Scott Mann’s “The Tournament” reminds me a lot of those drive-by action films from the ’80s and ’90s, where the story is really just a flimsy excuse to throw an endless barrage of action sequences at the audience and, in general, blow shit up. Hey, not that that’s a bad thing. Word from THR is that Mann’s “The Tournament” will open the Screamfest Horror Film Festival, though I’m not sure it exactly qualifies as horror, but eh, genre lines, who cares anymore, right?
The film, which was finished a while ago, since I’ve been keeping track of it for the last few years, doesn’t currently have a North American distributor, and the hope is that the film’s premiere at Screamfest will elicit an offer to distribute. The filmmakers are hoping for a “Kick Ass” effect, where the Matthew Vaughn film, which was without a distributor due to its controversial content, made a huge splash at Comic Con earlier this year, resulting [...]

Let’s face it, almost no one who doesn’t work in Hollywood or dreams of working in Hollywood watches the Oscars telecast anymore. They’re too bland, too insipid, too wordy, too dancy, and just plan too long. Not all that long ago, the people at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded the number of nominees in the Best Pictures category from the usual 5 to 10, in hopes that one of your movies will be nominated and you’ll tune in to sit through the 10 hours to see if your favoritest movie in the whole wide world (for that year, anyway) has won. The latest rule change? Something called preferential voting.
If you were an Oscar voter, instead of simply casting your ballot for the movie you think should win, you will now have to list all 10 movies in order of preference from 1 to 10. As a result, this doesn’t guarantee that the movie with the most [...]

Wow, they’re still doing the Emmys? Maybe it’s just me, but it’s been ages since I’ve paid attention to this thing. Then again, I don’t pay any attention to the Oscars, either. I just don’t care who wins. The movies I like never win, or are even nominated, so what’s the impetus to spend three (or in most cases, four) long, torturous hours watching a bunch of celebrities give each other reach arounds? There are a couple of shows I watch regularly that get nominated for the Emmy every year, but that usually begins and ends with Fox’s House. Also, are you kidding me? Yet another round of nominations for Charlie Sheen and the so-unfunny-it’s-not-even-funny Two and a Half Men? Whatever, Hollywood.
The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards will be televised live on September 20, 2009 on CBS, with this year’s host Neil Patrick Harris.

Looking for some doses of action, sex and Gladiator combat? Well you’re in luck, buckaroos, because that’s what the new Starz TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand seems to be promising in spades. Just got a press release from Starz that says they will be holding a panel at this year’s Comic Con on Friday July 24th, and that the stars (Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah, and Andy Whitfield aka Spartacus himself) will be on hand along with producers Rob Tapert and Steven S. DeKnight.
The world of gladiators comes to life as the Roman Republic’s most brutal fighters clash in the ultimate arena. “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” is an entirely new vision of the ancient legend and will utilize virtual environments giving it a unique graphic novel look and style, along with a fresh narrative approach. Debuting exclusively on Starz, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” in January 2010 is produced by Starz Media with Executive Producers Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi and Joshua [...]

In a move designed to boost ratings and trick — er, I mean, convince your Everyday Joe to tune in, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (aka the Oscars people) have decided to expand the Best Picture category nominees from the usual five to ten nominees starting in 2010. As justification, they point to 1939, when there were 10 Best Picture nominees, including classics like “Gone With the Wind”, “Stagecoach”, and “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”.
But hey, don’t let me spoil it. Here’s what the Oscars people said (via THR):
“Suppose you had to narrow that field down to five nominees? Which of these films would you keep? Whichever five movies you selected, you’d be losing five extraordinary films,” [Academy president Sid Ganis] asked rhetorically.
Yeah, and suppose you cut out the 20-minute each dance numbers, the 50 or so honorary Oscars you give out every year to old and decaying people you couldn’t be bothered to give Oscars to [...]

When compiling a Best of Film list, it’s always difficult to remember the ones that came at the beginning of the year. Learning from past mistakes, I kept a list of every film I saw in 2008, noting the ones that had an impact. All of the ones listed are either four or five star films, and are in no particular order. Since the Oscars are quickly approaching – tune in Feb. 22 – I indicated which ones were nominees.

“Cloverfield”
– A genuine “experience” film about New York City under attack. J.J. Abrams conceived of this after a trip to Japan, and it was his attempt at an American “Gojira.” It worked for me. I recently rewatched it on DVD, and even though I knew what was going to happen, I still enjoyed it. My experience was enhanced by watching the DVD extras.

“Iron Man”
– The only summer blockbuster that delivered. Excellent special effects, delirious action sequences, and [...]

They’re all nominees for Best Performance by an actor in a leading role at the 2008 Oscars shindig, officially known as the 81st Annual Academy Awards. I could go on about how no one watches the Oscars anymore, and how most people have not seen 95% of the movies that are nominated each year, and every year the discrepancy between the nominated films and its audience seems to widen, but what’s the point, really? I just woke up, and I feel a headache coming on. So, without further delay, here are your nominees for the 2008 Oscars. Who will win? Who will lose? Fact is, every Hollywood producer, writer, director, and actor wants to win a Golden Globe, but everyone also realizes it’s all one big joke. Really, who can take the Emmys seriously when a piece of smoldering turd like Two and a Half Men gets nominated multiple times in major categories? But I digress.
Canuck funnyman Mike Myers (pictured, left) has landed the gig to host the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, Myers’ second go-around at the mostly pointless awards show. It used to be that no one showed up at the MTV Movie Awards unless the producers had told them they had already won beforehand, but not so much nowadays. The Awards show has become a social event, and you now came anyway, even if you weren’t guaranteed a Moonman, or whatever it is they give away at these things. No doubt Myers return from obscurity is to coincide with his “The Love Guru”, his first actual movie role (not counting animation) since 2003’s “The Cat in the Hat”.
Yahoo! News says the Awards show will air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California on June 1st, 2008. Categories to look forward to include Best Kiss, Best Dance, Best Lowrider Shorts, Best George Lopez Moments, and of course, everyone’s favorite, Best Idiotic MTV [...]

It’s official: most of America kinda don’t really give a friggin’ damn about the Oscars. Then again, when you give a statuette to “The Golden Compass” for best special effects over “Transformers”, you sorta deserve it, don’t you? According to Nielsens, the 2008 Oscars was the lowest rated Oscars telecast in Oscars history, even beating out the 2003 ratings by 1 million less viewer.
More:
For whatever reason, this year’s Oscars repelled viewers as it went on. What began as a show that averaged 32.3 million viewers in its first half-hour, devolved into a show that averaged 25.4 million in its final half-hour of prime time.
Stewart, who previously presided over the 2006 Oscars, now goes down as the host of two of the three lowest rated Academy Awards in TV history. And in defense of Steve Martin, who hosted the 2003 misfire, that ceremony competed for attention with the start of the Iraq War. Stewart, thusly, stands alone as the lowest-rated host [...]

You hear that? That’s the sound of 99% of America not giving a damn. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s come to my attention that the Golden Globes may not be broadcast on TV this year because of the Writer’s Strike, which has spurred the Screen Actors Guild to show fellowship by banning members from attending the awards show. If it’s televised on TV as scheduled on January 13th, 2008, that is, and so now the Golden Globes is trying to convince NBC to pull the plug on the show so they can get their stars to attend because, let’s face it, wasn’t that the whole reason they created the Globes in the first place?
More:
The HFPA, whose 100-odd members determine the awards each year, is pushing NBC to pull the plug on the broadcast because that will prompt the WGA to lift its pickets and enable stars to attend the Jan. 13 event. On Friday, SAG said its members would not [...]
