In stunning news from the world of moviemaking and International diplomacy, American filmmaker Spike Lee has managed to piss off Italy with his World War II movie, “The Miracle at St. Anna”. At issue is Lee and writer James McBride’s plotting of the film, which has an Italian partisan (the resistance fighters that fought the Nazis and Fascism during World War II) collaborating with the Nazis, thus leading to the 1944 massacre of 560 Italian civilians, a horrific event that is still being felt today. In Spike Lee’s movie, a partisan’s actions lead to the slaughter, and the surviving partisans in Italy, where the film recently showed, are none to please with Mister Spike’s (according to them) revisionist take on the subject.
After the brouhaha, James McBride, the film’s writer, apologized. Sorta. Via Variety:
“This is a fictional story,” McBride said. “The real question for me was how to make ‘St. Anna’ a reveal, because that is the craft of fiction.
“I am [...]

Originally, when Spike Lee spoke up against the lack of black soldiers in World War II movies, igniting a feud with heavyweights the Coens and Clint Eastwood in doing so, you could almost pass it off as Lee doing what he does best — trying to get some free publicity for his own upcoming WWII movie “Miracle at St. Anna”. With the film, about four black soldiers caught behind enemy lines during the war, set for a September 28 release, Lee is once again making noise, this time bemoaning his lot in life, and how The Man is still trying to keep him down. His argument? His “Miracle at St. Anna” is so brilliant (in fact, it might just be the greatest movie ever made, apparently), that the Academy Awards will still find a way to NOT nominate it for an Oscar. Or so says Spike.
He tells King Magazine (named after Spike, the King of Moviemaking, I am told):

Good gracious. Who decided today was the day to dump all of these first-time movie trailers and teasers onto the net? Was there a meeting in Hollywood that I was, once again, not invited to? Anyways, I was this close to calling this post, “Because of Spike Lee’s Big Mouth and Manufactured Feud with Clint Eastwood, We Now Care About The Miracle at St. Anna Movie Trailer”, but that was just way too long, and the last time I tried to cram a title that long into a post header, Berkley, California nearly imploded. You know all that hippie crap that came out of Berkley in the ’60s? Yeah, that was me. My bad.
Four soldiers from the army’s Negro 92nd Division find themselves separated from their unit and behind enemy lines. Risking their lives for a country in which they are treated with less respect than the enemy they are fighting, they discover humanity in the small Tuscan village of [...]

Spike Lee thinks Clint Eastwood is a slave owner, and shouldn’t be telling him to “shut his face”. Or at least, that’s what ABCNews.com reports Lee as saying, in reply to Eastwood’s previous comments, in regard to Lee’s racism-tinted accusations against Eastwood, via black soldiers at Iwo Jima, vis-a-vis Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers” movie. (If all that sounds confusing, read here and here.)
ABCNews.com got this response from Lee:
“First of all, the man is not my father and we’re not on a plantation either,” he told ABCNEWS.com. “He’s a great director. He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it though, I didn’t personally attack him. And a comment like ‘a guy like that should shut his face’ — come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there.”
Lee has a proposal for Eastwood:
“If he wishes, I could assemble African-American men who fought at Iwo Jima and I’d like him to tell [...]

Wow, here’s a shocker: Spike Lee is not happy with a couple of his fellow Hollywood directors, and one reason involves race. The latest targets of the perennially wronged director is Clint Eastwood and the Coen Brothers. Lee took the opportunity to insult the award-winning directors during his news conference in Cannes, where he arrived to promote his WWII movie “Miracle at St. Anna”, the true story of black soldiers in Italy during World War II.
Reuters has the nitty gritty:
Speaking about his World War II drama “Miracle at St. Anna,” Lee said that, unlike the Coens, he was respectful in the way he portrayed death.
“I always treat life and death with respect, but most people don’t,” Lee said at a news conference Tuesday. “Look, I love the Coen brothers; we all studied at NYU. But they treat life like a joke. Ha ha ha. A joke. It’s like, ‘Look how they killed that guy! Look how blood squirts out the [...]

Actor Derek Luke just can’t get enough of the United States Army. Or at least, in the movies, anyway. The actor has signed up to replace Wesley Snipes as the male lead in Spike Lee’s upcoming World War II movie “The Miracle of St. Anna”, playing his second Army character after starring in Robert Redford’s current “Lions for Lambs” War on Terror movie. Snipes had to withdraw from the role because traveling abroad became too difficult, thanks wholly to his current battle with the U.S. Government regarding federal tax-fraud charges, one of those white collar crimes that carries mucho jail sentence if convicted.
More:
Luke, who plays an Army Ranger in Afghanistan in the Robert Redford-directed “Lions for Lambs,” is re-enlisting in the Army, circa WWII, and joins an ensemble that includes John Turturro, James Gandolfini, Michael Ealy, Omar Benson and Tory Kittles.
Luke will play one of four members of the U.S. Army’s all-black 92nd Division who get separated from their [...]

Spike Lee is gearing up for “Miracle at St. Anna”, a $45 million dollar World War II movie about black Americans fighting in Italy. But that’s not the interesting part, it’s this article at Variety, which claims the bold title, “Spike Lee attacks Hollywood films”. Before reading the article, I expected your trademark Spike Lee vicious rant against “Whitey”, but instead it was, well, kind of weak. Here’s what Lee said: “If you look at the history of Hollywood, the black soldiers who fought World War II are totally invisible… This is the paradox: black people who were fighting for democracy but at the same time were second class citizens at home.” Apparently to Variety that’s called “attacking”. Hmm…
Anyways, more from Lee’s Italy trip:
Also on hand at the presser were 82-year-old WWII vet William Perry, a member of a Buffalo Soldiers unit made up of black Americans who fought the Nazis in Italy, and Moreno Costa, an Italian anti-Fascist partisan [...]

The always controversial Spike Lee has another movie planned, this one about black soldiers during World War II. What exactly attracted Lee to the project? Um, because it’s about black soldiers fighting in a war overseas while they were still being segregated by Whitey back home? I mean, come on, that’s drama, baby! Lee says his film will be primarily based on James McBride’s novel “Miracle at St. Anna”, which is about a group of soldiers from the 92nd, all-black Buffalo Division fighting against Nazi occupation in Tuscany, Italy, and the friendship between one of them and a six-year-old Italian orphan.
Lee has never shied away from taking America to task for its racist past, and why should he? It’s really a damn shame what America did to blacks back then, even going so far as to segregate the military into black and white troops.
But of course, then Lee has to go American bashing in this interview and call World [...]
