The midnight showing was sold out and electricity rocketed through the air from the excitement. It was as if a viewer was attending a midnight mass for a Goth Christmas, and when everyone got home, Edward and Jacob would have visited and left presents under the posters bearing their likeness. BOOYAH!! Everyone at Hot Topics is gettin’ laid tonight!
The amazingly rampant popularity of the “Twilight Saga” more or less makes the plot summary of this review obsolete. But for those who have lived in blissful ignorance, here is the obligatory recap.
Fearing he’s become a danger to Bella, Edward dumps her and decides he can’t live without her. So he travels to Italy to see the Volturi, the powerful vampire ruling class. He’s got a bizarre suicide plan where he’s hoping the Volturi will put an end to him once and far all. Bella meanwhile, occupies her spare time by becoming a daredevil adrenaline junkie. During this trying period [...]

As with any massively profitable film, “The Blair Witch Project” quickly became the foster parent to a legion of parodies and imitations trying to cash in on the hype. It didn’t matter that the franchise quickly had its’ wings cut and was buried in a shallow grave under tons of unsold merchandise bearing a stickman logo. “The St. Francisville Experiment” is one of the better knockoff, mainly because it never pretends to be anything more than it is–a low budget horror film dressed up as a documentary that promises a creepy time. Albeit a blatant ripoff, it’s at least somewhat better than what you would expect.
There is a house in St. Francisville, LA with an unspeakable history, one whose past darkness is flowing onto the present. During the 1800s, the house had a cruel mistress of the manor, who tortured and conducted sadistic medical experiments on her slaves. Her evil didn’t die with her, and the house is said to [...]

The landmark Korean ghost series “Whispering Corridors” returns for its fifth instalment with “A Blood Pledge”, marking the debut of director Lee Jong Yong, an interesting choice for the helm, given his previous work under Park Chan Wook on the likes of “JSA” and “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”. The film continues very much in the tradition of its predecessors, being set at an all-girls school, dealing with contemporary themes and concerns of friendship, and of course presenting a new set of up and coming young actresses no doubt hoping to follow in the footsteps of former “Whispering” alumni Kim Min Sun, Kim Ok Bin, Kim Kyu Ri, Seo Ji Hye, and Choi Kang Hee. Interestingly, the film not only performed well at the domestic box office, but is the first of its brethren to have been mooted for a possible Hollywood remake.
The plot begins in suitably morbid fashion, as a young girl called Eon Joo (Jang Kyeong Ah) throws [...]

Originally unleashed back in 1984, “Silent Night, Deadly Night” was the subject of great controversy due to its premise of a serial killer dressed as Santa Claus, with outraged authorities and parents protesting its US release. The film encountered similar moral panic in the UK, where the ever-wise British Board of Film Classification refused it a certificate, effectively banning it. Inevitably, this has led to it building up a considerable cult following over the years, with many fans considering it one of the better films of the golden age of mid-80s slashers, and with it inspiring no less than 4 sequels of variable quality and tenuous linkage. Now, the film is finally available on region 2 DVD in its most complete form, just in time for Christmas, thanks to Arrow Video, coming with a jolly host of extras including an interview with director Charles E. Sellier Jr. and a booklet containing various pieces of production information.
The film starts with [...]

INT: Sony Pictures offices.
A studio head sits at his desk and ushers in another man
Man: I’ve got a pitch for a new horror film.
Sony Man: Go for it.
Man: It’s about crocodiles!
Sony Man: Next.
Man: Killer crocodiles.
Sony Man: Been there, done that.
Man: Umm, it’s a sequel to Lake Placid!
Sony Man: Who wants to see a sequel to that?
Man: Err, everyone?
Sony Man: NEXT.
Man: Um…there’ll be two crocodiles this time…
Sony Man: Big wow. Next.
**SPOILER WARNING**
Man: OK THERE’LL BE FOUR FUCKING CROCODILES.
**END OF SPOILERS**
Sony Man: This will be the greatest film in the history of everything.

