Unfortunately for Mark Wahlberg, the only pain Max brought to the big screen was, well, the pain of another box office flop. Which is too bad, as I thought the film stuck pretty closely to the “spirit” of the videogames, except for my much-documented deriding of Jackie from That 70’s Show in the role of Mona Sax. The filmmakers couldn’t have fubar the casting of that character any worst than they did. With the right actress, Mona Sax could have become a great character, but instead — well, what you got was what you got, which wasn’t a whole lot. The DVD version of “Max Payne” arrives on DVD January 20, 2009, and as is the fashion nowadays, there will be an “Unrated” version that will come with a whopping three minutes of additional footage. Wow. Three whole minutes of more Max Payne and a badly miscast Mila Kunis. Get in line now, kids! Anyhoo. DVD specs and cover art [...]

The reviews for “Max Payne” have begun to surface throughout the week, and they haven’t been kind. As of this writing, the film has a lowly 17% freshness rating among critics over at RottenTomatoes. Ouch. So does this mean no “Max Payne 2″? Duh. Bad movie reviews mean nothing if the box office is gold, and considering how well the games sold, “Max Payne” the movie should do reasonably decent first-week business. What happens after that is anybody’s guess. Plus, John Moore’s videogame-to-movie shoot-a-thon already has a wink and a nod towards a sequel tack onto the end of the film, well after the credits have rolled, for those of you who like to sit through impossibly long, and never-seem-to-end closing credits. Unless, you know, you have a life or something.
Variety’s Justin Chang thought the movie had promise:
Before it derails with a climax that seems to have borrowed a few scenes from the “The Incredible Hulk,” “Max Payne” strives valiantly [...]

Apparently both “Max Payne” and “Punisher: War Zone” are so punishingly violent and brutal that the MPAA has slapped both films with an “R” rating. Fans of both the Punisher and Max Payne should be rejoicing at this news, although I’m not sure if “Max Payne” director John Moore would share your enthusiasm, since the director has gone on record (and some would say, above and beyond) stating that he desperately wants a PG-13 rating for his movie. I suppose you could now say that John Moore is in … payne? Ahem. Sorry.
THR lists “Punisher: War Zone” as R for:
Rated for pervasive strong brutal violence, language and some drug use.
While “Max Payne” got slapped with the R for:
Rated for violence, drug content, some sexuality and brief strong language.
See, John Moore? The MPAA has already thrown down the gauntlet. Now don’t you think it’s time to go back to the editing room and include that nude scene of Mila Kunis that [...]

Think of movie producer Scott Faye as the opposite of Uwe Boll — a man who likes videogames, likes making movies out of them, but whereas Uwe Boll’s videogame movies tend to, er, suck donkey balls, Faye seems to know how to make the best videogame movie he can. Or at least, he talks a mighty good game. In an interview with gaming site Kotaku, former Dark Horse comic book publisher Faye updates the masses on the long-delayed “Alice McGee” movie (it’s still happening), a possible movie version of the Duke Nuke’Em videogame (the strippers are coming too, right?), and a possible sequel to “Max Payne” (if the first one is a hit, that is).
About the possible “Max Payne” sequel:
“What more do you need to hear than Mark say he’d be interested in doing a sequel,” said Faye. “I would imagine if the film is successful that there’d be a sincere desire to do a sequel. There have been no [...]

Director John Moore, the man behind the upcoming Mark Wahlberg videogame movie “Max Payne”, is more than a tad peeved at the MPAA, the industry’s powerful organization that dishes out those ratings to your favorite movies. The issue? The cut of “Max Payne” that Moore turned in got an R-Rating for, one presumes, excessive violence. But wait, here’s the kicker — John Moore DIDN’T want an R-rating! Wha…? Did John Moore even saw the trailer for his own movie? Methinks when Mark Wahlberg went on the publicity round bragging about the violent nature of his movie, he wasn’t exactly thinking PG-13 cartoon violence.
Here’s what Moore told game site Dasgamer about the rating, and why he’s so pissed off:
We’re right in the middle of it now. We’re suffering from what I call Batman blowback. The Motion Picture Association of America gave The Dark Knight a PG-13 rating and basically sucked Warner Bros. cock. I have a serious amount of issues with [...]

If you’ve played the Max Payne games, then you know that director John Moore is putting that big budget that comes with having Mark Wahlberg as a star to work. I mean, wow, this thing looks just awesome. Even if it turns out to be complete shit, with an incomprehensible story, the visuals will be worth the $10 bucks I shell out for this. Yeah, I still don’t buy Mila Kunis as a machinegun packing badass, but you know, I can overlook that little ditty as long as the rest of the film is as good as it looks in this latest trailer for “Max Payne”. Check it out and call me in the morning.

Initially, my intention was to make fun of Mark Wahlberg with this post — you know, get in a couple of rib kicks for his grand statement that Max Payne (a character based on a friggin’ videogame) was “the most complex character” he had ever played, and how Payne is the baddest mofo to ever walk the Earth. Yes, even a badder mofo than the baddest mofo of them all, Samuel L. Jackson. (Though he didn’t mention Sam The Man’s name, I’m assuming Mark would include the Jackster in that list of not-badder-than-my-guy. Or perhaps I’m just reaching for a story here, and this is the end result. Either/or.) But of course, I reversed field almost immediately, since, well, when was the last time you heard an actor promote a movie with this much gusto?
Wahlberg waxes philosophical on playing Max Payne to MTV:
“The only thing that’s not excellent about my performance is that I don’t swear, but I don’t need [...]

