Britain’s The Daily Mail has your first look at Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith on the set of their “Karate Kid” remake, since redubbed “The Kung Fu Kid”. Frankly, they should have called it that in the first place and just don’t ever mention the “Karate Kid” remake part. That way, they would have saved themselves a lot of grief, considering that they won’t even be trading on the “Karate Kid” name when it’s time to sell the movie to the masses. I’m just sayin’.
In the movie, Jaden Smith plays a young American kid who arrives in Beijing, China with his re-located single mother. When he’s bullied by the locals, Smith comes to the attention of his building’s super, played by Jackie Chan, who teaches the kid the art of self-defense. He uses his newfound skills to beat up people and steal their money.

It’s official: The AP says Will Smith has arrived in Beijing, China to begin production on his remake of the 1980s movie “The Karate Kid”. The remake will be called “Kung Fu Kid”, and will star Smith’s kid Jaden as the titular kid, and Jackie Chan as the old Chinese guy handyman who acts goofy but is secretly a kung fu master who teaches the kid how to defend himself from some bullies. Then the kid uses his newfound abilities to pick up chicks, much to the old guy’s horror. Hey, he is a Smith, after all. Taraji P. Henson will play his cinematic mom.
Work pressures cause a single mother moves to China with her young son; in his new home, the boy embraces karate, taught to him by a master of the self-defense form.
The remake will be directed by Harald Zwart, who last helmed “The Pink Panther 2″, and before that, “One Night at McCool’s”. Steve Conrad, who last [...]

The “Karate Kid” remake (or “Kung Fu Kid”, or whatever it ends up being called eventually) is apparently so deep and insightful, one writer wasn’t enough to delve into all the questions that the characters ponder throughout the movie, such as: if the Chinese dude who works in my building knows kung fu, should I ask him to teach me? And of course, other philosophical enigmas such as, “Why the hell are we remaking ‘The Karate Kid’? Why couldn’t we just call it something else and avoid the fanboy hoopla?” Anyways. On to the news!
Via THR’s Risky Biz Blog comes news that Will Smith’s work program for his sons — aka Will Smith-produced movies starring his kids — has brought on a second writer to finish work on “The Karate Kid” remake. Writer Steven Conrad has been brought onboard to polish up the current script by Chris Murphy. Conrad is no stranger to working with the Smiths, having written Big [...]

It used to be that I minded remaking “The Karate Kid”, mostly because I remember watching and loving the film with a bunch of friends as kids. We were so captivated by it that we immediately ran outside and started crane-kicking each other in the stomach. Ah, good times. So yes, I don’t like the idea of remaking “The Karate Kid”, but you know what — whatever. Remake whatever you want, Will Smith. For those dying to see Jackie Chan teach Will Smith’s son how to do kung fu, we now have a closer look at the plot from the remake. It’s, er, basically the same movie.
Moviehole fills us in on what we can expect from “The Karate Kid” (rumors of the film title being changed to “Kung Fu Kid” has not quite panned out, apparently):
The story has single mother Sherry and her son Dre (yes, Dre, not Daniel) moving to Beijing where Sherry has been transferred. Mother and son [...]

By now you probably now that Will Smith is remaking “The Karate Kid” with his own kid as the star. You also know that Jackie Chan will play the Mister Miyagi character, and that the remake will take place in Beijing, China. And since Smith has gone out of his way to even call up the former Karate Kid himself Ralph Macchio for advice on making the remake, it stands to reason that the next thing to do now is to … rename the movie “Kung Fu Kid”?
The apparent title change comes out of Jackie Chan’s mouth himself, who was currently on foreign soil promoting his upcoming drama “The Shinjuku Incident”. Says Chan to 3 News:
Chan’s not ready to turn his back on Hollywood entirely. He has just shot The Spy Next Door, and confirmed he has signed up to “wax on wax off” as Mr Miyagi in the The Karate Kid remake.

Okay, so maybe Ralph Macchio, the original star of “The Karate Kid” didn’t exactly say that, but you gotta admit, that’s a better headline than, say, “Ralph Macchio Is Not Happy About Remake”. I mean, where’s the uummph in that? Anyways, it appears Ralph Macchio is not all that happy with Will Smith’s intentions to remake “The Karate Kid”, with Big Willy’s 10-year old son Jaden set to star and Jackie Chan in negotiations to take over the Mister Miyagi role. The remake is being set in Beijing, China, so Chan would fit right at home and, one assumes, be playing a character not named Miyagi. One hopes, anyway, as that would just be … stupid.
Here’s what the Macchio one tells MTV via IMDB:
“It feels pretty good that some people are pretty angry that they’re trying to remake The Karate Kid. It feels good that the public feels you don’t touch certain things. Some times you go back to that, [...]