Just in time for Halloween, Palisades Tartan has grouped together three of the most successful Asian horror films of recent years in one region 2 DVD collection. Although terms such as ‘essential’ are woefully overused when it comes to such compilations, in this case it certainly rings true, as the three titles are arguably among the most important and influential examples of the modern Asian genre – not least since two of them have been the subject of markedly less successful Hollywood remakes. The films in question, “Audition”, “Dark Water” and “The Eye” also provide a showcase for three highly acclaimed directors in the ever prolific Takashi Miike (still best known in the West for his infamous “Ichi the Killer”), The Pang Brothers (who recently headed for the US themselves with “The Messengers” and a remake of their own “Bangkok Dangerous”) and Hideo Nakata, whose “Ringu” launched the new wave of Eastern horror.
First up is Miike’s “Audition” which, simply [...]

The buzz surrounding writer/director Oren Peli’s popular 2007 “found footage” horror outing “Paranormal Activity,” has been, in a word, astronomical. In addition to the countless testimonials I’ve read on message boards and entertainment websites alike, scores of people from all walks of life have told me how brutally intense and genuinely frightening this film is, which may help to explain my reluctance to experience it for myself. Truth be told, my stance on public opinion isn’t what you’d call positive, especially when it comes to mainstream American horror. I believe the word I’m looking for is “jaded,” though I’m sure others would probably call it “unchecked film geek snobbery.”
Simply put, “Paranormal Activity” just isn’t that scary. Unnerving and a little eerie, yes, but definitely not scary. It’s kind of like the television series “Ghost Hunters” without the remote possibility that these supposed supernatural events are, in fact, the real deal. Take reality out of the equation and all you’ve [...]

As his father continues to attempt to rejuvenate his seemingly never-ending “Dead” series, Cameron Romero follows up his debut “The Screening” with another slice of familiar horror in “Staunton Hill”. Although this may sound a little cynical, the film really is pretty basic stuff, being a by the numbers “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” knock off, with youngsters being chased and killed by psychotic rednecks in the rural backwoods. Still, Romero shows himself to be a better director than most, and the film benefits from a decent cast of half recognisable faces, if not names, including Cristen Coppen (“Road Trip”), David Rountree (“XXX2”, and who also scripted), Kiko Ellsworth (from the television series “Heroes” and “Dexter”) and Charlie Bodin (briefly in “Transformer”).
The plot is familiar to say the least, set in Virginia in the autumn of 1969 and following five student types who are hitchhiking their way across country to the political rallies taking place in Washington. After finding themselves ditched [...]

“Knife Edge” sees the return to the horror genre of director Anthony Hickox, who back in the late 1980s and early 1990s turned out a string of popular, offbeat favourites including “Waxwork”, its sequel “Lost in Time”, and “Sundown: the Vampire in Retreat”, the latter two featuring the legendary Bruce Campbell. Although Hickox did have a stab at the relatively big time with “Hellraiser: Hell on Earth”, since then he had stuck mainly to television affairs and standard action films, such as the Eddie Griffin vehicle “Blast” and Steven Segal’s “Submerged”. With his being one of the more creative genre directors, who always managed to bring a certain sense of ghoulish fun to his productions, fans should certainly be glad to see him coming back to the fold, and although “Knife Edge” is not a particularly great film by his standards, it is still a cut above the usual direct to DVD drudgery.
The plot follows a Wall Street stockbroker [...]

All movies bafflingly fond of placing needless numbers in place of letters in their titles. A moot point yes, but an important one, for apart from “Se7en” (also notably the first film to start this trend), the quality of the aforementioned movies must surely be seen as on the lower end of the spectrum. So, what of “7eventy 5ive”? Is it better than “s1m0ne”, “Thr3e” and “Thir13n Ghosts”? Just about. Is it as ‘dynamic’ as its title? Unfor7unately n0t.
“7eventy 5ive” concerns a gang of college students known as (wait for it) ‘the 75′ who engage in a game which involves prank calling random numbers and aiming to keep the other person on the line for seventy five seconds without them laughing or hanging up. Of course they inevitably prank call the wrong trucker person and soon an axe-wielding maniac is on the loose and picking them off one by one at [...]

