Who says it’s all about the kids? The weekend box office proves that adult moviegoers still have some clout, as they flocked to see Spike Jonze’s adaptation of “Where the Wild Things Are” to the tune of $32.5 million, according to studio estimates. The equally adult “Law Abiding Citizen”, starring Gerard Butler as a vengeful father who takes his vengeance out on the city of Philadelphia and Jamie Foxx also scored well in its debut, clearing out $21 million in change. Both films successfully fought of middling reviews (and mostly negative reviews for “Citizen”) to hit just the right note in their respective debuts.
Meanwhile, the big news is that Oren Peli’s little horror movie that could took in a whopping $20 million in its fourth week of release, the first week where the $15,000 dollar movie was expanded into 760 theaters for the first time. The film has done so well ($33.7 million so far from very limited screenings in [...]

“Law Abiding Citizen” posits that age-old question: if the system failed you, and you had the wherewithal to make it happen, would you blow it all up and start over? Okay, so the question doesn’t quite go like that, but it’s close enough. In the case of Kurt Wimmer’s “Citizen”, the answer seems to be: Hell Yeah. And then some.
The film stars Gerard Butler as Clyde Shelton, one of those mild-mannered family man types who one day realizes there are bad guys out there when two criminal lowlifes break into his home and proceed to brutalize, rape, and then kill his wife and daughter. Clyde survives to see the killers caught, only to witness the more reprehensible half of the criminal pair get off with a light sentence thanks to a plea deal with young wheeling and dealing D.A. Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx). Clyde is, understandably, perturbed. Ten years later, Clyde returns on the scene and exacts brutal revenge on [...]

Let him out, or he’s gonna kill everyone. That sounds simple enough, right? Check out two more clips from “Law Abiding Citizen”, opening later this Friday. The film stars Jamie Foxx as a slick D.A. who goes up against Gerard Butler as a slick, vindictive sociopath who would like to teach all of us a lesson. In death! Muahahahaha! Ahem. Anyways, the first clip, which showed up on YouTube, is two and a half minutes long and features a lively debate between our two stars, while the second one comes courtesy of Overture Films.
Starring Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, Bruce McGill, Colm Meaney, Leslie Bibb, Michael Irby, Regina Hall, and Viola Davis, and directed by F. Gary Gray.

With their thriller set to hit theaters next week, Overture Films has released a new batch of clips from the F. Gary Gray-directed and Kurt Wimmer-scripted revenge thriller “Law Abiding Citizen”. The film stars Jamie Foxx as a slick D.A. and Gerard Butler as one pissed off citizen turned brilliant sociopath killer. Check out a healthy batch of clips from the movie below.
Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is an upstanding family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice.

Color me uber excited about F. Gary Gray’s “Law Abiding Citizen”. And it has nothing to do with the stars, although having Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx fronting your movie, admittedly, ain’t such a bad thing to have. But the premise is just killer, and I can’t wait to root for the bad guy. Check out two clips and a new batch of images from the movie below.
Law Abiding Citizen is a thriller about a brilliant sociopath who orchestrates a series of high-profile murders that grip the city of Philadelphia – all from inside his jail cell – and the prosecutor assigned to his case who realizes he is the only one who can end the reign of terror.
Starring Gerard Butler, Leslie Bibb, Jamie Foxx, Bruce McGill, Viola Davis, Colm Meaney, Michael Kelly, Regina Hall, Christian Stolte, and directed by F. Gary Gray.
Get some vengeance October 16, 2009.

“Citizen” gets revenge October 16, and “Saw VI” starts buzzing again October 23.

Is it wrong to root for the bad guy? Gerard Butler’s character doesn’t start off as the bad guy, but boy, by the one minute mark in this trailer for the movie, he turns into Hannibal Lecter’s better looking cousin or something. Check out the first trailer for Butler and Jamie Foxx’s “Law Abiding Citizen”. I have to admit, I was expecting kind of a run-of-the-mill thriller, but boy was I wrong. I certainly wasn’t expecting something that looked like “Saw” crossed with “Silence of the Lambs”! Good stuff, real good stuff.

For a film with two A-list stars attached, F. Gary Gray’s “Law Abiding Citizen” seems destined to sneak its way into theaters before disappearing completely. The film has a pretty good premise, and here are two posters for it via director Gray’s Twitter page, which he released last week but, well, like the movie itself, no one really took notice.
Ten years after his wife and daughter are brutally murdered, a man returns to extract justice from the assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case against their killers. His vengeance threatens not only the man who allowed mercy to supersede justice, but also the system and the city that made it so.
Starring Gerard Butler, Michael Gambon, Leslie Bibb, Jamie Foxx, Josh Stewart, Regina Hall, Bruce McGill, Christian Stolte, Viola Davis, Colm Meaney, Michael Kelly, and directed by F. Gary Gray.
Get some law October 16, 2009.

