(Movie Review by Kevin Nickelson) Have you ever been to a coffee shop or diner and noticed one of the desserts under glass that’s never been touched? The donuts that look like they’ve been there a few days? Or, maybe it’s a blueberry pie that stands alone, ignored by the very suitors it targets, the hungry human patron. It seems like a metaphor should be inserted here. Ok, the pie is a metaphor representing every boy or girl forced to walk as a victim away from a busted relationship. They feel abandoned and emotionally drained. They question their ability to love again and whether they feel they can be loved again. At least that is the theme heavily explored (a blueberry pie even shows as a symbol in some scenes) by Chinese director Kar Wai Wong in “My Blueberry Nights”, a 2007 release from Studio Canal, Block 2 Pictures, and Jet Tone Production.
The story revolves around Elizabeth (a surprisingly charismatic [...]

From everything I’ve seen and heard about Wong Kar Wai’s latest, and his first American movie “My Blueberry Nights”, I can’t see myself not loving the hell out of this movie. As a fan of Wong (hell, I’m such a fan I think his “2046″ was brilliant!), this is definitely on my must-see list. Here are more images from the movie.
After a rough break-up, Elizabeth sets out on a journey across America, leaving behind a life of memories, a dream and a soulful new friend; a cafe owner–all while in search of something to mend her broken heart. Waitressing her way through the country, Elizabeth befriends others whose yearnings are greater than hers, including a troubled cop and his estranged wife and a down-on-her luck gambler with a score to settle. Through these individuals, Elizabeth witnesses the true depths of loneliness and emptiness, and begins to understand that her own journey is part of a greater exploration within herself.

Returning to the film festival that gave him the Best Director Award in 1997 for “Happy Together”, Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai shakes off the shackles of his 5-year odyssey making “2046″ to open the festival with his latest, “My Blueberry Nights”, a film about America starring British actor Jude Law (playing a Brit, for once) and R&B crooner Norah Jones in her acting debut. The film also co-stars Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz, and is about a young woman (Jones) who takes a soul-searching journey across America to resolve her questions about love while encountering a series of offbeat characters along the way. You know, the usual Wong Kar Wai cinematic stuff. I.e. if you didn’t like Wong Kar Wai’s stuff before this movie, you ain’t gonna like his stuff after it.
The trailer is online, and you can take a gander at it here.
The Weinstein Company is releasing the film in limited release (i.e. New York, L.A., and [...]
