Most of the horror related to vampire movies is predicated upon the fact that their presence is sparse and unexpected so that they have to hide in the dark. Daybreakers is one of those rare moves that inverts the concept and creates a world filled with vampires. No longer do humans have strength in numbers. Instead, they are hunted, but they are a precious commodity, since they are farmed for their blood. In fact, one of the more amusing aspects of the trailer, which you can see below, is what appears to be a store front that sells blood like it’s ice cream.
I don’t know if the film will eventually work. A few years ago Daybreakers star Ethan Hawke noted that the film is an allegory about dwindling resources, yet also called it low art and silly. I assume he meant that in an amiable way, as such that it’s meant to be unpretentious and pure fun, since I don’t [...]

Having recently heard about this movie for the first time, I wondered why it seems so much like a secret. The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond is made from a Tennessee Williams screenplay that Elia Kazan never produced. It would almost be like finding a long dormant Mozart piece. Well, that’s not a perfect analogy, since a screenplay merely provides the structure. But then again, how did a director whose only directing credit is a short 1998 film called Why I Live at the P.O. come into possession of it? Apparently, it was found amongst the author’s papers in 1983 and was acquired by a film company called Paladin. That’s all that a quick Google search will yield.
Coming Soon has the exclusive trailer for the film, which stars Bryce Dallas Howard in 1920s Memphis as Fisher Willow, a woman of high class who is frustrated by the corruption around her. She takes the poor Jimmy Dobyne (played by Chris Evans) [...]

The Lovely Bones is Peter Jackson’s first full length feature film spent in the director’s chair since King Kong, after having spent so many years invested in high budget fantasy and action films. He returns to his roots this time with a very haunting and lovely character story, based on a lauded 2002 novel by Alice Sebold. If you’ve seen the trailer, then you know that the film has plenty of fantastical elements wrapped in a supernatural mold. Ain’t it Cool already has a review of it and lavishes it with profuse praise. While most people have to wait until December 11th for the limited release, MySpace has posted both a clip and a new poster, which you can see below. The poster looks beautiful and artistic, with almost a heavenly use of colors contrasted with the sea of bones under foot. It’s very similar to the previous poster released for the film. It’s hard to get anything from the clip, [...]

Those darn Nazis and their darn murderous experiments. They were going at it something pretty fierce back in the day. Luckily, we’ve beaten their asses back to the stone age with a combination of true American grit and good old fashion Nazi bashing baseball bats. (Or, what I learned about World War II by watching Quentin Tarantino movies). But it wasn’t always that way. The new Danish slasher “Final Solution” chronicles the life and times of a young Jew named Emma in Denmark, as he tries to uncover what happened to her family. As you can tell from the gritty, atmosphere-soaked trailer below, it doesn’t look like our Emma is going to like what she finds. See, she shoulda stuck to Spring Break at Cabo like the rest of us…
More goodies from Martin Bech’s “Final Solution” over at the film’s official site.

Whilst swirling stupidly in the nostalgic soup generated by the Full Moon’s announcement of a new “Puppet Master” film, I almost missed the life-affirming declaration that a new “Demonic Toys” movie was on the verge of release. However, I don’t know if my psyche or my social life could handle another low-budget gem featuring a plethora of pint-sized villains, but I’m certainly willing to give it a shot. I don’t know which otherworldly deity I’ve pleased over the past few years, but I need to figure it out post-haste. If I can get all of my sacrificial ducks in a row, perhaps I can conjure a “Shrunken Heads” sequel before the world comes to a Cusack-sized halt in 2012.
In case you had a life in the early 90’s, “Demonic Toys” was the Peter Manoogian directed, David Goyer scripted horror flick which centered around the inhabitants of a haunted toy warehouse. It was cheap, ugly, and starred Tracy Scoggins — in [...]

Frankly, I didn’t expect a whole lot from Dominic Sena’s “Season of the Witch”, especially after the teaser trailer surfaced last month. And oh yeah, the movie stars Nicolas Cage, and when that’s the case, there’s an 80-20 percent chance he’s going to sleep walk his way through the movie, all the while daydreaming about all the wacky things he could buy with his paycheck. (In case you haven’t heard; Nic Cage is pretty much broke.) When even Ron Perlman can’t make your movie look decent, you know you’re in trouble. Of course, the fact that it focuses too much on Nic Cage’s bored face and dialogue delivery doesn’t help. Via Lionsgate, here’s the full trailer for “Season of the Witch”.

