The general rule is that the more sequels a film spawns, the crappier they are. Take “The Mummy” (1999). It had a cheesy B-film feel to it with an Indiana Jones vibe. Set in Egypt, it contained some romance, laughs and high adventure. It was entertaining summer fare that introduced us to Oded Fehr. (Yowza.) Not wanting to tamper with a sure thing, writer/director Stephen Sommers reteamed Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and had them, again, combating Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), the mummy who refused to stay dead in the aptly titled “Mummy Returns.” Taking the romance a bit further, this story finds Rick and Evie as husband and wife, and parents to a pre-teen named Alex (Freddie Boath). Still keeping the ladies happy, the film brought back Fehr and added eye candy wrestler-cum-actor Dwayne Johnson as Mathayus the Scorpion King. I wouldn’t say that “Mummy Returns” was bad, per se, it just wasn’t “The Mummy.” For me [...]

“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” was good, but it wasn’t good enough to knock Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” off its #1 perch. Already in its third week and still gobbling up box office cash like it’s going out of style (it’s already at $394.9 million in just 3 weeks at the U.S. box office alone), “The Dark Knight” just barely edged out the third installment of the “Mummy” franchise to maintain its hold on the first place spot at the domestic box office over the weekend, according to studio estimates. While “Mummy 3″ took in an altogether-not-bad $42.5 million in its opening week, Batman and company still managed to best it with $43.8 million. The weekend’s only other opening film, the Kevin Costner political-satire/comedy “Swing Vote” opened with $6.3 million.
Other notables has the Will Ferrell comedy “Step Brothers” continuing a good second week at the box office with a $16.3 million take, good enough for third place. [...]

The gang’s all back for another rousing mummy adventure in “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”. Well, kinda. The gang is sorta back together, if your definition of “gang” is two-thirds of the original stars, and the addition of a new, potential spin-off character. Oh well, two-thirds is something, right? And as long as star Brendan Fraser is back as tomb raiding adventurer Rick O’Connell, what could go wrong? Well plenty, as it turns out. Perhaps Rachel Weisz may have had the right idea when she took a pass on this third outing in the “Mummy” franchise.
Which isn’t to say “Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” is a total loss. As a fan of Jet Li, I still get a kick out of seeing him playing a baddie. In this latest installment of the undead franchise, Li plays the Chinese Emperor Han, a man so consumed with ruling the world that he decides to cheat death in order [...]

Well let’s face it: if you aren’t pysched about seeing Rob Cohen’s take on the Mummy films with “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”, chances are you have no interest in seeing this movie whatsoever, in which case go read something else. For those who still have a interest in watching the O’Connell clan return to kick some more mummy ass (this time it’s gonna be trickier, seeing as how Jet Li’s ass is pretty hard to kick), here are some new (and probably final) batch of “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” images for your perusal pleasure. As you can probably imagine, this thing is gonna be all about the action, action, and more action.
In the Far East, trouble-seeking father-and-son duo Rick and Alex O’Connell unearth the mummy of the first Emperor of Qin — a shape-shifting entity who was cursed by a wizard centuries ago.

A week or so ago I was reading an article about how the Chinese are practically apoplectic about the success of “Kung Fu Panda”. The gist of the article was that there are two trains of thought to the success of “Panda”: the first group didn’t want foreigners cashing in on their national icon, the panda; while the second group was beside themselves that they didn’t do it sooner, which they would have if not for Government censorship that wouldn’t allow them to do something as benign as make an animated kung fu movie about a fat panda.
Then there’s this news that Rob Cohen’s “The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” is behind halted from showing in China until changes are made. What are those changes the great and all-knowing Red Commies want changed? Um, your guess is probably as good as anyone’s, as the Chinese aren’t exactly known for offering up details when it comes to why [...]

I am an unabashed fan of the “Mummy” franchise. Yes, I even liked “The Scorpion King”. Sorta. Well, not really, it had potential but really didn’t do much with it. The two “Mummy” films were good, in a munching popcorn entertainment sort of way. The first one in particular seemed to be trying to (and I think for the most part succeeded) in capturing the magic of the old days of adventure serials, which I assume was what original director Stephen Sommers was going for. “Mummy 2″ was a bit long and derivative, but still fun. And from everything I’ve seen of the latest “Mummy”, “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”, it looks to fall right in line with the previous two films.
And come on, Jet Li as the bad guy, sporting that wicked facial hair. You gotta love that, if nothing else, because you probably won’t see it again.
So the storyline? Since the last time we caught up with [...]

