If Bill Gates and company over at Microsoft are smart, they’ll look at what Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp managed with the $30 million dollar “District 9″ and immediately greenlight a “Halo” movie, complete with north of $100 million dollar budget. The Jackson-produced and Blomkamp-directed “District 9″, the duo’s collaboration after the “Halo” movie fell through, touched down at first place over the box office weekend, taking in an impressive $37 million, according to studio estimates. Not bad for a movie with no stars, though the fact that the film sold Jackson’s name like he was the director probably helped. The film, made for a reported $30 million, chronicles the existence of aliens who are kept apart from humans, feared, and exploited after arriving in South Africa. Sound familiar?
The week’s other big opening film, the time traveling romance “The Time Traveler’s Wife” opened at third place with a solid $19 million. Last weekend’s #1, “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” fell [...]

Proving that they don’t need no stinkin’ critics to review their movie, Paramount and Hasbro’s latest toyline movie invasion, “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” came up tops at the box office over the weekend with a solid $56 million dollar opening in domestic ticket sales. The film also scooped up an additional $44 million in overseas tickets, giving it a $100 million haul in its debut week, according to studio estimates.
Although “Rise of Cobra’s” $56 million is solid, the film’s second week will determine if it’s a hit or a miss, given the movie’s staggering $175 million budget, not including advertising costs. At this rate, the movie would have to continually maintain its ticket sales just to break even. That doesn’t seem very likely, given the movie’s poor reviews and generally average word of mouth. Basically, if you wanted to see “G.I. Joe”, you probably saw it over the weekend. Expect the numbers to plummet in week two.

When Sienna Miller is the best actor in your movie, you’ve got issues, and Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” has issues. Based on the Hasbro toy line of the same name, the live-action “Joe” is about an international military commando unit led by General hawk (Dennis Quaid), whose mission is to, well, stop bad guys, I suppose. We never really learn all that much about the Joes, or their mission charter, except they’ve apparently been around for a while and operate out of an Egyptian base called The Pit. They’re also heavily armed with the latest and greatest (and in some cases, ridiculously high-tech) weaponry and vehicles. Unfortunately for them, so are their foes.
“Rise of Cobra” opens with weapons designer McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) introducing his new fancy nanomite warhead technology to NATO, the organization that has been funding his research. As McCullen prepares to deliver the warheads to NATO, tough guy soldiers Duke (Channing Tatum) and his [...]

Sorry, all you mainstream critics out there. You know who you are, you and your free movie passes and wine tasting on weekends and whatnot. Yeah, you. Paramount has decided not to give you a free screening of their movie, the last big-budget action film of the Summer, “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra”. Of course just because Paramount has decided to ditch its usual press screenings for “Joe”, that doesn’t mean the $175 million dollar film completely went unreviewed. The studio has given selected fanboy sites a look at their movie, and whoever did the choosing must be pretty smart, because said fanboy sites have given it positive reviews.
Obviously we’re not one of the sites given the screening, since we’re not smart enough and I’m sure the fact that I would have shown up in my boxers doesn’t help. But I ain’t mad. I still got your back, Paramount. Just, you know, stop calling me, it’s getting weird.

That’s right, kids, pretty soon you’ll be able to prove to people that you were right along, it’s the best movie ever made. Either that, or you’ll be able to prove to people that it’s the worst movie ever made. Either way, you’ll be able to prove it come August 7. Until then, here are four fresh clips from the movie.
BTW: I know that Byung-hun Lee supposedly has a flawless English accent, but why does it always sound like they’re dubbing his lines…?

Joe: Rise of Cobra” (he’s the big black dude with the big machine gun in all the trailers) tells MTV that he has been talking with Marvel Studios about playing Black Panther in a live-action movie. The role has been previously attached to a number of black actors in Hollywood, most notably Wesley Snipes from a few years back, but this is the first time the former Lost star’s name has been attached.
Adewale tells MTV:
“We’re talking to Marvel about ‘Black Panther’. This is the first round, so you know, hopefully they’ll look at ‘G.I. Joe’ and see the potential. I mean, sure, Ray Parks, who plays Snake Eyes in the movie, is a pretty impressive dude with all the things he can do with his body, but this is a tad ridiculous. But hey, don’t take my word for it. Check out the clip below for yourself. And is it me, or is Byung-hun Lee’s English a lot better than I thought it would be?
Three reviews for Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” have popped up online this Wednesday morning. Apparently Paramount decided to do a little advance screening of their little indie movie in Kansas City, of all places, and as expected, the reviews flooded in. Well, okay, three review came in to two different sites, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that the two reviews over at AICN are real, while the third one, over at Latino Review, reeks of bullshit plant.
The two over at AICN are not sold on the quality of the movie, but seem to admit that it’s not nearly as atrocious as they had expected. Not great, mind you, but there are actually some great action sequences that clearly cost a lot of money, and it’s agreed that every scene with Snake Eyes is uber badass. Although the reviewers seem confused as to why Snake Eyes’ mask-costume thingie had a mouth, as, [...]

Let’s face it, if nothing else, just seeing Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow finally being realized on the big screen and going sword-to-sword will be worth taking a trip to Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra”. And if there’s more than that? Okay, that’s just gravy. Then again, Sommers could really screw us over by cheaping out on the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow stuff and spending too much time with Duke and his wise-cracking sidekick. That would just really suck, but man, the trailers sure seem to indicate that, though. Hope springs eternal, I suppose. Anyways, two new, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow-centric posters for the movie below.
G.I. Joe is a highly trained, classified Special Operations Unit composed of men and woman from around the globe. Officially, these warriors don’t even exist. Few know the truth – that G.I. Plus, more soldiers wearing those black molded costumes cause apparently they’re way too cool and badass for, you know, silly fatigues. Check out a new batch of “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” images below, just in time for the Joe’s arrival next month.
G.I. Joe is a highly trained, classified Special Operations Unit composed of men and woman from around the globe. Officially, these warriors don’t even exist. Few know the truth – that G.I. Joe fights a secret war, as the first and last line of defence against forces that seek to plunge our world into chaos. Wherever there’s trouble, G.I. Joe is there!