Two new posters for the Mark Wahlberg action-fest “Max Payne” (based on the videogames of the same name) have popped up online. Nothing overly new, more iterations of the same stuff you’ve seen before — Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne, holding a shotgun, looking like he’s about to pop some caps in some fools’ asses.
Based on the popular videogame of the same name, “Max Payne” stars Mark Wahlberg as Payne, a former DEA agent whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy, and Mila Kunis as Mona Sax, a mysterious assassin out to avenge her sister’s death, who teams up with Payne to go after the same people.

What were you dudes smoking during the casting sessions?), the trailer for “Max Payne” kinda sold the movie for me. This thing looks great, and no, I’m not going to label it as another “Matrix” clone. I know it’s hard for you kids out there to believe, but there WERE other movies made before your precious “Matrix”. And besides, if “Max Payne” is a rip off of anything, it’s all of John Woo’s Hong Kong films, something that the game owns up to.

Via the boys over at Latino Review, 20th Century Fox has shipped over three brand spanking new posters for two of their upcoming movies — the Mark Wahlberg shoot’em up “Max Payne” and the Megan Fox slut’em up “Jennifer’s Body”. Basically, The Punisher without Thomas Jane. The movie version of the popular game will star Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, who is way too short for the role of Mona Sax, an assassin who assists Payne in his quest for vengeance.
The article is actually a pretty short one (an excerpt below), but it does come with a new image, so, uh, I guess that’s cool.
Wahlberg concedes he was not a Payne gamer but says one of his assistants “plays it all the time, and I probably watched him play more than I should. It’s got a story line more complex than most video-game movies.”

If you’ve seen the first “Max Payne” trailer and didn’t loved it to death, then these promo shots of Mark Wahlberg posing as Max Payne won’t do a whole lot for you. (And if you haven’t seen the trailer yet, head over here.) These photos showed up last week all over the net, but I’ve been waiting for bigger versions to come out to make a gallery out of them. Alas, that doesn’t seem forthcoming anytime soon, so here you go. Groovy little “Max Payne” promo shots via FirstShowing.

After months of wondering if the Max Payne games could be properly translated to the big screen (and indeed, for anyone who has played it, they will know that the games are VERY translatable into cinematic form), the answer is a resounding: HELL YEAH. And while I still have problems casting the diminutive Mila Kunis in the role of Mona Sax, one of those characters that needs to be tall, leggy, and deadly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne, former law enforcement dude turned mob killing machine dude. This guy is going to make The Punisher look like, well, the Punisher from the 2004 movie, who went around sunny Florida setting up the bad guys with fake fire hydrants and other nonsensical pussy shit like that.

According to Mark Wahlberg, his role in “Max Payne” is one of the most draining, emotionally charged role he’s ever had to play onscreen. To date. Yup, even more so than he did on “The Departed” or “Boogie Nights”. That’s saying something, considering Mark went from an Oscar-nominated role in “The Departed” to being universally derided in the recent “The Happening”. But “Max Payne” would seem to be more in Wahlberg’s bailiwick — a movie about a guy with a gun who likes to shoot said gun at people trying to shoot him.
Wahlberg tells MTV:
“Two weeks out I was just dying… I wanted my life back.
I read the script and said either somebody got really creative or it’s actually more like a movie than most games…
Max Payne is not a one-trick pony. It’s probably one of the edgier roles I’ve played but also the most layered. Here’s a very happy guy who worked a dismal job, had a [...]

The last time we saw Max Payne, Mark Wahlberg (as the titular character) was in full character and getting into an limo in the rain. Today, new images from the film’s set have surfaced, showing more of Wahlberg in the rain (apparently it rains a lot in “Max Payne”) and some nice little extras, such as an alleyway filled with body bags. I still don’t like the casting of Kunis as Mona Sax, mostly because Kunis is a midget and Sax is not, but what are you gonna do, right?

Wahlberg plays Payne, and Mila Kunis plays sexy assassin Mona Sax. John Moore (”Flight of the Phoenix”) directs.

Ah, man, I was kind of hoping the casting of Mila Kunis (pictured, left) in “Max Payne” didn’t mean she was going to play the gun-toting, sexy assassin Mona Sax, but apparently that is very much the case. I like Kunis, and she’s sexy when she has to be, but she’s just too diminutive for Mona Sax! Anyways, Kunis fills in other details about the movie, like how “Max Payne” will be a combination of the two games, and the revenge-driven plot. Also, Chris O’Donnell has been announced as joining the cast, playing an “executive” name Jason Colvin.
More:
“For anyone who’s got concerns about Mark [Wahlberg] playing Max Payne, he’s amazing in it. Great actor, great guy,” she insists. “I play [an assassin] called Mona Sax who accuses him of murdering her sister and later comes to find out it wasn’t him. They kind of get together and try to figure out who was responsible for the murder of his wife [...]

Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming movie adaptation of the Rockstar Game “Max Payne” gets another castmember — former Stargate SG1 bigwig Beau Bridges, father of the Bridges boys, who joins the cast as “B.B. Hensley, a former cop and mentor figure to Max Payne, who helps him track down a cunning, ruthless killer.” You know, that name doesn’t even ring a bell with me. It’s been ages since I played the game, but I don’t recall a character name B.B. Then again, as I said, it’s been ages.
More:
Principal photography began March 3 in Toronto on the John Moore-directed film. Beau Thorne penned the script.
Mark Wahlberg stars as Payne, a maverick cop determined to track down those responsible for the murder of his partner and family.
Mila Kunis will play an assassin who teams with Payne to avenge her sister’s death.
Mark Wahlberg is Max Payne, Mila Kunis is Mona Sax, and now Beau Bridges as B.B. (Wow, that’s also the initial of Beau Bridges. [...]
