The big, universal complaint about Doug Liman’s sci-fi “Jumper” is that it’s too short on details, leaving big plot holes about the Paladins, the secret organization led by Samuel L. Jackson’s character, whose sole goal is to kill jumpers like Hayden Christensen’s character in the movie. But fear not, nit-picky critic types, because after “Jumper” took in $34 million in its 4-day opening weekend, you can expect your answers in “Jumper 2″.
But the weekend’s big surprise has to be the streetdancing sequel “Step Up 2: The Streets”, which took in an impressive $26 million in its debut. Not bad for a movie that is as “street” as “West Side Stories”, but I’m guessing scenes of the film’s midriff-baring star Briana Evigan dancing in the streets during the pouring rain sequence sold the flick.
Coming in at #3 was the fantasy kids adventure movie “The Spiderwick Chronicles”, which actually performed quite well with $21 million. Will that be enough for a sequel? [...]

Here’s the second trailer for Doug Liman’s “Jumper”. I’ve now seen both trailers, and I still can’t figure out if Samuel L. Jackson is a villain or if he’s working for someone and trying to recruit the Hayden Christensen character ala “XXX”. I can’t see Jackson playing a straight villain, and that other jumper (Scottish? Irish?) just looks damn shady enough to be the real villain. The film also shows more of Rachel Bilson.
A genetic anomaly allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between “Jumpers” and those who have sworn to kill them.
Liman sure is using up the “teleport” special effects in the trailer. Does this kid teleport from the couch to the bathroom, too?

We’ve already seen the trailer for “Jumper”, and director Doug Liman has already told us what kind of genius stuff he put into the movie, so it’s about time we saw the first official poster for it, right? The guys over at Joblo.com was kind enough to provide us with that. So here you go. It has that guy from the “Star Wars” prequels standing on a monument in Egypt looking over the desert. I guess this is supposed to indicate that the kid can “jump” anywhere instantaneously, although why anyone would jump to Egypt and stand on the head of a Sphinx is kinda weird, but there you go.

Okay, so I made fun of Doug Liman’s amazing ability to promote himself, but there’s no doubt about it — the guy knows how to do action movies, and after you’ve seen the trailer for his latest, the sci-fi/fantasy flick “Jumper”, I think you’ll agree. It actually looks a lot cooler than I thought it would, at least from reading the synopsis of the original novels by Steven Gould. Either Liman and co-writer David Goyer has completey reworked Gould’s original novel, or that book was a lot darker than I thought it was. Plus, you really, really don’t want to get on Samuel L. Jackson’s back side, especially when he has a metal rod thingie in his hand. Head down below to see the trailer.

I promise, I’m not becoming obsessed with director Doug Liman. It’s purely coincidence that I’m doing two Doug Liman stories in a roll. Promise. In any case, Empire Online has an interview with Doug Liman in their upcoming offline issue, and they have excerpts from the interview online now. There is one really big detail about the movie that I hadn’t known before, and that’s Samuel L. Jackson’s Government character, who Liman calls, “a government agent tasked with tracking and killing all jumpers”. I didn’t know that. I thought Jackson was just the Government guy who roped the jumper, someone who can instantly teleport anywhere, in and make him work for them.
Liman also goes on to talk about himself — a lot. I’m assuming he’ll talk more about himself in the Empire issue, because the dude really seems full of himself.
Some quotes:

David S. Goyer is one busy man. No, let me rephrase that: I don’t know how anyone can work as hard or on as many projects at once the way David Goyer does. I swear there must be two or three Davids out there running around scripting “Magneto” and “Jumper” and scouting locations for “Magneto” while at the same time plotting the details of the latest Invisible Man movie. The guy is, in a word, prolific. In fact, if you looked up “prolific” in the dictionary, it could very well be David Goyer’s bald head staring back at you with a big, fanboy grin on his face.
Now David Goyer has talked to Wizard Mag about his upcoming projects, with emphasis on the “s” behind “project”.
About “Magneto”, which he will be writing and directing:
“We’re scouting and budgeting now. It’s the origins of the X-Men with Magneto and Charles Xavier. We’ve done some scouts and it mostly takes place in Europe and [...]

I’ve heard of the movie “Jumper” for a while now, and the premise totally appeals to me. In short, it’s about a kid who learns he can teleport instantaneously everywhere just by thinking about it, which he learns he can do when he teleports away from his abusive father one day. Soon, the NSA gets wind of him and decides to use him for super spy stuff. It’s based on a series of novels by Steven Gould, and stars the bad actor from the Star Wars prequels and the girl from “The OC”. As I read it, the filmmakers are looking at a trilogy (again with the wannabe trilogies!).
A smart kid with a tough family life discovers that he has the ability to teleport. Empowered, he leaves home for NYC. While using his abilities to track the man he blames for the death of his mother years earlier, he draws the attention of both the NSA and a possibly nefarious [...]
