It occurred to me while reading the recent Empire article that the X-Men universe will never concede itself to the reboot syndrome simply because of the sheer number of stories that can be told; they can go on indefatigably, one (or more) for each character, as long as audience attention is elastic and unfrayed. If we peer into the near future, there is already scattered across the cinematic milieu X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2, X-Men Origins: Deadpool, X-Men Origins: Magneto, and X-Men First Class (which may or may not officially be X-Men 4). Producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who has been intimately involved with the entire X-Men film franchise, has a broad vision outlined for each of these.
There is far too much information to sum up here, and so the article is the only reprieve. It contains almost a withering amount of information. And yet, in spite of the recent misfires, it’s hard not to be excited by the potential that Donner [...]

Fantasy usually attracts people whose imaginations are way more interesting than real life. Far from being eccentric, there is virtue in the way they spin together entire worlds out of pure ideas. It’s a quality that The Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro has in abundance, which Ian McKellen discussed with Empire, along with the progress of the script:
“The scripts for the two films will be delivered very soon,” he revealed. “Then they’ll be budgeted, and then they’ll be cast. And they’ll be going when they’ve always said they would be, which is next spring – March or April. Guillermo even told me at one point, ‘We’re going to film for 383 days.’ He’s got that artistic autism! Jackson’s the same; they’re very, very, very alike. They also very different, but they’ve so much in common. They both can’t stand Hollywood and have wonderful imaginations, and they’re both obsessed with gore and fantasy. Both of them laugh a great deal. Guillermo’s [...]

If comic book films are going to continue to be recycled and reimagined, they must be less reverential, more innovative, more relevant; Batman Begins signaled a shift in this direction. James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, the upcoming Ninja Assassins), who is rumored to be under consideration to direct the next Superman, wants to bring that idea to the Man of Steel. First Showing interviews McTeigue about his vision, if he is to assume the director’s chair:
“I’m just saying that I think there are some things that you could excise from the Superman mythology that people would get into it, if you took the world that he was in and changed that a bit, and maybe even project that into the future a bit. I think you don’t really have to play into the origin story anymore. I think there’s a whole bunch of things you could do to make that film more alive and exciting again.”
There is always the danger [...]

Of all the possible X-Men-related movies that FOX is currently looking at right now, from Ryan Reynolds in a “Deadpool” spin-off movie, an “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” sequel that would take Wolvie to Japan, and a “X-Men: First Class” (aka “X-Men: 90210″) movie, a “Magneto” origins story is definitely not very high on my list of priorities right now, and I’m pretty sure it’s not on a whole lot of people’s priority list, either. If all else fails, maybe the Master of Magnetism will finally get his own movie, but I wouldn’t hold my breath, kids.
Why? Because a movie about an old guy who can control metal with his mind (and that will definitely have to tackle the uber depressing subject of the Holocaust) isn’t going to sell nearly as many tickets as an “X-Men: First Class” movie about a bunch of superpowered kids getting into superpowered mischief. That’s just the cold hard truth.
But hey, what do I know. David [...]

Bryan Singer kinda wishes he had stayed onboard the X-Men train and directed the third installment of the trilogy, 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand”, which went to the much-maligned Brett Ratner after Singer jumped ship to direct the underperforming “Superman Returns”. I happened to like “Superman Returns” more than the average comic book geek, and to be perfectly honest with you, I didn’t care very much for “The Last Stand”, not because Ratner had directed it (as seems to be the case with many a fanboys), but just because, well, it wasn’t all that entertaining or interesting. Anyways, while out doing the promo rounds for his WWII drama “Valkyrie”, Bryan Singer talked a bit about “Superman Returns” and the possibility of returning to the X-Men franchise.
Says Singer to Total Film Magazine (via):
Asked whether he wished he had directed X-Men: The Last Stand, he admitted he had that feeling “before I was watching it, during watching it, after watching it.”
“It’s weird [...]

You can’t keep them muties down, what with their healing factors, laser beams out of eyes, and TK’ing and such. During an appearance on Fox movie Channel’s Life after Film School (I haven’t a clue what that is, but apparently it’s some kind of TV show), “X-Men” producer Lauren Shuler Donner talked about the plans for the new “X-Men” movie, tentatively called “X-Men: First Class” (aka “X-Men 4″), which will follow younger versions of the familiar X-Men characters we’re used to (Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Beast, etc). And what then? Maybe spin-off movies, ala Wolverine, perhaps?
Says Shuler (via Comics Continuum):
“It is the first class of Xavier’s school, way back when, so it’s young Scott, young Jean, young Beast and that’ll be really fun… I think (the plan) is to follow some of the characters into their own stories, and weave them back into the X-Men world. And hopefully First Class will become its own franchise and we can follow them [...]

Haven’t heard a lot about the “X-Men” spin-off movie about Magneto for a while, which is probably on purpose. The Powers That Be are probably waiting to see if the Wolverine spin-off sells before they start on the Magneto version, and all this pre-production work on the movie, such as sketch drawings and CGI prep work are just that — preparation. But in any case, it’s fun to speculate, isn’t it? And the current speculation is who, besides Magneto, will appear? According to one report, the Beast. Or maybe Nightcrawler. What? Read on.
Latino Review has the word on a possible Beast appearance in “Magneto” via a trip to the special effects shop that did work on “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”:
But I also noticed a photograph of a young looking Beast leaping through the air. Not a drawing, although it could have been computer generated, but an actual photo.
“What’s this?”
“This is young Beast from the prequel they’re gonna be doing. [...]

David S. Goyer is one busy man. No, let me rephrase that: I don’t know how anyone can work as hard or on as many projects at once the way David Goyer does. I swear there must be two or three Davids out there running around scripting “Magneto” and “Jumper” and scouting locations for “Magneto” while at the same time plotting the details of the latest Invisible Man movie. The guy is, in a word, prolific. In fact, if you looked up “prolific” in the dictionary, it could very well be David Goyer’s bald head staring back at you with a big, fanboy grin on his face.
Now David Goyer has talked to Wizard Mag about his upcoming projects, with emphasis on the “s” behind “project”.
About “Magneto”, which he will be writing and directing:
“We’re scouting and budgeting now. It’s the origins of the X-Men with Magneto and Charles Xavier. We’ve done some scouts and it mostly takes place in Europe and [...]

You can’t keep the Master of Magnetism down, as the X-Men certainly found out in the comic books and in the movies, as Magneto (played in the film by Ian McKellen) kept coming back again and again. Producer Avi Arad recently talked with MTV about the upcoming “Magneto” spin-off movie, and according to him, the script by writer (and director) David Goyer (“Batman Begins”) will follow Magneto as a young man from a Jewish concentration camp during World War II and to what happens to him (and changes him) after that. This is, Avi points out, an Origins Story for Magneto, which means by the end of the movie his experiences will have turned him into the militant sourpuss that he’s become in all three “X-Men” films.
Any chances of a cameo by everyone’s favorite half-naked mutant, Mystique?
Given Magneto is already the head of the militant mutant organization known as The Brotherhood in the first film, will the prequel detail the [...]