I’ve been excited about this project for quite some time, despite the fact that the previous entries in the series — excluding the ass-kicking original, of course — are the cinematic equivalent of sticking your both feet forcibly inserted into an industrial strength garbage disposal. If nothing else, “Universal Soldier: Regeneration” brings Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme back together for another round of superhuman sci-fi tomfoolery. Even if the movie is rancid from the basement to the rooftop, at least we get to see these two iconic action heroes smacking each other around for 90 minutes. For my entertainment dollar, that’s pretty darn snazzy.
While taking a peek around Twitch this morning, I happened upon the official trailer for director John Hyams forthcoming production. And while it’s an admittedly lame preview, it does provide potential viewers with enough goofy imagery to whet their proverbial whistle. Assuming, of course, the whistle in question was designed for this sort of silliness.

A few days ago Variety reported (you kind of have to mine for it in the article) that veteran editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch were being brought in to recut The Wolfman, even though the release date is only a few months away, on February 12, 2010. This could be a very bad thing for the film, culminating in what has already been a tumultuous creation process, but it could be a good thing. Films can often be made in the editing room, and both editors have had extensive experience. Goldblatt has edited such films as Terminator 2 and Pearl Harbor, while Murch worked on The English Patient and Cold Mountain, winning an Oscar for sound editing in Apocalypse Now.
The point is, I hope that the film has a chance to succeed because it still looks very cool. The featurette below has some behind the scenes footage and interviews, which increases my excitement for the film. Benicio del Toro [...]

For those who are interested in such things, John Woo’s martial arts epic “Red Cliff” (formerly “The Battle of Red Cliff”) opened in limited release in the States yesterday. Granted, the perfect timing for this post would have been yesterday, but hey, better late than never, right? In case you were still wondering what the movie is about, or if you should go see it, here’s a question: Do you like epic battle scenes? If the answer is Yes, then you should go see it. The film is a bit long, even at its current edited length of 2 hrs. 28 minutes. Trust me, that’s about 1 hour and 30 minutes shorter than the original Asian version, which clocked in at over 4 hours. Check out some battle scene clips from the movie below. Also added, the English trailer.
The film stars Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Shido Nakamura, and is directed by John Wo. It’s [...]

Well-executed promotional trailers for intense martial arts movies are not unlike a hit of crack: as soon as you you get that initial buzz, you instantly want more. The clip for Michael Chuah’s upcoming kung fu extravaganza “Fist of Dragon” is insanely tasty, and has quickly wormed its way to the top of my 2010 must-see list. Where did this film come from? Why haven’t I heard anything about it until this very moment? Had it not been for Twitch Film, I may have missed this one altogether. Which, of course, would have been a damn shame, as I love me some old-school kung fu.
Here’s the rundown of the plot:
Fist of Dragon” tells the story of Li, who comes to South East Asia by the request of his father to help out his uncle who has been facing financial difficulties. Li, upon arriving in the town, feels out of place due to the differences in cultures of the people here. [...]

I’m convinced that Uwe Boll will soon create a movie so bad that it will be like an unintentional Springtime for Hitler in real life. Unfortunately, Far Cry doesn’t look like that kind of movie. Instead, it looks far too generic. Uwe Boll must have really mailed this effort in, when he could have created a truly awful film.
Far Cry is based on the videogame of the same name about, well, blowing stuff up. That’s all the impetus necessary for playing a videogame but not, I feel, for watching a movie. I believe that the film has already been released in Germany, but it’s coming out on DVD in the US on November 24th. It stars Til Schweiger, Emmanuelle Vaugier, and Udo Kier.

However, yesterday several trailer-centric websites debuted a slightly retooled promo for the upcoming “Sin City”-esque actioner, leading me to believe that the picture may, in fact, be creeping closer to a release date. If you’ve already seen some of the older trailers floating around the ‘net, chances are this isn’t going to show you anything you haven’t already seen. The rest of you are in for a serious treat.

“Bitch Slap” is a post-modern, thinking man’s throwback to the “B” Movie/Exploitation films of the 1950’s – 70’s as well as a loving, sly parody of same. Inspired by the likes of “Dragstrip Girls,” “Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill,” “Kung Fu Nun” and the pantheon of Blacksploitation films, “Bitch Slap” mixes hot girls, fast cars, big guns, nasty [...]

Indie filmmaking duo Michael and Peter Spierig’s upcoming vampire saga “Daybreakers” looks to be a nice departure from the romantic bloodsucker angle we’ve forced to endure as of late. I, for one, don’t mind the picture’s “Equilibrium” meets “The Matrix” aesthetic — I’m just looking for some decent action featuring a gaggle of rebel human freedom fighters battling their way through a world full of bloodsucking villains. The latest marketing tool for the flick’s January 8th release is designed to resemble a PSA, and while it isn’t as snazzy as some of the “Resident Evil” clips that were floating around a few years ago, it does a decent job of establishing tone and atmosphere. Placebo’s haunting cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up that Hill” doesn’t hurt things, either.

