You don’t have to be an Asian movie snob to think that remaking Chan-wook Park’s “Oldboy” is probably not a really good idea. But then to announce you’re not really going to remake the Korean movie, but will actually go back to the original Japanese manga source material for your version? As if Park’s version was somehow lacking? That was just bound to rile up a lot of people, especially the aforementioned Asian movie snobs. But that’s all a moot point now, because according to Latino Review, the remake is dead. D-E-D. Dead.
Citing “trusted sources”, LR claims that the remake is dead because Dreamworks and Mandate couldn’t agree on how to proceed with the movie in a timely enough manner. As a result, Steven Spielberg, who was supposed to direct, and Will Smith, who was supposed to star, have walked away from the project.
I don’t know, though. Spielberg is Spielberg, and I think he could have done a pretty decent [...]

Yup, they’re still doing it, despite the fact that all you fanboys cried and cried over it. Well get used to it, because Hollywood could care less what you say, and they’re going through with a remake of your precious “Oldboy” anyway. Why? Because Hollywood hates you, that’s why. But hey, look at the bright side: at least they put the big guns on this thing, right? It’s better than having your favoritest movie in the whole wide world be directed by, say, a hack like Brett Ratner or God forbid, those retards that make the spoof movies. Am I right or am I right? The latest news on the “Oldboy” remake front is that “I am Legend” writer Mark Protosevich has joined in on the fun to adapt the Korean original into English.
THR has your legendary news:
In a potential high-profile star-writer reunion, “I Am Legend” co-scribe Mark Protosevich is in early talks to pen the remake of “Old Boy” [...]

Oh boy. Hollywood still insists on remaking Chan-wook Park’s hyper violent “Oldboy”. Why? Because they’re Hollywood, that’s why, and why go the original route when you could just remake some Asian movie only a few people in America have seen? Hey, it worked for Martin Scorsese, and he won Oscars! Anyways, Variety has a (awesome or horrid, depending on your perspective) article on how Steven Spielberg is looking to secure remake rights to Chan-wook Park’s “Oldboy”, with Will Smith in talks to star should the deal come through. Now at first this may seem like a really, really bad idea, but I think it’s pretty clear by now that Will Smith can act and Steven Spielberg can direct. So are we looking at another “Infernal Affairs”/”The Departed” here? One can only hope.
More:
In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone [...]
