One of the biggest Asian cinema events of 2008, “Painted Skin” is the latest film to draw inspiration from Pu Songling’s classic of Chinese literature “Strange Tales of Liaozhai”. Although the legendary King Hu actually directed a film back in 1993 with the same name and based upon the same material, Gordon Chan’s new version is more of a re-imagining, being more in the vein of other recent big budget costume epics, boasting an all-star cast and luscious production values. The film has certainly proved popular, having topped the box office in both China and Hong Kong and despite some mixed critical reviews has been chosen as Hong Kong’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2009 Oscars. Although only recently released on DVD, a Director’s Cut has now emerged, with an extra 15 minutes of footage, as well as a host of extras.
The film begins as a young maiden called Xiaowei (Mainland actress Zhou [...]

Gordon Chan’s “Painted Skin” is based on a story in the book “Strange Tales of Liaozhai” by writer Pu Songling, and has been adapted for the big screen twice before – once in 1966 and again in 1993 by the legendary Hong Kong director King Hu. Chan’s movie is what you would call a genre-buster, in that it can’t decide what it wants to be, so it does a little bit of everything, but manages to not do any of them very well. It’s a horror movie about demons, although there’s nothing overly horrific or indeed very scary about it. It’s also a very standard Hong Kong period kung fu movie, complete with ludicrous wireworks, stunts, and a product of the times, gratuitous CGI. You never know when someone will get their hearts ripped out and eaten, or when characters will spontaneously run up walls and engage in aerial sword duels, or plot twists that will appear out of thin [...]

Donnie Yen’s horror/action/historical epic “Painted Skin” has the potential to be really, really awful, or just this side of okay. I had high hopes for the movie when it was just revving up production, but everything I’ve seen of it since has been a tad … confusing. This, despite the usually very reliable Gordon Chan directing. But in any case, here’s the first trailer that I’ve run across for “Painted Skin”. Even after seeing this trailer, I still have no idea how this thing is going to turn out. It could be okay, but it could also be really, really awful. Right now, I’ve given up hoping for it to be anything great, which is unfortunate, but it’s difficult to be TOO optimistic the way this thing is looking right now.
Starring Vicki Zhao and Donnie Yen, and directed by Gordon Chan. It’s due out in the Chinese territories in September.

Yay! Another behind-the-scenes look at an upcoming movie! (Gee, I sure hope I don’t come across as “bitching” with this one…) Anyhoo. Although everything I had heard about Donnie Yen’s “Painted Skin” was painting it (ahem) as a horror movie, everything I’m actually seeing is pointing to a period martial arts movie. This behind-the-scenes footage from a Mainland Chinese entertainment show (yes, they actually exist, go figure) only confirms my belief that “Painted Skin” seems to be an action movie with a little dose of horror thrown in every now and then.
IMDB.com’s description keeps telling me it’s kinda a horror movie:
An action-thriller centered on a vampire-like woman who eats the skins and hearts of her lovers.
But the footage below seems to not be the case (via).
Starring Donnie Yen, Wei Zhao, Xun Zhou, Betty Sun, Kun Chen, and Yuwu Qi	. Gordon Chan (”Fist of Legend”) directs.

The more I see of Donnie Yen’s latest “Painted Skin”, the more it’s looking more like those ’80s Category III Hong Kong movies — a lot of skin, bad simulated sex, and loads of pseudo horror that relies more on gore to shock than anything actually, you know, scary. Now there is nothing wrong with that combo, and indeed, it’s a great deal of fun on a Saturday night when one finds oneself dateless (which, ahem, has never happened to me, of course). Here are some more character posters and images from the movie, which sees a female vampire-like chick doing vampire-like stuff to people, and Donnie Yen in a suit of armor with a big weapon, presumably to hack said chick’s head off. Presumably.
Via 24Framespersecond, who links to another site that has more images that reveals more of the movie. Unfortunately the images aren’t the best quality, there are some good ones, but overall, they kinda looked like someone [...]

Over at their Asian movie blog, Variety has two new images from the Donnie Yen period/martial arts/horror/drama “Painted Skin”, a $10 million dollar movie that has seen three (!) directors, two action choreographers, and other changes in the cast, including the coming, and then going, of Daniel Wu. The film is now scheduled for a September 28, 2008 release, and stars Zhao Wei, Donnie Yen and Zhou Xun. The film itself is kind of skating below the radar, which isn’t a surprise considering all the big period epics coming out of China/Hong Kong in 2008 alone.
More:
Set for a September 28, 2008 release, this flick stars Zhao Wei, Donnie Yen and Zhou Xun (THE BANQUET) and is a supernatural martial arts movie based on one of Pu Songling’s classic spooky tales of scary ghosts written in the 18th Century.
A couple of new images from Chinese site Sina below. Visit our “Painted Skin” Movie Images Gallery for more pics.

In the Asian horror movie “Painted Skin”, Donnie Yen has to fight off a vampire-like woman who eats the skins and hearts of her lovers. Ouch. The last time we heard anything about the film, director Wilson Yip had been replaced on the $15 million dollar picture by Gordon Chan, but other than that, not a whole lot. Now, via a Chinese site, we have two images from the movie — actually, what looks like posters with teaser images of Donnie Yen and, we presume, the vampire chick herself.
The story, about the relationship between humans and a girl from the world of spirits, was adapted from the classic Chinese legends titled STRANGE TALES OF LIAOZHAI, which previously inspired a 1993 Hong Kong film also titled PAINTED SKIN (pictured), directed by veteran King Hu and starring HK faves Adam Cheng, Sammo Hung, Lam Ching-Ying, Joey Wong and Wu Ma.
Donnie Yen’s big-budget supernatural thriller “Painted Skin” just got itself a new director — Gordon Chan, reports Variety. This is very good news. Replacing Wilson Yip with Chan (”2000 A.D.”, “A-1″) is like replacing McG with Steven Spielberg, talent-wise, with Yip hanging somewhere at the bottom of the totem pole and Chan near the top.
More on the $15 million budgeted film:

The new movie will shoot on Chinese locations late this year or in early 2008, depending on the lead actress’ schedule. Heavy CGI postproduction will follow, with completion targeted for the end of next year.

Coming off the heels of the police actioner “Flash Point”, Donnie Yen will be stepping into another action movie — with a supernatural twist. Yen’s latest, “Painted Skin”, is being described as “a rare Chinese supernatural actioner”, which means it will have ghosts, but not be all that scary since, well, they’ll be action scenes in it. How scary of a movie can you really make when there are guns and kung fu involved? And since Yen is the star of the movie, either guns or kung fu will be very much involved.
“Painted Skin” will co-star Singapore’s Yuwu Qi (”Home Song Stories”), and should start shooting sometime in 2008 with Mainland China money.
The movie will be directed by Wilson Yip, who also directed Yen in “Dragon Tiger Gate”, “Sha Po Lang” (since retitled “Killzone” for International consumption), and the upcoming “Flash Point”.
