Although based upon the manga “Slam Dunk”, “Kung Fu Dunk” is basically an attempt to emulate the success of Hong Kong comedy megastar Stephen Chow’s smash hit “Shaolin Soccer”. A vehicle for popster/actor/director Jay Chou, the film gives him a chance to combine his passions for basketball and martial arts, with director Kevin Chu Yen Ping (known for commercial hits such as “Young Policemen in Love” and “Flying Dagger”) doing his best to lay on the usual Lunar New Year style comedy shenanigans.
The film follows Jay Chou as Fang Shi Jie, a young man who was found abandoned near a basketball court as a baby and who grew up in a mystical though wacky martial arts school. While lounging around the street one night amusing himself by throwing empty cans into rubbish bins, he catches the leering eye of trickster Zhen Li (Eric Tsang, in full-on hyperactive bumbling idiot mode), who attempts to milk money from him by turning [...]

The full trailer for Jay Chou’s “Kung Fu Dunk” has arrived (head on below to see it now if you just can’t wait). The film stars Chou as an orphan turned Shaolin martial artist who somehow ends up playing basketball using his Shaolin skills. The film, rumored to be one of the most expensive to ever come out of Taiwan, co-stars Eric Tsang, Bo-lin Chen and Charlene Choi.
“Kung Fu Dunk” reunites Chou with action director Ching Siu-tung and cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding, the trio having previously worked together on the big-budget Chinese epic “Curse of the Golden Flower”.
It’s scheduled to tip off February 7th, 2008 in Hong Kong.

Here’s your first look at the Jay Chou sports/comedy/special effects extravaganza “Kung Fu Dunk” (aka “Slam Dunk”). It’s really just a teaser, with a quick 30-second look at Chou in a hoodie dunking. The film is based on the comics (or manga) by Takehiko Inoue and stars Taiwanese mega pop star Chou and Charlene Choi. The film revolves around an orphaned boy (played by Chou) who grows up in a kung fu university and becomes a talented basketball player, thanks to the miracles of modern CGI and what have you.
The film seems to be going under the title of “Kung Fu Dunk” in Asia, and “Slam Dunk” for International release sometime in 2008.
Houston Rockets center Yao Ming, a God in China, was supposed to have a cameo in the film, but “supposed” seems to be the operative word. The role played by Charlene Choi was originally offered to two Korean actresses (singer BoA and Yoon Eun Hye) before Choi [...]

News from Cannes is that Emperor Motion Picture has picked up international sales rights for Jay Chou’s upcoming Taiwanese high school action film “Kung Fu Dunk”, formerly called “Slam Dunk”. (The name change was to keep the film from being confused with a comic book of the same name.) The special-effects laden film, budgeted to be the most expensive in Taiwanese history at $10 million or so, is currently shooting in Mainland China before moving back to Taiwan. Information about the film is hard to find, but I did find a couple of things…
This guy knows something:
[Kung Fu Dunk] incoporates Kung-Fu, sports, [and] is the process of how a hip-hop styled boy practices his “Bull Fight” on the basketball court.
Yeah, I really have no idea what that means, either.
But suffice it to say the film is apparently about a kid who loves basketball (Chou is an admitted basketball-holic) and ends up using kung fu on the court, sort of [...]
