Twenty years after their heyday, ninja movies are all the rage again in Hollywood. As someone who grew up with movies pitting ninjas fighting Caucasian gangsters in broad daylight, I couldn’t be happier. Don’t get me wrong: James McTeigue’s “Ninja Assassin” is definitely not a throwback to the ‘80s, back when Sho Kosugi ruled the ninja roost with honor. Despite the presence of fan favorite Kosugi in “Assassin” – surely a nod to the man’s many accomplishments and contributions to the genre – “Ninja Assassin” couldn’t have existed in the ‘80s. This is very much a 2009 ninja movie, the kind that relies almost as much on CGI blood as it does the amazingly acrobatic skills of its leading man and his enemies.
“Ninja Assassin” opens with a ninja from the Ozunu clan taking out a room full of Japanese gangsters (fronted by the always amusing Sung Kang, here playing the epitome of a 2009 Yakuza). Immediately, the film establishes itself [...]

Let’s face it, every year there’s only a handful of movies that everyone who dares call himself a fanboy is dying to see. 2010 is no exception, with titles like “Iron Man 2″, “Prince of Persia”, and “Jonah Hex” on the slate, to name just three. Here is our extremely early preview of the 10 movies you should be keeping an eye on and we’ll be following very closely ahead of their Summer 2010 launch. Some are more fanboyish than others, but they’re all definitely intriguing.
10. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (June 30)

The “Twilight” franchise? No interest whatsoever. David Slade directing another vampire movie? Oh hell yeah. As if Summit Entertainment’s “Twilight” franchise needed new injections of blood into its already impressive fanbase, the third part in the series, “Eclipse” got it anyway when the producers hired David Slade (”30 Days of Night”) to take a stab at darkening up the teen angst vampire series. Of course, it remains to be [...]

I was reading an article in “Empire Magazine” which mentioned that Nathan Fillion makes every film he’s in at least 25% better. This got me thinking, who else makes films more watchable even if the movies are terrible to begin with? So I compiled a list (in no particular order), of those actors and actresses who whether it’s through enthusiasm, comedy value or just sheer presence, make whatever film they’re in just that little bit more exciting. Feel free to disagree with my opinions below.
1. Mark Dacascos
Ignoring AMAZING films like “Drive” and “Brotherhood of the Wolf”, and pretty good films like “Only the Strong”, Mark Dacascos has been in some shit.
No matter though, because the mere fact that any of these turds stars Dacascos causes them to be polished to a degree only some sort of industrial buffer could achieve. Yes, Mark Dacascos is the heavy duty shit-buffer of STV action movies. [...]

Give them all the credit in the world: the legion of Twilighters that blanketed mall theaters across the country did their best, but when the dust cleared, the power of squealing teenage girls couldn’t quite trump the commitment of America’s fanboys. While Summit’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” took a healthy bite out of the box office, culminating in a $140 million chunk over the weekend according to studio estimates, it wasn’t nearly enough to overthrow the reigning champ, Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”, which opened with $158.4 million a year ago.
In all-time 3-day openings, “The Dark Knight” remains king, while Sam Raimi’s “Spider-man 3″ remains second with $151 million, with “New Moon’s” $140 good enough for third place. Though it didn’t top previous movies in the States, “New Moon” was dominant overseas, putting its worldwide total for its first week of release at $258.8 million. “New Moon” also easily bested “Twilight”, the first movie in the franchise, which [...]

The midnight showing was sold out and electricity rocketed through the air from the excitement. It was as if a viewer was attending a midnight mass for a Goth Christmas, and when everyone got home, Edward and Jacob would have visited and left presents under the posters bearing their likeness. BOOYAH!! Everyone at Hot Topics is gettin’ laid tonight!
The amazingly rampant popularity of the “Twilight Saga” more or less makes the plot summary of this review obsolete. But for those who have lived in blissful ignorance, here is the obligatory recap.
Fearing he’s become a danger to Bella, Edward dumps her and decides he can’t live without her. So he travels to Italy to see the Volturi, the powerful vampire ruling class. He’s got a bizarre suicide plan where he’s hoping the Volturi will put an end to him once and far all. Bella meanwhile, occupies her spare time by becoming a daredevil adrenaline junkie. During this trying period [...]

For those who are interested in such things, John Woo’s martial arts epic “Red Cliff” (formerly “The Battle of Red Cliff”) opened in limited release in the States yesterday. Granted, the perfect timing for this post would have been yesterday, but hey, better late than never, right? In case you were still wondering what the movie is about, or if you should go see it, here’s a question: Do you like epic battle scenes? If the answer is Yes, then you should go see it. The film is a bit long, even at its current edited length of 2 hrs. 28 minutes. Trust me, that’s about 1 hour and 30 minutes shorter than the original Asian version, which clocked in at over 4 hours. Check out some battle scene clips from the movie below. Also added, the English trailer.
The film stars Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Shido Nakamura, and is directed by John Wo. It’s [...]

