A few days ago Variety reported (you kind of have to mine for it in the article) that veteran editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch were being brought in to recut The Wolfman, even though the release date is only a few months away, on February 12, 2010. This could be a very bad thing for the film, culminating in what has already been a tumultuous creation process, but it could be a good thing. Films can often be made in the editing room, and both editors have had extensive experience. Goldblatt has edited such films as Terminator 2 and Pearl Harbor, while Murch worked on The English Patient and Cold Mountain, winning an Oscar for sound editing in Apocalypse Now.
The point is, I hope that the film has a chance to succeed because it still looks very cool. The featurette below has some behind the scenes footage and interviews, which increases my excitement for the film. Benicio del Toro [...]

The midnight showing was sold out and electricity rocketed through the air from the excitement. It was as if a viewer was attending a midnight mass for a Goth Christmas, and when everyone got home, Edward and Jacob would have visited and left presents under the posters bearing their likeness. BOOYAH!! Everyone at Hot Topics is gettin’ laid tonight!
The amazingly rampant popularity of the “Twilight Saga” more or less makes the plot summary of this review obsolete. But for those who have lived in blissful ignorance, here is the obligatory recap.
Fearing he’s become a danger to Bella, Edward dumps her and decides he can’t live without her. So he travels to Italy to see the Volturi, the powerful vampire ruling class. He’s got a bizarre suicide plan where he’s hoping the Volturi will put an end to him once and far all. Bella meanwhile, occupies her spare time by becoming a daredevil adrenaline junkie. During this trying period [...]

With a fourth “Underworld” entry already greenlit by the studio, the biggest question on everyone’s mind (or at least, everyone who thinks werewolves and vampires fighting in a gothic setting with dark-blue scenery is awesome, anyway) is whether either of the franchise’s two British heroines will return in the leading role. Will it be Kate Beckinsale once again, as rumored, or her replacement Rhona Mitra? According to this latest report, it might be neither. Or possibly both. Okay, so I made the last part up, but one can dream, can’t one?
What is a sure thing, though, is that a writer has been assigned to pen the fourth movie in former “The Shield” scribe John Hlavin. The writer has confirmed that “Underworld 4″ will not be a prequel like the previous entry, and he added this:
“It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don’t want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to [...]

Former “8 Mile” star Brittany Murphy has been cast as the female lead in Matthew Parkhill’s horror/thriller “The Caller”, the premise of which sounds a tad sci-fi to me, or at least, a little “Twilight Zone”-ish. She joins a cast that already includes “True Blood” star Stephen Moyer and Luiz Guzman.
The film sees Murphy playing a troubled divorcee named Mary Kee, who begins receiving strange telephone calls from a mystery caller that she soon realizes is calling her from the past. This, apparently, leads Mary to believe that she must kill the caller in order to save herself. I haven’t a clue what that means, but I suspect that isn’t the film’s big twist, since, well, it’s already been revealed, hasn’t it?

And oh yeah, it also apparently has a little dash of “28 Days Later” in it, although from what I’ve seen, including the recent new faux PSA TV spot for the movie, it doesn’t look anything at all like “28 Days Later”. But hey, some guy from Variety says it is, so who am I to disagree? “Daybreakers” finally show up on January 8, 2010.
Indie filmmaking duo Michael and Peter Spierig’s upcoming vampire saga “Daybreakers” looks to be a nice departure from the romantic bloodsucker angle we’ve forced to endure as of late. I, for one, don’t mind the picture’s “Equilibrium” meets “The Matrix” aesthetic — I’m just looking for some decent action featuring a gaggle of rebel human freedom fighters battling their way through a world full of bloodsucking villains. The latest marketing tool for the flick’s January 8th release is designed to resemble a PSA, and while it isn’t as snazzy as some of the “Resident Evil” clips that were floating around a few years ago, it does a decent job of establishing tone and atmosphere. Placebo’s haunting cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up that Hill” doesn’t hurt things, either.
In case you missed it, here’s what “Daybreakers” is all about:
Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a researcher in the year 2019, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world’s population into vampires. [...]

