This reminds me of what happened with “Watchmen”. After years of waiting for someone in Hollywood to finally have the balls to make the movie, the film’s release was threatened with a last-minute lawsuit. In the case of “Mortal Kombat”, the film is just in the scripting stages, but that hasn’t stopped someone from filing a lawsuit anyway. The culprit is a former producer of the movie franchise, who claims his company owns more of “Mortal Kombat” than Midway Games, the creator of the Kombat games who sold the rights to Warner Bros. a while back.
Larry Kasanoff and his Threshold Entertainment are seeking compensatory and punitive damages, claiming that the franchise as it currently stands is more the product of its creation than Midway’s. Basically, they want the rights back, though I suspect the real motive may be to get a producing credit in the reboot.
Despite being burdened with the “reboot” tag, there’s little doubt that with the right [...]

For a while there, it seemed like Mortal Kombat fans might finally get the third entry in the fighting game turned movie franchise that they had been waiting for ever since “Mortak Kombat: Annihilation” in 1997. Alas, it was not meant to be, since the last time we heard about the sequel was way back in July 2009, when someone mentioned that filming was starting later that year. That, er, didn’t happen, as you may have probably figured out by now. So what now? Well, why not just reboot it the whole darn thing?
According to Bloody-Disgusting, a reboot by Warner Bros. is in the works, with the studio in talks with screenwriter Oren Uziel to pen the script. That’s all we know for now, but at least it’s moving again, which is something. And it’s even kinda logical if you think about it. The reboot would benefit from better CGI and special effects for the battling creatures, and as [...]

According to the guy who played Scorpion in the last two “Mortal Kombat” movies, filming on “Mortal Kombat 3″ is gearing up for September 2009. Then again, this is coming from the mouth of Chris Casamassa to a local paper, so who knows if there is any validity to it. Maybe he actually meant he would be playing the MK3 game in September? Well probably not, but you know, I’ll believe it when the trades announce it.
Until then, this is from SGVTribune.com (via):
According to Casamassa, he’s set to start filming the third Mortal Kombat film in September.
Well, that’s it. Casamassa says it, so it must be true. Sort of.
As previously reported, Warner Bros. has just recently bought up all of Midway Games’ titles (MK being one of them), so it’s almost a sure bet that a MK3 will happen, it’s just a matter of when. Either a direct sequel to the two previous movies, or a reboot. Either [...]

The last time we heard anything about another “Mortal Kombat” movie it was way, way, way back in early 2008, when the film’s would-be director mink (yes, one word, all lower cases, how obnoxious is that?) talked about his approach to the sequel, which he envisioned more as a “re-imagining”. Well never you mind that one, because it ain’t happening. At least, not yet. There are good news, though, for you “Mortal Kombat” movie fans out there (there are a couple of you, right?), after this Variety report that Warner Bros. has purchased the MK property (including “Spy Hunter” and “Joust”, among many others) from Midway Games.
The specifics of the deal aren’t important, just that a big-time movie studio now has their hands on a couple of popular game franchises, with MK primed for a return to the big screen. The first two movies made a nice chunk of change at the box office, and it’s been over 12 years [...]

So what’s the deal with “Mortal Kombat 3″? Frankly, I’m shocked it’s taken the Powers That Be this long to put the sequel together. Didn’t 1997’s “Mortal Kombat 2″ make plenty of money? At least enough to justify another sequel? The latest news on “Mortal Kombat 3″ (tentatively sub-titled “Devastation”) is that the script is still being written, no one has been cast yet, and, um, it’s still in limbo for some reason. Ugh, get this thing made already, ya bums.
More:
[The film's director] mink says the project isn’t so much a sequel as it is a “re-envisioning (if that is a word) of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom. Todays audience is a savvy involved group so the film must be A plus plus in every area in order to capture the magic of the first film. It is taking the entire concept to the next level across the board in every area visual design, story, cast, FX, [...]
