Truth be told, I will be very, very surprised if this “Hellraiser” remake ever gets off the ground. Every other day I’m hearing war stories from deep within the production, ranging from a host of talented directors jumping ship to gross interference from the knuckleheads at the Weinstein Company. There’s even a rumor floating around out there that the film will be shot in 3D, though I’m hoping this is nothing more than baseless Internet speculation. Despite all of these unsightly blemishes, Horror-Movies.ca is reporting that there’s an official synopsis currently in circulation. The words and phrases, of course, are subject to change.
Here’s what the producers are officially pimping:
The re-telling of Clive Barker’s classic horror masterpiece. Based on Barker’s critically acclaimed novella “The Hellbound Heart,”Hellraiser tells the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. Having lost his earthly body to a trio of forsaken demons – lead by one of [...]

Variety currently has an article about upcoming film projects by Bob Weinstein’s Dimensions Films, and aside from listing all the movies Dimensions want to remake or do a sequel to (all or most of them in 3D, since ol Bob ain’t nothing if he ain’t trendy), they also mention that “Scream 4″ is set to shoot in April or May, and that the studio is trying to get Wes Craven to come back. Then they add this line to the “Scream” passage:
Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette will star.
That, of course, goes against everything we’ve reported and heard since we knew a new “Scream” trilogy was in the works. So, has Neve Campbell changed her mind and agreed to come back, or did Variety simply copy/paste the names of the stars? We’ll probably know by tomorrow, I would imagine, when either corrections are put out or Campbell’s return is confirmed.
In the article, “Halloween 3″ in 3D for October 2010 [...]

At the rate the “Hellraiser” remake is hiring and losing directors during development, they mind as well hire one of the guys who directed the 30 or so direct-to-DVD “Hellraiser” sequels to do it. According to the blokes at Bloody-Disgusting, the remake’s latest attached director, Frenchie Pascal Laugier (who directed the cult hit “Martyrs”) has left the project. This, apparently, is coming from Clive Barker himself via the ever-popular Twitter.
Says BD:
According to this Twitter account claiming to be the “real” Clive Barker, French director Pascal Laugier “is regrettably no longer on the Hellraiser remake.” This confirms reports that we’ve been hearing that Dimension Films was actively seeking a new writer.
Okay, not nearly as concrete as we would have expected from the guys at BD, who are usually very “in” on these horror movie news stuff. So, chalk this one up as “rumor”.
Anyways, if it is true, how about getting that Rick Bota guy? He’s already directed three “Hellraiser” straight-to-DVD movies, [...]

The producers of the “Hellraiser” remake tried it with two Frenchies (”Inside’s” Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo), and when that didn’t work, they temporarily gave two Yankees a shot (”Feast’s” Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton). And when that didn’t work out either, they’ve gone back to another Frenchie, this time “Martyrs” writer/director Pascal Laugier, who is currently in negotiations to write and helm the remake of Clive Barker’s tale about acupuncture needles gone awry, or as the kids call it, “Hellraiser”. And Laugier seems enthusiastic about it, too. Plus, Clive Barker has already given his blessing to the project, so what’s there to bitch about?
Says Laugier about the opportunity to bring his brand of mayhem overseas to Lalaland:
“This is a dream project for me,” Laugier said. “I know Clive Barker’s work very well, and I would never betray what he has done. Fans are expecting a definitive ‘Hellraiser,’ and I don’t want to take that away from them.”

It looks like the French duo of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (pictured, left) have walked off the remake of Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser”, or at least according to horror-movies.ca. Why? No one knows. This has yet to be confirmed, so it’s just a rumor for now. Fans of the originals are no doubt happy, perhaps hoping a higher power would stop this abomination, but having seen the original films, I have to admit, I think the franchise could use a remake. God knows the recent spate of direct-to-DVD sequels have been completely off-the-charts pointless, and the original sure looks dated nowadays.
More:
First came word that the script written by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury was being re-written by new writers because Dimension was unsatisfied with their draft. Now comes word that Bustillo Maury are officially OFF the project as Directors as well. Many media outlets are reporting that Dimension is now in search of a new direcor as Bustillo [...]

I’m still not sure why they’re remaking Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser” instead of just continuing the franchise with additional sequels. All they would have to do is NOT call the sequels sequels, and instead just kept making new “Hellraiser” movies. Heck, it’s not like the last half dozen sequels had anything to do with the original anyways, so why go back to the beginning for a reboot? But hey, who am I to question Hollywood’s insatiable appetite to pointlessly remake movies. Anyways, we already know that French directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (”Inside”) have been attached to write and direct the remake, and now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed it. Hmm, should I be slightly amused that the net reported this nearly two weeks before the “big boys” did? Slightly.

Released in 1987, “Hellraiser” told the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. The movie introduced viewers to a race of [...]

I didn’t even know they were remaking Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser”. Or actually, I was hoping they wouldn’t be remaking Barker’s “Hellraiser”. But what the hell, they’re going to do it, so whatever. News from the blokes at Bloody-Disgusting is that the upcoming remake has nabbed its directors — Frenchies Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, whose film “Inside” has been making the festival rounds, and has been snatched up by the Weinsteins to be butchered — er, I mean, released in the States. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
More from BD:
Out of all the news we’ve brought you over the past several years, this has got to be one of the best… Bloody-Disgusting learned exclusively that both Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury have officially signed on to helm the remake of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser for Dimension Films! If you’ve been keeping up with us during TIFF, you’d know that we flipped over the duo’s horror film, Inside, which the Weinstein’s acquired in Cannes. [...]
