Am I excited that the guy responsible for “Cloverfield” is helming the remake of Tomas Alfredson’s “Let the Right One In?” Not really. I suppose, if you’re illiterate or have something against Swedish cinema, the Americanized version is a good thing, as it allows you to experience this strangely heartwarming vampire story without having to listen to a foreign language while reading all of those unsightly subtitles. My attempt to disguise my bitterness towards this project has ultimately failed, though I will try my best to reserve judgment until I’ve seen the finished product for myself. If it ends up being another “Quarantine,” I will weep. Openly.
In case you missed it, here’s the premise:
An alienated 12-year-old boy befriends a mysterious young newcomer in his small New Mexico town and discovers an unconventional path to adulthood.
The kind individuals operating Horror-Movies.ca recently revealed the first poster for the upcoming production. You can check it out below.

Get it? Because one of the actors signed up for the Matt Reeves-directed (and J.J. Abrams-produced) remake of the Swedish vampire horror movie “Let the Right One In” (since retitled “Let me in” and re-set in a sleepy Colorado town) is Kodi Smit-McPhee, who stars in “The Road”? And the other kid is Chloe Moretz, Hit-Girl herself from “Kick-Ass”? But I digress.
The official word is that Aussie kid Smit-McPhee, who earlier this year talked about auditioning for the role of a bullied boy who befriends a vampire, has landed the gig of Owen. Moretz, who is getting mighty bloody in her young movie career, will play Abby, the new girl in town who turns out to be a vampire. She teaches Owen how to fight back against the bullies, with bloody results.
Adult guy Richard Jenkins is also in line to play Abby’s adult ward, a character named Hakan in the Tomas Alfredson original. The remake will be based on [...]

According to the blokes over at Moviehole, young actor Kodi Smit-McPhee, who will be seen as Viggo Mortensen’s young son in the post-apocalyptic “The Road” very soon, tells an Aussie newspaper that he’s auditioned and is up for the role of the 12-year old lead in Matt Reeves’ remake of the Swedish horror movie “Let The Right One In”, since retitled “Let Me In”.
The Swedish original, based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, was directed by Tomas Alfredson, and follows a bullied 12-year old boy who makes friends with his new next door neighbor — a young girl who just happens to be an old vampire. You know, that old story. I remember when I made friends with Bigfoot. As it turns out, he was just misunderstood, though that doesn’t really explain why he had a pile of bones in his closet, but never you mind that.
The American remake, to be directed by Reeves and produced by J.J. [...]

The LATimes currently has a feature on director Matt Reeves, who first stomped onto the big screen with the monster movie “Cloverfield” for producer J.J. Abrams. Reeves’ latest is adapting the Swedish supernatural thriller “Let the Right One In”, about a vampire who befriends a bullied 12-year old boy. The remake has since been retitled “Let Me In”, a more faithful translation of the original novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist from which the first movie was based, says the article.
Reeves says about the original:
“I was just hooked. I was so taken with the story and I had a very personal reaction. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror.”
According to the article, Reeves is currently in his second draft of the script, and is getting ready to shoot the film in cold climates like the original movie. He also says that [...]

In case you haven’t heard, Tomas Alfredson’s tale of creepy child vampires is getting an American remake by non other than the Bad Robot boys, J.J. Abrams and his “Cloverfield” director, Matt Reeves. As the film gears up to shoot, the title has been changed from “Let the Right One In” to “Let Me In”, because, well, it’s two letters shorter, ain’t it?
The news comes from Bloody-Disgusting, which quotes Production Weekly:
Production Weekly reports that filming is scheduled to begins this May for the film that follows Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire.
I know she’s a little older now, but Dakota Fanning as the child vampire would fit like a glove. Either her, or one of the Olsen Twins. You can’t get any creepier than those two choices right there, folks.
Get your feel of child vampires, bullies, and possibly lots of blood in [...]

So wait, if the girl vampire in Tomas Alfredson’s “Let the Right One In” is actually a very old person who just happens to be trapped in the body of a 12-year-old girl, and she puts the moves on a 12-year-old boy, does that mean the vampire is, you know, technically a pervert who only goes for kids? I’m just saying. Anyways, here’s a red band trailer for Alfredson’s “Let the Right One In”, which seems to be getting a surprising PR push lately. It makes you wonder if this was the plan by the film’s U.S. distributor all along, or if the announced remake by J.J. Abrams and company has increased the original’s visibility. If the latter is true, then it’s ironic that Alfredson is adamantly opposed to the remake, and has said so repeatedly, and now seems to be benefiting from it.
A fragile, anxious boy, 12-year-old Oskar is regularly bullied by his stronger classmates but never strikes back. [...]

When it was announced that Matt Reeves, who burst onto the scene with “Cloverfield”, was helming a remake of the Swedish vampire flick “Let the Right One In” for J.J. Abrams, I think most fanboys on the net were kind of interested. Or at least, it interested enough of them to go out and take a look at the original, which, you would think, is probably a good thing, commercially speaking for all parties involved. Not so much, says Tomas Alfredson, the director of the Swedish original, who is not only not sold on the idea of someone remaking his film, but sounds positively pissed off that it’s actually happening. Which begs the question: Didn’t he own the rights to his own movie? Well probably not. As with Hollywood, no doubt the producers are the Kings of all the film rights.
Dark Horizon quotes MovieZine:
In an interview with MovieZine, Alfredson says “Remakes should be made of movies that aren’t very good, [...]

If you haven’t seen the original, or even knows it existed, then you probably won’t care that an American movie studio is once again mining foreign territories for a horror movie. This time they’ve thankfully avoided the Asian continent (seriously, how many times can you stand vengeful chicks with long black hair skulking about in the cinemas? it’s getting ridiculous), and gone over to Sweden instead, where “Cloverfield” producer J.J. Abrams picked up the remake rights for the vampire flick “Let the Right One In” many moons ago. He’s now handed the project over to Matt Reeves, director of “Cloverfield”, to write and direct.
THR has your dark tale:
The Swedish horror film, “Lat den ratte komma in,” about a bullied boy whose desire for revenge becomes intertwined with his growing love for a girl who happens to be a vampire, began showing at festivals at the beginning of the year.
It’s not even a year old, and it’s cleaning up at the film festival circuit, so of course some Hollywood bigwig will want to remake it. I’m talking about the Swedish horror vampire flick “Let the Right One In”, which according to Bloody-Disgusting, is currently being eyed for a remake by none other than J.J. Abrams, head honcho of Bad Robot Productions, the same people behind “Cloverfield”. Apparently Abrams has yet to secured the remake rights, but let’s face it, with Abrams’ cache and the promise of mega bucks via the remake rights, the original filmmakers are going to fall over themselves to sign the rights away.
More:
Today we learned that JJ Abrams’ company, Bad Robot, is making a play at the remake rights. Although the company behind Coverfield has yet to gain the rights, it looks like this is a possible home for the US version of the film. Magnet Releasing has acquired domestic home video rights for the pic [...]