I’m pretty sure Will Smith is a great guy and all that, but you gotta figure that his kid Jaden Smith will grow up and go either of two ways: so industry-savvy that he’ll do just as well as Dad, or so effed up because he’s never had to work for a thing in his life, including fame and fortune, that he’ll end up the male version of Paris Hilton. Only worst. Like, about twenty times worst. Drew Barrymore worst, minus the strange lisping. Either way, that won’t stop Smith from casting his son yet again, this time as the lead in his remake of “The Karate Kid”. To help the little squirt learn how to paint the fence and wax on and wax off, Smith has recruited none other than Jackie Chan to play the reincarnated Mister Miyagi.

Last year when it was first rumored that Will Smith would be putting his kid in a remake of the 1984 movie “The Karate Kid”, people were understandably puzzled. For one, Smith’s kid, Jaden, was, well, a kid, and the original character was a teenager. Later, Smith seemed to dispel the rumor that he was engaging in good ol fashion nepotism, and even went as far as to say he had nothing to do with any proposed remake. Apparently that was then, and this is now, and now the trades have Smith producing a remake of “The Karate Kid” with his kid Jaden Smith starring, as originally reported in 2007.
Variety breaks down the raping of your childhood:
Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit “The Karate Kid,” which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith.
The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment’s [...]

All these rumors around the proposed Will Smith remake of “The Karate Kid” is just getting plain silly. First there were rumors that Smith was going to shove his own kid down our throats in an act of grand nepotism by making the kid the titular karate kid, but then his press people denied the reports. For a while there, there were rumors that Jackie Chan was being asked to play Mister Miyagi. And now — Stephen Chow somehow producing, starring, or directing the movie?
Well that’s the word from CriEnglish.com. Here’s what they said:
Hollywood star Will Smith met actor-filmmaker Stephen Chow Friday in Hong Kong, where he attended the Asian premiere of the sci-fi thriller “I am Legend,” and invited him to produce, direct and star in the remake of the hit 1984 martial arts movie “The Karate Kid.”
Reports say Smith selected Chow because he likes the innovative actions in Chow’s “Kung Fu Hustle,” as well as his latest [...]

Not long ago it was said that Will Smith was eyeing a remake of the 1980s classic “The Karate Kid”, and that he would produce the film. Then some people said he would also direct it, making it his directorial debut, which I found to be lacking in validity. Big-time movie stars never direct a big-time movie on their first outing; they always go for something small, and work their way up. It’s almost a Hollywood Law or something. Then there were those rumors that Smith would be casting his 9-year old son Jaden in the lead, and somewhere, somehow, Jackie Chan’s name got thrown into the mix as playing Mister Miyagi. Well apparently every single Karate Kid remake news has been crap, because Smith is denying them. All of them. Or at least, that’s what his publicist, Heidi Schaeffer, says, and we all know how truthful they are.
Here’s the important part from the Yahoo! Movies article:

Wait, so Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith is NOT going to be the male lead in the upcoming “Karate Kid” remake? Apparently so, or at least according to Pr-Inside, who doesn’t really quote anyone you could call “credible”. According to the site, Smith won’t just be producing the remake, but he’ll also be directing it as well! Now I don’t know about that. Why would Smith direct a remake of an ’80s movie? Even if he was to make it his directorial debut, I mean. It’s not the kind of film a superstar actor chooses to direct. They usually start with something small, something personal, and make their way up to the potential blockbusters. Then again, maybe it’s all true — but I doubt it.

Here’s a question: If you’re going to remake “The Karate Kid”, why in the world would you want to do it with an actual kid — that is, someone who isn’t a teenager as was the case in the original movie starring Ralph Macchio? That’s just stupid. But hey, maybe the answer is simple: Because Will Smith is a big-time movie star, and if you want him to produce your crappy remake, you’re going to let his 9-year old son star in the movie as the Karate Kid, who is actually a kid. Ergh. Nepotism in Hollywood continues to astound.
Anyways, here’s the news from IGN about this sure-to-be craptacular remake:
IGN has been informed by a reliable source that Sony Pictures is developing a remake of The Karate Kid that will be produced by Will Smith’s Overbook Entertainment and Jerry Weintraub. Weintraub also produced the 1984 film, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, and its three sequels.