At least, that’s the impression she gives (possibly on purpose) to the AP, who has a short article on Cox and the upcoming “Scream 4″, and for some reason insists on announcing all the actor’s age. Does that, um, really matter? I guess it does to the AP. In any case, here’s what Cox has to say about coming back for “Scream 4″, the franchise that introduced her to her future husband, David Arquette, who is also returning to the fourth installment.
“There are really only a few of us that survived,” says Cox.
Cox and Arquette will reprise their roles as overzealous reporter Gale Weathers and bumbling sheriff Dwight “Dewey” Riley in the fourth installment, along with 36-year-old actress Neve Campbell, who starred as the series’ heroine, Sidney Prescott.
Filipino director Yam Laranas did such a bang-up good job with his 2004 horror movie “Sigaw”, that he repeated the process on 2008’s “The Echo”, an English-language remake of “Sigaw” that went straight to DVD. Laranas is back with a new horror movie called “Patient X”, which has the makings of an effective “last stand in a haunted house” type, which is always something I’m down for. Trailer and poster for the movie via Bloody-Disgusting below.
Here’s the not-all-that-coherent plot synopsis for “Patient X”:
After twenty years, local police captures the murderer of the older brother of a young boy. Now a doctor, he must go back to his old town and face the murderers himself. He then discovers that the murderers are Aswangs (folkloric Filipino vampire-like creatures) and they pose a deadly threat not only to him but also for the entire town.

Let’s face it, after Kevin Williamson willingly came back to do not one, not two, but three new “Scream” movies, it’s beyond reason to expect the guy to go back to original material. So when he announces to MTV that he plans to remake Curstin Hanson’s 1987 movie “The Bedroom Window”, it’s really no big deal. And besides, did you really see “The Bedroom Window”? Of course you didn’t, which is probably what Williamson is counting on, as he plans to not just write, but also direct the remake in-between his new “Scream” trilogy.
Hanson, who would go on to write and direct Eminem in “8 Mile” and before that, the classic crime film “L.A. Confidential”, originally adapted his thriller from the novel by Anne Holden. Williamson says he will continue on that road, but his remake will be more faithful to Holden’s novel.

As a long-time Clive Baker fan, I’ve been anxiously awaiting for Anthony DiBlasi’s upcoming horror outing “Dread” to make an appearance in my neck of the woods. However, recent adaptations of Barker’s work have been somewhat of a challenge; “Midnight Meat Train,” while enjoyable, seemed somewhat empty, as did John Harrison’s lackluster “Book of Blood.” In other words, my expectations have been adjusted to reflect the latest cinematic interpretations of Barker’s twisted imagination. That being said, the trailer for “Dread” looks promising. Am I drooling with anticipation? Not yet, but I expect it to start momentarily. I’ll spare you the juicy details.
Here’s the synopsis:
Stephen and Cheryl are college students making a documentary about what people dread in life. But they have no idea that their partner Quaid, witnessed his parents being murdered by an axe-wielding lunatic and wants to make others experience his own personal horror.

I suppose, if you’re illiterate or have something against Swedish cinema, the Americanized version is a good thing, as it allows you to experience this strangely heartwarming vampire story without having to listen to a foreign language while reading all of those unsightly subtitles. My attempt to disguise my bitterness towards this project has ultimately failed, though I will try my best to reserve judgment until I’ve seen the finished product for myself. If it ends up being another “Quarantine,” I will weep. Openly.

As with any massively profitable film, “The Blair Witch Project” quickly became the foster parent to a legion of parodies and imitations trying to cash in on the hype. It didn’t matter that the franchise quickly had its’ wings cut and was buried in a shallow grave under tons of unsold merchandise bearing a stickman logo. “The St. Francisville Experiment” is one of the better knockoff, mainly because it never pretends to be anything more than it is–a low budget horror film dressed up as a documentary that promises a creepy time. Albeit a blatant ripoff, it’s at least somewhat better than what you would expect.
There is a house in St. Francisville, LA with an unspeakable history, one whose past darkness is flowing onto the present. During the 1800s, the house had a cruel mistress of the manor, who tortured and conducted sadistic medical experiments on her slaves. Her evil didn’t die with her, and the house is said to [...]