Still haven’t decided whether Stephen Sommer’s “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” is your cup of tea or not? Well you best get deciding soon, buckaroos, because the film opens August 7. Which, I guess, is still a long ways off, so forget what I just said. Procrastinate away. Anyhoo, here’s the latest TV spot for the movie, which features lots of old footage, some new footage, and a scene where Scarlett is staring at Duke and Ripcord’s apparently naked buttocks and looking impressed. Oooh, for the ladies! Ahem.
An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer.
Starring Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Byung-hun Lee, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Jonathan Pryce, Saïd Taghmaoui, Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, Karolina Kurkova, Ray Park, and Arnold Vosloo. Directed by Stephen Sommers (”The Mummy”).

If you’ve been keeping track of Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra”, then you know that the Cobra terrorist organization isn’t the up-front-and-center villains of the movie. Instead, the villains are led by Christopher Eccleston’s Destro, who is seeking a personal vendetta against the world by, apparently, blowing stuff up real good and often. You know, one of those things. Anyways, here’s a Japanese trailer that actually features, for the first time, The Doctor character played by young Mister Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It comes early, and it’s only a second long. The rest of the trailer you can skip, it’s all the same stuff you’ve seen before.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW
…..
…..
…..
For those who don’t know, the Doctor eventually becomes Cobra Commander, who, we’re told, takes charge of the bad guy duties by the end of the film and paving the way for a sequel where Cobra is the primary threat.
Starring Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Byung-hun Lee, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, [...]

You know, I’m not the biggest fan or reader or watcher of “G.I. Joe” out there, but I always thought ol Snake Eyes and Scarlett were an item? Or was I wrong? I know that Warren Ellis sort of stuck it to Snake Eyes in his recent Cartoon Network “G.I. Joe: Resolute” movie, basically having Scarlett pick Duke over Snake Eyes, and it looks like the same will happen with Stephen Sommers’ movie version, only it may not be Duke who Scarlett picks, but, er, possibly Marlon Wayans’ Ripcord? Say it ain’t so, Joes!
All of this comes to you courtesy of a very lengthy review of the movie’s novelization over at Generals Joes.
In short, instead of Scarlett and Snake Eyes possibly hooking up, Scarlett (a Canadian, apparently) will look at Snake Eyes as no more than a “brother”. Meanwhile, Ripcord (Wayans) will have a thing for Scarlett, and apparently talks about it quite often. From the trailers, you did [...]

Okay, so maybe I added the “kinda dumb” part, but have you seen the trailers for this thing? Sheesh. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Cobra Commander in the movie, says Stephen Sommers’ much-maligned “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” has nothing to do with reality, and that it’s all about archetypes. I think that’s movie parlance for, “Hey, you gotta pay the bills, right?” And yes, today is a slow news day. Anyways, that bit of non-news news is brought to you from the folks at ScifiWire.
Below is the latest poster featuring Rachel Nichols as Scarlett. Haven’t seen or heard much from Scarlett, which is a surprise, as I thought she was the female lead in the movie. If the trailers are any indication, I don’t think she does a whole lot in the entire movie except scream at monitors and look horrified at having to act next to Marlon Wayans. Can’t blame the girl. Those Wayans boys can be pretty [...]

Here’s a possible sign of (non) box office clout for Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra”: I saw “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” with my nephews, and when the “G.I. Joe” trailer played, they barely batted an eye. In comparison, they were incredibly excited for Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender”. A sign of future box office muscle for the Night one, but not so much for the Joes? Probably not, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Well, at least to me, and isn’t that what matters? In any case, the main draw of the “Joes” seems to be grown ups who grew up with the show, because kids nowadays don’t even know what it’s about. The impetus for the movie is, without a doubt, the wild success of the “Transformers” franchise, but perhaps Paramount is over-estimating the popularity of the Joes in comparison to giant effin’ robots. Time will tell. Until then, two new pics from the movie below.

So here’s the latest trailer for Stephen Sommers’ much-maligned, much-discussed “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra”, which apparently has been cut to sell the lighter side of being a Joe. You know, the lighter side of guys running around in metal suits dodging missiles fired from sports cars. Yeah, anyways, remember when Marlon Wayans said in interviews that his character Ripcord wasn’t going to be the film’s comedy relief? Er, I think Marlon lied. Check out the latest trailer for “Rise of Cobra”. Snake Eyes still looks like the only decent thing about this entire movie, and he’s not even the male lead as far as I can tell. It’s all about Dukey and his buddy Rippy, because obviously the blood feud between two super badass ninjas isn’t enough to build an entire movie around. Ahem.

So what are the chances that Marlon Wayans’ character Ripcord will, at one point or another in Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” utter the line, “Now that’s what I’m talking about?” Probably while holding up a BFG? Cause, you know, that’s almost a Movie Law or something when you have sassy black characters in an action movie. Just wondering. Anyways, here are four new character posters from Sommers’ upcoming “G.I. Joe”, featuring Ripcord, Duke, Baroness, Snake Eyes, and Storm Shadow. As per their usual gag, Paramount Pictures sent each “exclusive” poster to different movie sites. We didn’t get one, of course, probably because our readers don’t speak good English so good and are currently logged on from public libraries, at least when they’re not serving jail time for being too awesome.