The ‘Afterdark Horrorfest’ doesn’t register on most of the minds of people in Britain, so the films that fall under this banner most often appear in the U.K with little fanfare. It’s certainly a shame though, for gems such as “Autopsy” and “Dark Ride” end up hitting the shelves without much of an impact. The same could be said for “Dying Breed”, which although highly derivative of other, better horrors, would still please even moderate genre fans.
The muddled ‘story’ has four twenty-somethings travelling into the deep countryside of Tasmania in an attempt to photograph the extinct Tasmanian Tiger. Nina, a zoologist, is especially interested in continuing the work of her sister who went missing in the dense forests a few years ago. Unfortunately, as is evident in the first ten or so minutes, Nina is joined with a particularly unlikeable group, with one character seemingly a relation of Stifler, who not only likes to get laid, [...]

“Blood: the last Vampire” is an interesting proposition, not only because it sees Jeon Ji Hyun (“My Sassy Girl”), one of Korea’s most popular actresses, making her English language debut, but also since it represents one of the few Hollywood Japanese anime adaptations to make a real effort to build upon its source material. The film is based upon the 2000 anime from Production I.G of “Ghost in the Shell” fame, which was directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (one of the key animators who worked on the classic “Akira”), and was helmed by Chris Nahon, who previously had cross-cultural cinematic experiences with the French-English outings “Empire of the Wolves”, and “Kiss of the Dragon”, arguably one of Jet Li’s better Western efforts. Adding to its pedigree is the presence of Corey Yuen, one of Hong Kong’s most prolific and best known action directors, who recently worked on the likes of “Transporter 3” and John Woo’s epic “Red Cliff”.

“I Sell the Dead” marks the debut outing for writer director Glenn McQuaid, and boasts a great offbeat cast, including Dominic Monaghan of “Lord of the Rings” fame, cult director Larry Fessenden (“Habit”, “The Last Winter”), Angus Schrimm (“Phantasm”) and “Hellboy” himself, Ron Perlman. Although the term label ‘comedy horror’ is quite possibly enough to terrify most genre fans in the worst way, the film is one of the very few examples of the form to strike the tricky balance between laughs and scares, mainly since McQuaid puts a great deal of effort into lovingly recreating the atmosphere of the old Hammer Horror classics, tinged with modern touches. The results are highly entertaining, and the film has rightly been a hit at various events during a successful tour, winning Best Independent Feature at Toronto’s After Dark Film Festival. It now arrives on region 2 DVD via Anchor Bay, complete with commentary from McQaid, Monaghan and Fessenden, plus a short making [...]

Originally released back in 2006 under the slightly more interesting, if nonsensical title “Automation Transfusion”, writer director Steven C. Miller’s debut feature now arrives on region 2 DVD via Momentum Pictures as “Zombie Transfusion”. The film is a low budget slice of independent horror, planned as the first part of a trilogy, a fact which gives a good indication as to the level of ambition behind the project. Certainly, although somewhat hampered by its obvious lack of resources and inevitably a bit rough around the edges, the film is a cut above the usual kind of nonsense that has made the direct to DVD market a virtual no-go area for genre fans.
The plot is pretty basic zombie apocalypse style stuff, following a group of three small town high school friends who decide to head into the city one night for a rock concert rather than attending a jock party. En route, they notice that the road is a little [...]

To be clear, Ruben Fleischer’s “Zombieland” is less a zombie movie than it is a road movie/comedy. Just to get that out of the way first, because if you’re going into “Zombieland” demanding decent zombie action, I have to tell you, you’ll find the film to be lacking. But if you can put away that expectation, and just take the film for what it is, then you should have plenty of good times. It is, after all, a movie where all four main characters are named after cities.
“Zombieland” got to be that way, we’re told via voiceover narration by our gutless hero Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), because of Mad Cow disease, which turned into Mad Human disease, and before you know it, it’s the zombie apocalypse. Our hero Columbus is a World of Warcraft enthusiast and your basic single guy loser/slacker who has managed to survive the end of the world by following a set of rules, such as finding [...]

