It’s hard to believe, but Quentin Tarantino’s biggest box office debut so far has been 2004’s “Kill Bill”, which opened with $25 million on its way to a $66 million domestic haul. Five years later, Tarantino returns with his fantasized version of World War II, “Inglourious Basterds”, which exceeded industry expectations by pulling in an impressive $37.6 million in its debut, according to studio estimates.
Budgeted at around $70 million, “Inglourious Basterds” marks Tarantino’s biggest opening film to date, and seems poised to overtake the $107 million that his 1992 breakthrough film “Pulp Fiction” took in at the domestic box office. Of course, the film’s second week will determine if this weekend’s $37 million came from diehard QT fans (you know, the ones that scour these here Interwebs and pee in their pants whenever he announces a movie?), or if it has, as the industry folks say, “legs”. My guess is that anyone who wanted to see the film has seen [...]

This is your open discussion thread for Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds”, a World War II movie unlike any you’ve ever seen as envisioned by the same wacky mind that brought us the two “Kill Bill” films (and apparently “Basterds” is nearly just as long at over two and a half hours). The film, which opens today, stars Brad Pitt as the head of a Nazi-scalpin’ division behind enemy lines, Mike Myers as a British General, and Diane Kruger as the femme fatale spy.
Word is, the film is talky. Perhaps too talky, even by QT standards. Or was it just right?
In German-occupied France, Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa. Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to [...]

In 20 years, film aficionados and historians will probably look back at the last 5 years or so and shake their heads at all the silly viral marketing that Hollywood shells out big bucks for and wonder, “What were they thinking?” Truth be told, does any of these viral marketing videos work? They pretty much depend on websites posting them, but even when that happens, people mention that these are marketing gimmicks by various studios for various movies, so you would figure the ability to generate “viral” buzz loses some steam when everyone knows what they’re for. The big granddaddy of them all was, of course, “The Blair Witch Project”. Everything else after it has just been kind of “bleh”.
Anyways, here’s the latest, a faux trailer (and poster, above) for a Nazi propaganda film called “Nation’s Pride”, directed by Eli Roth (one of the stars of the movie). You decide if it’s worth the money they put into it.

Oh, that Quentin Tarantino, he knows subtlety like I know romantic comedies, and I know romantic comedies like no one’s business. Check out the latest poster for QT’s “Inglourious Basterds”, which features a gun-toting Brad Pitt standing on a pile of dead Nazi bodies. I think they’re trying to say something with this poster, but I can’t just put my finger on it…
In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers.
Starring Brad Pitt, Cloris Leachman, Diane Kruger, Mike Myers, B.J.
Empire Online brings you five new posters for Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” this glorious Friday. The first one, with the cast, was seen before in International style, but these are all English versions. Each poster has a quote on it from the character it’s showing off, cause obviously dialogue is what QT is known for. Hopefully rumors that the movie is nothing BUT dialogue has been overhype, because it sure looks like there are plenty of action from the trailers. Then again, trailers have been known to lie.

That rascal Hitler. He sure loved his movies. Or at least, he does in Quentin Tarantino’s version of World War II, which has the evil German master race, er, master going to a French movie theater, where the film’s good guys flock to kill his ass. Check out a new, International (aka French) trailer for Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds”, which I must admit, gets me more and more intrigued everytime I see something new for it.

If you were one of those people who were less than impressed with the first talky trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s re-imagining of WWII, then this new, second full trailer should feel like a kick in the pants. It’s still got Brad Pitt doing that weird accent of his (”bidness”?), still very talky, but it’s funnier, quirkier, and definitely fills in more of the film’s plot, namely that the Basterds plan to infiltrate a Nazi gathering at a movie theater that will be attended by none other than Hitler himself. Also, we finally see Mike Myers as a British General in the movie. Good stuff, and finally makes me want to see this thing. Sure, it’ll still be talky as hell most likely (it is a QT movie, after all), but at least it’ll be funny, too.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” doesn’t open until August 21st, but reviews for the film are already pouring in thanks to its recent Cannes showing. As of this writing, the film currently has as 58% positive rating over at Rotten Tomatoes based on 12 reviews from critics. That’s surprisingly low for a Tarantino movie; critics usually lap up his stuff regardless of what he throws out there. Some choice reviews from the big cheeses below.
Variety didn’t care very much for the first half, but warmed to the second, and goes out of its way to praise actor Christoph Waltz, who plays the movie’s baddie:
By turns surprising, nutty, windy, audacious and a bit caught up in its own cleverness, the picture is a completely distinctive piece of American pop art with a strong Euro flavor that’s new for the director…
In a true ensemble picture, Waltz stands head and shoulders above the rest with a lusty performance in the juiciest role.

Meanwhile, three new clips from the film have appeared online. One is a quickie featuring the movie’s villain, Hans Lada (Christoph Waltz) giving his opinions on Jews, another has Brad Pitt’s wacky accented American interrogating a Nazi, and the final clip features Pitt again, this time vetting Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger).

Which seems a tad premature, but then again, he’s the superstar filmmaker and I’m the guy writing this article while spilling juice on my pajamas, so I’ll default to him to do what’s best when it comes to his bastards. I’m assuming he’s teaching his guys the finer points of Nazi scalpin’ in this scene. Either that, or he’s got an itch.

After all, you can only misspell bastards on purpose so many times before you want to punch yourself in the face. So, here’s the latest, with Eli Roth. More will be coming, I’m sure. This one via The Quentin Tarantino Archive.
Starring Brad Pitt, Cloris Leachman, Diane Kruger, Mike Myers, B.J. Novak, Eli Roth, Samm Levine, Til Schweiger, Michael Fassbender, Julie Dreyfus, Daniel Brühl, Rod Taylor, Mélanie Laurent, Jacky Ido, Paul Rust, Omar Doom, Ludger Pistor, Christoph Waltz, Michael Bacall, directed by Quentin Tarantino, and due out August 21, 2009.

Whoa, check out the huge honkin’ scar along Brad Pitt’s character in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds”. Wonder what’s the story there, and is that the reason why Pitt’s character Lt. Aldo Raine is so obsessed with scalpin’ them Nazis? (It’s either that, or because Nazis ain’t got no humanity!) Here’s a new “Basterds” poster featuring Raine, sporting that clear as day ugly scar. Ouch, looks like it still hurts.

In case you missed it, ol long chin himself was on American Idol last night tutoring the remaining contestants on songs from the cinema. What, you didn’t watch American Idol last night? What kind of an American are you? I’m sick and disgusted by you. Anyhoo. Quentin Tarantino showed up on last night’s AI to help the kids sing songs from the cinema. Now what Tarantino is doing giving advice on how to sing is anybody’s guess (and who are we to question the AI Gods), but they also showed a clip from QT’s upcoming “Inglourious Basterds”, which is the clip below. And remember, kids, Nazis ain’t got no humanity!

Vanity Fair has seven new artsy fartsy pictures from Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming WWII movie “Inglourious Basterds”, which is making its premiere at Cannes later this month. The film is being described as “‘Pulp Fiction’ meets ‘The Dirty Dozen’ meets ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’”. Or in other words, a lot of other movies Tarantino has seen and liked, except it’s really talky.

Once upon a time in Nazi occupied France, Quentin Tarantino decided to make a World War II movie about a bunch of guys on a mission behind enemy lines because he saw another World War II movie by some guy name Enzo G. Castellari called “Quel maledetto treno blindato”, aka “Inglorious Bastards”. The result: “Inglourious Basterds”, starring Brad Pitt.