In which case, you’re probably reading the wrong site, because if you can’t get psyched for a movie like “Ninja Assassin”, you probably should be reading, oh I don’t know, the New York Times’s Style Section or something equally pretentious. Starring Sung Kang, Randall Duk Kim, Ben Miles, Naomie Harris, Rain, and the legendary Sho Kosugi, “Ninja Assassin” opens next week, November 25.

Who says there’s no profit in blowing up the world a billion times over? Don’t tell Roland Emmerich that. The German director has blown up, imperiled, or invaded the Planet Earth at least a half dozen times in his career, and his latest, the mother of all disaster epics “2012″ crashed, demolished, and mass murdered the global population on its way to a $65 million domestic box office debut (and $225 million worldwide). Set in the year 2012, when it is believed that the Mayan Calender will predict the end of the world, the $200 million dollar movie stars John Cusack as an Everyman turned superhero who somehow always manages to survive one mega disaster after another. Danny Glover plays the President who is, no doubt, too old for this shit.
Last week’s #1, the Jim Carrey animated “A Christmas Carol” humbugged its way to second place with another $22 million, giving it a two-week total of $63 million. Considering the [...]

The “Kick-Ass” official site says this teaser trailer isn’t set to debut until 3 days from now on Myspace, but this vid that’s already up at Myspace’s Trailer Park says differently. It’s a short teaser, and pretty much what you already saw in the Comic Con bootleg versions, though without the profanity and bloodletting. It’s mildly kick ass, but I suppose that’s to be expected given that this is the filmmaker’s first real introduction of the movie to the masses. They can’t exactly go full-bore with a foul-mouthed Hit-Girl now, can they? I suspect that’s coming later in the form of a Red Band trailer, though. Really, you can’t hide the fact that this is one vulgar movie, with much of the vulgarity coming out of the mouth of a tweener.

That much is clear from this one-minute teaser trailer for Frenchman Louis Leterrier’s “Clash of the Titans” remake via Yahoo! For one, there’s that whole pounding rock music soundtrack. I don’t think they had that “back in the day”, but maybe I’m wrong. What am I, a historian? Let’s face it, it’s what you would expect from Leterrier — a loud, fast-paced, and contemporary take on an old story. Is it going to get you interested in Greek history? Probably not. Is it going to get you running out of the theaters trying to stab each other with your straws? Probably.

If you’re a fan of writer-director Richard Kelly, or even just mildly interested in his career, the trailers for “The Box” might convince you it’s the kind of movie everyone was waiting for him to make. After two confusing and overindulgent films (cult favorite “Donnie Darko”, and the not-so-cult favorite “Southland Tales”), “The Box” promised to be a smart, simple, taut thriller that wouldn’t take an advanced degree to fully comprehend.
Unfortunately, it’s really just another trademark Richard Kelly film, drowning in oblique excess. Kelly has turned a simple premise into a wild conspiracy yarn involving the Viking Mars mission, sinister public libraries, the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, mysterious nose bleeds, amputated toes, and towering blocks of CGI Jell-O that allow you to briefly pass through the afterlife. It’s almost as hilariously muddled as “Southland Tales”, with the key difference being that “Southland Tales” was trying to be funny.
In “The Box”, James Marsden and Cameron Diaz are a hardworking couple [...]

Who says you can’t have Christmas in November? Not Jim Carrey and director Robert Zemeckis. The duo’s CG take on the timeless “A Christmas Carol” took the top spot at the box office in its debut, knocking last week’s champ, Michael Jackson’s “This is it” of its perch to second place. “Carol” took in $31 million in its debut, good enough for first place, but not quite as spectacular as expected, given the film’s whopping $200 million budget. “This is It”, which is composed entirely of rehearsal footage starring the late Michael Jackson as he prepared for his would-be comeback concert tour, managed to hold onto second place with another $14 million, giving it a two-week domestic total of $57.8 million.
The landmark Korean ghost series “Whispering Corridors” returns for its fifth instalment with “A Blood Pledge”, marking the debut of director Lee Jong Yong, an interesting choice for the helm, given his previous work under Park Chan Wook on the likes of “JSA” and “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”. The film continues very much in the tradition of its predecessors, being set at an all-girls school, dealing with contemporary themes and concerns of friendship, and of course presenting a new set of up and coming young actresses no doubt hoping to follow in the footsteps of former “Whispering” alumni Kim Min Sun, Kim Ok Bin, Kim Kyu Ri, Seo Ji Hye, and Choi Kang Hee. Interestingly, the film not only performed well at the domestic box office, but is the first of its brethren to have been mooted for a possible Hollywood remake.
The plot begins in suitably morbid fashion, as a young girl called Eon Joo (Jang Kyeong Ah) throws [...]