So here it is, as promised by director Rob Cohen — the first trailer for the third installment (some would say, fourth) in “The Mummy” franchise, “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”. Gone is original director Stephen Sommer, and replaced by Cohen, who has been keeping a very nice and thorough production blog on the film from its inception to its conclusion. I’ve always been a fan of the “Mummy” movies because they’ve always been goofy, clean fun. Plus, it’s good to see Brendan Fraser in a movie that’ll make more than $2 bucks at the box office again.
Curiously, I can’t tell from the trailer if Mario Bello’s British accent is any good…

As promised, Rob Cohen’s “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” blog has undergone a makeover earlier today (midnight, to be exact), and the director has posted some new behind-the-scenes production photos from the movie, as well as behind-the-scenes videos of the director in action and some groovy looking concept artwork. I’ve seen a couple of the official stills before, but most of them are pretty new stuff.
Rob Cohen directs the third installment in the “Mummy” franchise, taking over from Stephen Sommers. The film stars Jet Li, Brendan Fraser, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Luke Ford, and Michelle Yeoh. It opens August 1st, 2008.

Ah, “The Mummy 3″. Or as it’s officially known, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”. I’ve heard a lot of grumbling, most of it centered around the fact that Rachel Weisz didn’t return in the role of Evie O’Connell, with the role having gone to Maria Bello. I’m not so much concern about that change in actress, even though, like a lot of people, I have come to appreciate and adore Weisz as the klutzy but nerdy-hot Evie O’Connell. But as they say, it is what it is, and Maria Bello isn’t all that big a step down from Rachel Weisz, acting-wise. Sure, the accent will be affected instead of genuine, but still, Maria ain’t exactly chop liver, boys.
Anyhoo, the plot:
Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing [...]

While talking with MTV, Maria Bello, who replaces Rachel Weisz in the upcoming “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”, says that she is already signed for a whole series of new “Mummy” films, and she’s sure “Mummy 4″ is on its way very soon. And you know, for a woman usually known for more indie fare, she sure seems enthusiastic about getting tied up with a commercial franchise. I guess the money must be good.
More:
Bello admits to having so much fun, in fact, that she’s looking forward to three more “Mummy” movies, confessing that she’s already signed on for a whole trilogy of sequels.
“I don’t know when, but it’s going,” she said. “[There will] absolutely be ‘The Mummy 4.’ ”
The box office for “Mummy 3″ should be good, given the fanbase of the franchise, so she’s probably right. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear the fourth installment announced after the film’s first weekend opening.
Here’s Maria with MTV:

And I know it’s not John Hannah or star Brendan Fraser, so, it’s probably Luke Ford.

Say what you will about the upcoming “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”, but I’m sure as hell looking forward to it. If it has even 50% of the wacky “fun ride” nature of the last two, it should be worth two hours in a dark studio with a box of popcorn and watered down coke. Via the guys over at The Movie Blog, here is the official synopsis released by Rob Cohen and crew for “Dragon Emperor”.
The blockbuster global “Mummy” franchise takes a spellbinding turn as the action shifts to Asia for the next chapter in the adventure series, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) [...]

The guys over at Worst Previews have landed some more images from Rob Cohen’s upcoming third entry in the “Mummy” franchise. Well, if you don’t count “The Scorpion King”, and I don’t think anyone does, do they? In any case, the new images are pretty spiffy, and shows a very action-packed movie. I still don’t really buy Jet Li as a bad guy, though, mostly because he’s kind of small, and I would imagine that he’d look even smaller standing next to Brendan Fraser. But hey, maybe director Rob Cohen has something up his sleeve that will make us “buy” Li as a badass villain. (He was semi-badass in “Lethal Weapon 4″, but I still didn’t really buy that one, either…)
In the Far East, trouble-seeking father-and-son duo Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Alex O’Connell (Luke Ford) unearth the mummy of the first Emperor of Qin (Jet Li) — a shape-shifting entity who was cursed by a wizard (Michelle Yeoh) centuries ago.

