Adapted from the famous T-shirt, “Che” is director Steven Soderbergh’s massively long, two part movie about professional revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara. A much more covert revolutionary himself, Soderbergh has shrewdly designed his career around the Scorsese Model of “one for them, one for me”. So an “Oceans” caper with George Clooney will be alternated with something more experimental like “Bubble” or “Full Frontal”. This one is definitely FOR Soderbergh, questionably for me, and probably NOT for most audiences. At least not those seeking the cinematic equivalent of light reading.
“Che” tries to transcend its genre but it’s still clearly a biopic. The main problem of biopics is that a film cannot easily present the totality of a person in such a brief running time. Che Guevara presents an even larger problem as he’s become less of a human being in the passing years than a marketable symbol. It’s a great irony that this communist revolutionary would end up being swallowed up [...]

Finding a pimply-faced kid on a college campus wearing a Che T-shirt is like looking for bread crumbs at Rosie O’Donnell’s house. It ain’t much of a challenge. Now that idiot buddy of yours who wears the Che shirt may or may not know anything about the guy whose face is on said T-shirt, but that probably shouldn’t stop you from pointing at him, at his shirt, and then laughing in his face the next time you see him. When he asks you why you’re laughing, just tell him, “Dude, are you like in love with Benicio Del Toro or something?” Trust me, much hilarity will ensue.
Anyhoo. Here’s a poster for “Guerrilla”, the Che Guevara biopic from Steven Soderbergh, and starring Benicio Del Toro as the revolutionary. It also co-stars Benjamin Bratt, Franka Potente, and a guitar-slinging Lou Diamond Phillips. Probably.

The AP reports that Benicio del Toro has signed on to play the lead in Steven Soderbergh’s “Guerilla”, and in fact this is kind of old news, because if you go to del Toro’s official site, he’s already in full Che costume and, one presumes, on the set of the movie. So who is Che? His full name is Ernesto “Che” Guevara, and he’s the guy pictured to the left. Yes, the dude with the funky hair whose face you see all those rich white kids on your college campus wearing around on a T-shirt, as if that said anything about them, the chumps.
The film will also co-star Javier Bardem, Ryan Gosling, Benjamin Bratt, Franka Potente, and “Guerilla” is apparently just the working title. According to del Toro’s site, the film (to be shot entirely in Spanish) is also called “The Front Man”, and is apparently meant to be split into two movies, both written and directed by Steven Soderbergh.