You know the worst thing about sitting through a horror/creature movie where a group of disparate characters are trapped in one locale and forced to put aside their differences and team up in order to survive the menace outside? You can pretty much count on at least one (sometimes more) asshole in the group that will antagonize everyone, and at the same time simply annoy the living crap out of the moviegoer. Screenwriters come up with these asshole characters because they believe it’s an easy way to elicit interpersonal conflict without trying too hard. (Hey, want conflict? Put a KKK guy in the same room with a black dude from the ghetto, and watch the fireworks!) It’s lazy and predictable writing, and of course, the forced conflict annoys to no end. Kyle Rankin, the writer/director of “Infestation” apparently feels the same way, because as soon as he introduces the asshole characters in his movie, he immediately kills them off. Needless [...]

Not yet another book on vampires!
You may be excused for reacting like this upon seeing this title: vampires have been done to death – in movies, in comics, in fiction, in non-fiction, in criticism… The only trouble is, there’s no real ‘death’ when you’re talking about the undead. They just keep coming back.
The eternal popularity of vampires, and new ways of interpreting them, is what this new book is all about. I must admit: I approached it with a somewhat jaded expression: “Surprise me!” And it did surprise me with its amount of fresh and intriguing perspectives on the nosferatu. The variety and richness of the essays collected here certainly offer many intriguing pages for both fans and scholars of the undead creatures.
The book is divided into three sections: Part I: Tackling Race, Gender, and Modes of Narration in America; Part II: Working through Change and Xenophobia in Europe, and the largest and most revealing section – Part III: [...]

IRS auditors and repo men have encountered cheerier faces than those seen leaving a screening of Rob Zombie’s latest magnum opus. Where is Michael Myers, and what has Zombie done with him? Instead of a horror icon, we’re given a shambling hulk who looks like a homeless man with a pituitary problem.
“Halloween II” picks up just after Laurie Strode blasted Myers point blank in the face. Found covering in blood and wandering dazed on the road, she’s taken to the hospital. In a reverent nod to the original sequel, Michael Myers reappears to wreck bloody havoc upon the nursing staff–then on the parking lot attendant when he runs out of nurses. But in a flash it turns out to be only one of Laurie’s nightmares; two years have elapsed and she’s gone from being a good girl to looking like she buys her outfits from vendors at rock concerts. She’s in therapy, haunted by Myers and the death of her [...]

Spanish horror has been prominent on the international scream scene of late, with the likes of “REC” and “The Orphanage” offering another alternative to the increasingly bland tide of remakes flowing sluggishly from Hollywood. “Sexy Killer”, from director Miguel Martí (previously responsible for comedies such as “Fin de curso” and “Slam”) sees the country taking an enthusiastic stab at that most notoriously difficult to nail of subgenres, namely the comedy horror. Hitting the right balance between laughs and scares, whilst delivering enough gore groceries to keep the fans happy is no easy task, though Martí manages to pull it off thanks to a sense of wild abandon, and an anything goes approach which mixes genre references with pop culture campery and a charmingly psychotic sensibility.
The film gets off to a good start, with a little bit of homicidal role reversal as a “Scream” mask wearing would-be peeping tom ends up being brutally dispatched whilst trying to scare some naked [...]

“From Within” is the first film from Phedon Papamichael as a director for nearly 15 years, following his forgettable early 1990s thrillers “Dark Side of Genius” and “Sketch Artist”. The time since has certainly been well spent, with Papamichael honing his craft as one of the top cinematographers in the business, having worked on the likes of “Sideways”, “Walk the Line”, “W” and “3:10 to Yuma” as director of photography. Perhaps having learned his lessons, he has here returned behind the camera in a different way with a slice of Bible belt horror as suicides and ghostly visions torment a small Christian community in the American south. Interestingly enough, despite the setting, the film draws its influences quite obviously from the recent wave of modern Asian ghost chillers, perhaps unsurprisingly given that writer Brad Keene was also recently responsible for remake non-sequel “The Grudge 3”.
The film begins with a young goth teen eating his gun, after which his terrified [...]