A scant two days after giving us our first look at Jet Li in his upcoming “Mummy 3″ movie (seen in mid-air delivering a drop kick at Brendan Fraser’s mug, no less), director Rob Cohen has provided a second look at Jet as the Dragon Emperor (thumbnail to your left, bigger version below) over at his blog. This one isn’t quite as exciting — Jet on a horse, uh, riding it through some desert. Eh. Still, I like what Cohen is doing. Jon Favreau is doing the same thing with his Iron Man movie, and people love the lug for it. Cohen is smart to keep fans updated with goodies like this, and I wish more directors would do this.
Just a quick one, family, to give you the first look at Jet Li as the Emperor riding into battle about to re-take command of 5000 terracotta mummies. The sword fight between Jet and Michelle Yeoh that I have been shooting [...]

Is it wrong of me to be rooting for the bad guy played by Jet Li in Rob Cohen’s upcoming “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperoer”? I don’t know, because as much as I like Brendan Fraser and his Rick O’Connell character, I can’t just bring myself to root against Jet Li, even when he’s playing a bad guy. I was on his side when he first assayed his first villain role in that “Lethal Weapon” sequel, rooting for him to put Murtaugh and Riggs into the ground, and finding it very lame that two aging cops with bad hip could beat his flying fists of fury. But I digress. Rob Cohen has posted a new picture from “Mummy 3″ on his blog.
Here’s some flavor of the mano a mano Brendan Fraser/Jet Li fight. Out here in Tianmo, there is no internet (there is no indoor plumbing!) so it takes some time in ‘dial-up’ back at the hotel. Be [...]

In his production blog for “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”, director Rob Cohen is practically giddy as he reports that Jet Li has arrived at the film’s Montreal set and is ready to shoot his scenes. That’s all fine and well, but I’m more excited that Cohen has posted three images from the movie — or, actually, two images and one behind-the-scenes. The first image is of Brendan Frasier as Rick O’Connell and the second is of Maria Bello as Evie O’Connell, while the third features actresses Michelle Yeoh and Isabella Leong enjoying some down time on the set, which looks suspiciously like a cave or “tomb”.
In the Far East, trouble-seeking father-and-son duo Rick (Fraser) and Alex O’Connell (Ford) unearth the mummy of the first Emperor of Qin (Li) — a shape-shifting entity who was cursed by a wizard (Yeoh) centuries ago.
Don’t expect Jet and the Dragon Emperor until August 2008.

Director Rob Cohen has updated his blog with a wallpaper image from the set of the “The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”. No actors or characters, just “a cool photo of our mausoleum set taken last week by Jasin Boland,” says Cohen. Still, it’s your first look at anything “Mummy 3″ related, so it’s worth posting. Plus, Maria Bello, the female lead in the film, recently talked to Sci Fi Wire about her role in the film, or as she calls it, the “bad-ass action chick” character. She also seems genuinely excited to be involved in the franchise, which is always a good thing.
More:
Bello, who took time off from filming in Montreal to appear at the film festival to promote The Jane Austen Book Club, takes over the role of Evelyn Carnahan from Weisz, who played the character in the first two Mummy movies but bowed out of the third.
“She has the same name, but she’s a very [...]

I really like what Rob Cohen is doing at this blog, even though he isn’t really going the Jon Favreau route and really keeping the fans up to date on the progress of The Mummy 3, at least he’s trying, and that’s got to count for something. I wish more filmmakers would do this, filling the fans in on what’s happening, instead of making us dig for every little piece of information, and then sending their lawyer stormtroopers when we find something and post it on our sites. Sometimes you get the feeling these Hollywood types would rather play the ego trip game instead of actually get people excited to see their movies; or maybe they think they’re too good for us. Whatever. In any case, Cohen has made a new post on his blog, and this time he talks about the Rachel Weisz departure from the franchise.
Or, actually, he doesn’t say why Weisz left, he just mentions that actors [...]

A reader pointed me to this site (“In Production with Rob Cohen”) created for the upcoming Mummy 3 movie, which has since been given the way-too-long title of, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”. Whatever happened to brevity? I could have just gone with “Mummy 3″ and leave it at that. In any case, the site is actually a blog for director Rob Cohen, who hasn’t exactly been received warmly by Internet fanboys who seems to hate everything he does. Then again, he’s replacing director Stephen Sommers on the franchise’s third installment, and Sommers isn’t exactly a favorite among fanboys nowadays after having been named director of the live-action G.I. Joe movie. Then again, Internet fanboys can get a little bitchy, so nevermind them.
In his first blogging post, Cohen writes about the movie:
I am taking the story to a new place: China. Jet Li plays a despotic Emperor in 50 B.C. whose evil is punished by a terrible curse [...]
