
Got word this week that Len Wiseman is officially off Escape From New York. And who have the brilliant studio suits set their sights [...]

Director Len Wiseman is in pretty high demand, with a string of hits to his credit. To my knowledge, I don’t think he’s had a box office stinker yet. From the “Underworld” movies straight to the recent “Die Hard” sequel. And now it appears as if the studios have confirmed Wiseman to make over John Carpenter’s sci-fi actioner “Escape from New York”, as has been previously reported here and elsewhere. Meanwhile, “Mummy” director Stephen Sommers has apparently walked on talks to direct “G.I. Joe”, with the main sticking point being about $10 million — the amount Sommers wanted to do “Joe”, and the amount the studio was not willing to shell out.
About Wiseman and “Escape” (from Variety via):
The New Line movie seeks to revamp John Carpenter’s 1981 original, in which Snake Plissken (bow down before Kurt Russell), an eye-patched war hero/convict, is sent into Manhattan, now a maximum security prison rather than Starbucks breeding ground, to rescue the US President [...]

The fine folks over at IESB has your update on two hot movie properties currently on New Line Cinema’s slate, with both gearing for a 2009 release. The first is the remake of John Carpenter’s “Escape From New York”, set to star Gerard Butler as the infamous one-eyed survivalist Snake Plissken. According to IESB, the screenplay for the “Escape” remake, by Ken Nolan, is done, and the man who will be in the director’s chair will be no other than … Len Wiseman?
Yes, Len Wiseman, who is coming off “Live Free or Die Hard”, and otherwise known as Mr. Kate Beckinsale. (Because, you know, he’s married to her.)
So what about the “Gears of War” movie? According to IESB, the script, by Stuart Beattie, is also done, and the man in the director’s chair will be …
… Len Wiseman.
What? No, that’s not a typo. One of IESB’s “reliable studio insider” has told them that Wiseman is currently in talks to develop [...]