You can’t blame the Thais for continuing to produce action movies like “Raging Phoenix”. There are basically only two genres coming out of Thailand that sells nowadays – martial arts movies and horror films. Everything else just doesn’t translate very well. One of the industry’s newest import is female ass kicking wonder Jeeja Yanin, who burst onto the scene last year with “Chocolate”, directed by “Ong Bak” head honcho Prachya Pinkaew. The film benefited greatly from Yanin’s unassuming features. For “Raging Phoenix”, we already know the deal, so director Rashane Limtrakul and action choreographer Panna Rittikrai (another “Ong Bak” vet) had to throw us a twist – a new form of martial arts that combines Muay Thai with breakdancing. Or at least, that’s the idea.
The plot for “Raging Phoenix” is as superfluous as they come – neglected rich girl Deu (Yanin) spends her time playing (badly, I might add) drums for a pop band, when she’s nearly abducted one day [...]

I gotta admit, this Russian trailer (and Russian dubbed) teaser trailer just released by Yahoo! Movies for Angelina Jolie’s CIA spy thriller “Salt” is looking pretty sweet. I’m not a big fan of the outrageous action stunts that are featured in the trailer (give me down-and-gritty any day), but Jolie looks like she’s perfectly at home as an experienced covert spy.
The plot of “Salt” has Jolie being framed as a Russian sleeper spy who is on the homeland to do bad things. This results in her having to flee the CIA building and Liev Schreiber. She then has to figure out who framed her, and for what purpose. This, apparently, involves getting to the President of the United States and dying her hair black. She actually looks much hotter as a brunette, but that’s neither here nor there.
Co-starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Andre Braugher. Phillip Noyce directs.
Taste the salt July 23, 2010.

The trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which aired on UK’s GMTV, is now up on Youtube, and if you ever wanted to know how many different sand effects can be fit into one movie, then you can find out below. It certainly looks a lot like a videogame in that it’s really overproduced and exciting, and at the very least it should be beautiful to look at. I’m talking about the effects, not shirtless Jake Gyllenhaal, who still doesn’t look Persian (personally, I thought that Faran Tahir would be great for the role, but he has no star power, and perhaps he’s too old for the part required).
(Swapped the trailer with the one that premiered on IGN. – Nix)

In a week without any other major studio competition, the Michael Jackson concert (rehearsal) movie “This is It” opened with $101 million worldwide, including $32 million in domestic ticket sales over a 5-day period, according to studio estimates. That’s good, but it’s nowhere as good as studio insiders had been predicting just a week ago. The domestic take, in particular, is disappointing, given that industry predictions had it in the $50-$60 million dollar range, and some brave (moronic?) Sony suit was reported to be predicting a $250 million take in the film’s first 5-days. A tad too ambitious, as it now turns out.
The concert film was stitched together from raw rehearsal footage starring Jackson as he prepared to launch a worldwide tour, which never happened when the pop singer suddenly died from a heart attack four months ago. In all, the footage and film rights cost Sony $60 million, an investment that would appear to have paid off, if [...]

Just in time for Halloween, Palisades Tartan has grouped together three of the most successful Asian horror films of recent years in one region 2 DVD collection. Although terms such as ‘essential’ are woefully overused when it comes to such compilations, in this case it certainly rings true, as the three titles are arguably among the most important and influential examples of the modern Asian genre – not least since two of them have been the subject of markedly less successful Hollywood remakes. The films in question, “Audition”, “Dark Water” and “The Eye” also provide a showcase for three highly acclaimed directors in the ever prolific Takashi Miike (still best known in the West for his infamous “Ichi the Killer”), The Pang Brothers (who recently headed for the US themselves with “The Messengers” and a remake of their own “Bangkok Dangerous”) and Hideo Nakata, whose “Ringu” launched the new wave of Eastern horror.
First up is Miike’s “Audition” which, simply [...]

The buzz surrounding writer/director Oren Peli’s popular 2007 “found footage” horror outing “Paranormal Activity,” has been, in a word, astronomical. In addition to the countless testimonials I’ve read on message boards and entertainment websites alike, scores of people from all walks of life have told me how brutally intense and genuinely frightening this film is, which may help to explain my reluctance to experience it for myself. Truth be told, my stance on public opinion isn’t what you’d call positive, especially when it comes to mainstream American horror. I believe the word I’m looking for is “jaded,” though I’m sure others would probably call it “unchecked film geek snobbery.”
Simply put, “Paranormal Activity” just isn’t that scary. Unnerving and a little eerie, yes, but definitely not scary. It’s kind of like the television series “Ghost Hunters” without the remote possibility that these supposed supernatural events are, in fact, the real deal. Take reality out of the equation and all you’ve [...]