When one considers old musicals, one would immediately think of An American in Paris or Singing in the Rain: slick talking characters who can also tap dance really well. Sometimes a musical like My Fair Lady would include a great story too. It’s a real difference from today’s frenetic, tightly cut and choreographed, sensuous musicals. In the case of Nine, which I have not seen on stage, it looks to also be a departure from the original inspiration, Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2. I don’t know how many potential audience members will have heard of the Italian film (I have no idea who goes to these things, anyway), but it doesn’t look like that will matter: there is no reason to think that knowledge of the original is required.
The new trailer, which you can see below, mostly features Kate Hudson singing Cinema Italiano, with quick cuts to other parts of the film. They happen much too quickly to be recognizable, except [...]

What else is there to say except World War II was Goddamn brutal, but it had to be fought. From Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg comes the “Band of Brothers” movie for the next decade, the epic mini-series “The Pacific”. As the title implies, this one doesn’t bother with the war in Europe, but will instead take a look at the hell in the Pacific, and follows a cast of Marines as they invade the Japanese islands on their way to taking down the Empire. HBO released the second trailer last month. As with “Band of Brothers”, the actors are mostly unknowns, which is the way it should be because this isn’t a mini-series about actors, it’s about the people they’re playing. HBO premieres the mini-series next year in March.

This is a very strange independent film: it has a whole series of name actors (Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, and Robert Duvall), but no one seems to know much about it. It hasn’t appeared at any film festivals but has only been screened a select few times. However, the buzz that the film has generated has galvanized Jeff Bridges to all kinds of acclaim. Bridges plays Bad Blake, a hard-drinking country singer who is on the down slope of his life, until a journalist discovers the man behind the music. Distributed by Fox Searchlight, Crazy Heart will open to a limited release on December 11th, 2009.

You know how comedies always pretty much blow their wad by giving away all the film’s funniest bits in the trailers in hopes of luring you into paying your hard-earned money to see them in theaters? Well it looks like the makers of “Grown Ups” is going in the other direction. Instead of making a trailer chock full of the movie’s best gags, this trailer is shockingly laughing in anything resembling comedy. Really, how can a movie with so many famous comedians look so horribly unfunny? It’s like these guys just got together and thought, “You know, let’s slap something together where we get paid to hang out and call it a movie!” When your best selling gag is the fat guy swinging into a tree and them falling down a hillside, you’re not even trying anymore.
Featuring the horrendously wasted talents of Adam Sandler, Salma Hayek, Steve Buscemi, Maria Bello, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Maya [...]

Filipino director Yam Laranas did such a bang-up good job with his 2004 horror movie “Sigaw”, that he repeated the process on 2008’s “The Echo”, an English-language remake of “Sigaw” that went straight to DVD. Laranas is back with a new horror movie called “Patient X”, which has the makings of an effective “last stand in a haunted house” type, which is always something I’m down for. Trailer and poster for the movie via Bloody-Disgusting below.
Here’s the not-all-that-coherent plot synopsis for “Patient X”:
After twenty years, local police captures the murderer of the older brother of a young boy. Now a doctor, he must go back to his old town and face the murderers himself. He then discovers that the murderers are Aswangs (folkloric Filipino vampire-like creatures) and they pose a deadly threat not only to him but also for the entire town.
Starring Richard Gutierrez, Cristine Reyes, TJ Trinidad, Miriam Quiambao, Elvis Gutierrez, Nanding Josef	, Crispin Pineda, Dion Ignacio, and directed [...]

Let’s face it, if you aren’t jazzed up about seeing James McTeigue’s “Ninja Assassin” on opening day after all the clips and trailers and pics we’ve posted, these four new clips from Warner Bros. isn’t going to change your mind. In which case, you’re probably reading the wrong site, because if you can’t get psyched for a movie like “Ninja Assassin”, you probably should be reading, oh I don’t know, the New York Times’s Style Section or something equally pretentious. Starring Sung Kang, Randall Duk Kim, Ben Miles, Naomie Harris, Rain, and the legendary Sho Kosugi, “Ninja Assassin” opens next week, November 25.

There have been several recent films looking back on the African genocide, including The Last King of Scotland and Hotel Rwanda. In spite of the knowledge of the events, the entire region hasn’t received the kind of support and help that it deserves. For most people in the developed world, the searing films that the genocides “inspired” seem to be the only witness of the events. Now comes Shake Hands With the Devil, which is based on a book by General Romeo Dallaire about how his request for more aide before the 1994 Rwandan genocide went unanswered by the United Nations. The film is being directed by Roger Spottiswoode (The 6th Day, Tomorrow Never Dies) and stars Roy Dupuis in the role of General Dallaire. The film actually premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival but has just recently picked up a distributor. It is planning to be released in 2010.
