Love him or hate him, no Mel Gibson means no “Lethal Weapon 5″. Martin Riggs is, after all, the lethal weapon of the title. Without him, you’d just have, well, “Old Black Guy with a Mustache”. According to Moviehole, who recently put in a phone call to “Lethal Weapon 5″ writer and would-be director Shane Black, Gibson, who in the past has considered coming back, now seems certain he wants no part of it, and is even refusing to take calls from producer Joel Silver who is trying to lure him back.
Says Moviehole:
A contact at Warner Bros agreed with Black, saying “That one is as good as dead. It won’t happen. Which is a pity” he said, adding that Black’s screenplay – which reportedly involved Riggs and Martaugh teaming with the latter detective’s grown-up son, now also a copper, to catch a scumbag, was “fabulous. A much better send off than [Number 4]”.
Rumor has it that Gibson’s lack of interest [...]

Well, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover may not quite be “too old for this shit”, but apparently that wasn’t the only reason why franchise star Mel Gibson might not do the fifth installment of the buddy cop series. According to Richard Donner, who directed all previous four “Lethal Weapon” films, the fifth movie is dead — likely because he, Donner, had been removed from the director’s chair in favor of original “Weapon” writer/creator Shane Black, which may or may not have caused Mel Gibson to walk away from the project completely. Or at least, that’s what Donner says, and according to this LA Times article, he’s kind of accurate. Kind of.
“Mel turned it down,” Donner said. “I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn’t involved. Knowing Mel, I would like to think that. Would that be the kind of thing he does? It sure would be.”
I checked with Gibson’s camp on Sunday night and while [...]

Will Mel Gibson please kill this franchise or agree to do it already? My goodness, weren’t Murtaugh and Riggs supposed to have retired to rocking chairs on their porches after 1998’s “Lethal Weapon 4″? Apparently not, because everyone seems to want to make a fifth movie. Everyone, that is, except Mel Gibson, who according to Entertainment Weekly, has yet to say Yay or Nay to Shane Black’s treatment for a fifth installment in the lethalest of the buddy cop movies. Or at least, it was pretty lethal back in the ’80s. Not so much nowadays. According to the mag, the fifth flick would still focus on Murtaugh and Riggs, but would also “introduce a pair of young NYPD cops” into the equation, probably because in their current twilight years, Murtaugh and Riggs can only be counted on to yell at kids to get off their lawns. You know those damn kids and their fancy bicycle watchamallits.

So there’s this story on ComingSoon that Shane Black, the writer of the first “Lethal Weapon” movie (with story credit on “Lethal Weapon 2″) is currently writing a script for “Lethal Weapon 5″, and that he’s talked to all the principals from the franchise, and that everyone seems eager to return. And why not? Mel Gibson is still trying to shake off the shame of his DUI arrest and anti-semantic rant, while Danny Glover is, well, sure, he’s working steadily, but when was the last time you said to your buddy, “Hey, Buddy, let’s go see this Danny Glover movie!” And what was producer Joel Silver’s last hit? “Speed Racer”?
Here’s Comingsoon with the breakdown on the story, which seems pretty legit, unless, of course, TrackingB is full of shit:
Hollywood tracking board TrackingB.com reports that Shane Black, who wrote the first Lethal Weapon movie, has written a spec script for Lethal Weapon 5 without telling anyone. The site adds that [...]

It appears Warner Bros. has seen the second coming — of aging action stars, that is, and they’re looking to their own aging action stars, specifically Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, to resurrect the “Lethal Weapon” franchise with a fourth sequel. According to the franchise’s only director, Richard Donnor, a “great script” is already done, but they just need Mel Gibson to sign on. Apparently Gibson really didn’t want to do part 4, but ended up doing it anyway; and he was adamant about not doing part 5, but apparently he seems to be warming to the idea. Maybe.
Moviehole had this:
Probably no surprise to hear, but there’s more Lethal talk. Apparently the whole trend of resurrecting old action heroes, like John McClane (in “Live Free or Die Hard”) and John Rambo has spurred them on. Twelve months after Gibson turned down the offer to do a fifth one, they’re trying again. Something might have changed – guess his career is [...]