Tentacle monster in the clouds? Yeah, that seems to be the premise of “Altitude”, a new creature feature/horror movie from Kaare Andrews. And before you say I’m giving away any spoilers, I’m not — the tentacled monster is clearly shown in the trailer and in the poster that have popped up online. This is the promo trailer that is making the rounds at the American Film Market, and is said to be “unfinished”. But apparently it’s finished enough to show to prospective buyers, so it’s finished enough for us. Call me crazy, but this thing looks like it could be a damn good time in the cockpit.
After a mysterious malfunction sends their small plane climbing out of control, a rookie pilot and her four teenage friends find themselves trapped in a deadly showdown with a supernatural force.
The film stars beautiful young people Jessica Lowndes, Julianna Guill, Ryan Donowho, Landon Liboiron, Jake Weary, and is directed by Kaare Andrews.

Okay, the extra exclamation points aren’t exactly necessary, and it doesn’t mean I was shaking in my boxers when I typed it. This is expected. The horror genre is like this — when something works (i.e. makes money) everyone follows suit like monkeys. Hence, everything is now being shot in 3D. Because, well, it worked for the first movie that did it, so why not? In any case, Lionsgate has announced “Saw 7″ for 2010, despite the lackluster box office showing of the last installment.
But that’s not really a surprise, but here’s what is. Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns said this when asked about the sequel:
“As long as we make money on it we’ll keep doing this.”
Now THAT is some brutal honesty right there, folks.
The “Saw” movies have been seeing diminishing returns with each subsequent sequel. The first sequel took in $87 million, while last year’s installment only brought in $57. And this year’s? A paltry $27 million. [...]

As a fan of director Tommy Wirkola’s Nazi zombie opus “Dead Snow,” I’m super jazzed about the filmmaker’s upcoming Stateside project “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” a film that’s being produced for Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer Dante Harper is set to handle scripting duties, which should be a pleasant surprise for fans of Charles Burns’ “Black Hole.” Harper, along with director David Fincher, had a hand in developing the comic book series.
In case you’ve been out of the loop for a while, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” follows the duo into adulthood, where they have become witch-hunting mercenaries. Co-producer Adam McKay, at one point, stated that he wanted to develop three of these, though I suspect his lofty ambitions will be greatly determined by the first’s box office success.

Now before you get your panties into a bunch and start decrying a writer from a show about chain smoking ad execs in the ’60s writing a horror-comedy vampire reboot, consider this: before she landed on the award-winning “Mad Men” on AMC as writer/producer, Marti Noxon was a writer on both “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”. So right there, you know the woman is vastly talented to go between the two genres on such extreme opposites of the spectrum. Unless, of course, you always suspected there was something odd about those ad execs…
THR reports that Noxon has been assigned scripting duties by Dreamworks on their remake of the horror-comedy “Fright Night”. Written and directed by Tom Holland, the 1985 original starred William Ragsdale as a teenage horror movie aficionado who suspects that his new next door neighbor is actually a vampire. To help stake the vamp (played by Chris Sarandon), the teen enlists the services of a washed up [...]

Back in the day, I was a Full Moon Entertainment fanatic. The creepy, strange-smelling video store near my childhood home always carried the latest FM flicks, and I was always one of the first to check them out. It’s probably the reason why I’m still addicted to Charles Band movies, despite the fact that the man’s recent output has been somewhat lackluster. Be that as it may, I’m pretty pumped about the upcoming Full Moon release “Puppet Master: Axis of Evil,” the 9th film in this long-running series. Details are fleeting at the moment, but from what I’ve gleaned from the trailer below, you get Nazis, a puppet regurgitating a slug, and someone’s skull getting drilled. Truthfully, isn’t that really all you need to know on the subject?
If you require more info, here’s the synopsis:
In a stateside hotel during the height of World War II, young Danny Coogan dreams of joining the war effort. Following the murder of hotel guest [...]

Apparently the Powers That Be (aka the guys who own the rights to the franchise) have decided to reboot “The Howling”, a series of werewolf movies from the ’80s that, like all ’80s horror movie franchises, spawned a series of wholly unnecessary (and, presumably, increasingly shitty) sequels. I wasn’t a big fan of the franchise, so the news doesn’t really get me all riled up as reboot news usually do. But Arrow in the Head thinks they know what the reboot will be all about. Hint: It’s “Twilight”, but with werewolves. And we’re not talking about those giant wolves in the “Twilight” movies. I mean, what the frak are those about?
The REBORN screenplay opens in a similar manner to the 1981 Dante film, with a young reporter – named Karen White – meeting up with a serial killer who is stalking her. In this version, however, there are no cops who burst in on the scene: she’s confronted and murdered [...]