I haven’t seen them before, so I’m going with new. They’re said to be behind-the-scenes pics, but they also look very polish, so none of that telephoto stuff. Also, there are some new pics of Angelina Jolie and Liev Schreiber on the set of their new spy thriller “Salt”. Looks like Angie’s got her hands full with the NYPD.
In “Salt”, Jolie plays a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian spy, forcing her to flee and try to prove her innocence. This, apparently, involves lots of wigs.
In “Law Abiding Citizen”, Gerard Butler is an Everyday guy who decides to take out his frustrations with the justice system on the city and the District Attorney (played by Jamie Foxx) who struck a plea bargain to free his wife’s killers.

Western fans will recognize Gambon as the greedy rancher who shot it out with Kevin Costner and Boss Spearman in “Open Range”, while Leslie Bibb was recently seen in “Iron Man” and the horror flick “Midnight Meat Train”; Colm Meaney (left) has been in every movie ever made, including not one but two Star Trek series, while Theresa Randle was last spotted hanging out with those “Bad Boys”.
Plot-wise from THR:
“Citizen” is set in motion when a district attorney orchestrates a plea bargain that sets free the killers of another man’s family. The aggrieved victim then seeks personal justice from the D.A.

After director Frank Darabont (”The Mist”) suddenly realized that his new movie with Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, the crime thriller “Law Abiding Citizen”, was not, in fact, based on a short story by Stephen King as he had been told by producers, he immediately panicked and jumped ship, leaving the spot open for “A Man Apart” director F. Gary Gray. Okay, so maybe that wasn’t the reason Darabont abandoned “Citizen” faster than Paris Hilton dropping to her knees at the promise of a photoshoot, but for the purposes of this post, let’s just go with it.
THR has your “Citizen” news:
Darabont recently fell off the film, setting off a scurrying among agents and directors to sign on to “Citizen,” which will star Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler and is a priority for startup shingle the Film Department. John Singleton was interested, but Gray landed the gig.
Darabont co-wrote the script, but creative differences with producers led to a parting of the [...]

Looks like Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx’s criminal thriller “Law Abiding Citizen” will just have to find themselves a new director. Or at least, that’s the rumor from Aint-it-Cool-News, who says that Frank Darabont (”The Mist”, “The Shawshank Redemption”) is now “out” as director of the movie, and that it “ended ugly” to boot. Which reminds me, the last time something ended ugly for me, I got locked out of my apartment and had to pick my pajamas and dirty underoos off the front lawn while my neighbors snickered at me behind my back. Hopefully it didn’t get that ugly when Darabont ended his relationship with the movie. And who knows if this is even true?
Says AICN:
Hey, guys. I have an extremely reliable source who says ‘[Frank] Darabont is out of LAW ABIDING CITIZEN and I mean really out. It apparently ended ugly.’ So take that and do what you will.
Darabont had been connected to the movie for the [...]

Man, I can’t figure out what Frank Darabont’s upcoming thriller “Law Abiding Citizen” is all about. What we do know for sure is that Gerard Butler will be the star, and now Jamie Foxx is in negotiations to star opposite him. The story’s original plot had Butler, playing a crusading D.A., fighting a criminal mastermind who, despite being locked away in prison, still manages to run the city from his cell. Now I’m hearing that Foxx will be playing a “traumatized” victim of the American justice system, who decides to become a vigilante and hatches a plot to get back at all the people who killed his wife and child when the justice system failed them. It could very well be that the two plots are entwined, but it sure doesn’t sound like it.
THR has more on the casting and “new” (?) plot:
Written by Kurt Wimmer and Darabont, the script follows a successful assistant D.A. (Butler) who finds himself at [...]

Frank Darabont (pictured, left) can’t seem to stay out of prison. After prison tales “Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile”, you’d think the man would realize prison is a place he’d like to steer clear off. Not so much, because Darabont is scheduled to return to prison in August of this year to make “Law Abiding Citizen”, a thriller starring Gerard Butler (pictured, below) as a city official who must stop an incarcerated criminal mastermind who, despite his situation, still runs the city beyond the walls of his jail cell. Who says prison stifles one’s ambitions?
Screen Daily has the breakdown:
Production is set to begin on August 18 in Detroit on the low-$40m range story of a criminal mastermind who controls a city from the confines of his prison cell. Butler will play the prosecutor who stands in his way.
But Variety, in their write-up for the film a few months back, has more of a twist to the storyline:
Their first project [...]
