For a long time, it looked like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was destined to be made. In spite of Johnny Depp’s equivocation, having been burned by the ousting of Disney chairman Dick Cook, he seemed ready to set sail for a fourth film. The script was being finished, the director was signed, and there was even word of a shooting schedule. Now Scifi Wire reports that Bill Nighy, who played Davy Jones in the previous two iterations and isn’t even going to be in the fourth film, said last week that it’s all premature:
“I understand that there was an announcement that there was going to be a fourth, and now I’ve been told since that that was not a reliable announcement,” Nighy told a group of reporters last week while promoting the animated film Astro Boy.
…
But Nighy doesn’t think Bruckheimer’s in any hurry, either. “Jerry at one point said we have to wait until the world is [...]

You fancy book readers might have noticed that the title of the latest “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, “On Stranger Tides” sounded a tad familiar, especially if you’re a reader of books by one Tim Powers. Well there’s a reason for that; Powers has now admitted that Disney optioned his 1987 book way back in 2006, but he had no idea they were planning to take the book’s basic premise and turn it into a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. And that premise? The pirate Blackbeard searches for the Fountain of Youth.
Says Powers about his book and the upcoming movie:
“I’ve watched all the movies several times, of course, and I think the clear thing they would use is the trip to the Fountain of Youth. My main character doesn’t overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they’re totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel [...]

It was a done deal for the longest time: Johnny Depp returning as Jack Sparrow in a fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. Along the way, the movie hit a major speed bump, and all it took was a pink slip. Now there is a chance Johnny Depp might not even end up doing the announced “Pirates 4″ movie, since titled “On Stranger Tides” and set to be directed by Rob Marshall.
The issue for Depp isn’t the money (Disney is willing to pay him just about anything, in all likelihood), but more to do with the recent firing of Depp’s good buddy, Disney suit Dick Cook from the Mouse House. Depp and Dick, it would appear, were this tight, and Depp has publicly expressed a lack of enthusiasm in returning to make Disney oodles and oodles of money after they’ve canned his best bud. Can you say: “Oops”?
It now appears as if Disney has heard the less-than-private rumblings from [...]

Pirates of the Caribbean at the moment could not be on stranger tides. Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have departed for other opportunities. Johnny Depp expressed remorse at the departure of Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook, explaining that there was a “fissure” in his enthusiasm for the film. And Geoffrey Rush seems unaware of what’s happening.
In an interview with MTV, Rush seemed to be on board and ready to shoot next spring, so that he could reprise his role as Captain Barbossa, but didn’t know much beyond that. Rush told MTV:
“They’re waiting for the screenplay writers to put together something that’s beyond the trilogy, take it off into a new direction so that it’s fresh and hopefully really interesting for an audience, that they’re not going to just sausage-machine out something else, which wouldn’t be so good.”
The film is presumably based on the 1988 novel “On Stranger Tides” by Tim Powers, but no details have been announced beside the [...]

For those of you dying to know what the new title of the “Pirates 4″ movie is, you don’t have to wait any longer. According to HitFix, Disney revealed the title at the D23 Expo: “On Stranger Tides”. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” to be exact. And as you can see from the title treatment below, the film is due out in the Summer of 2011.
As previously reported, “Chicago” director Rob Marshall will be stepping behind the camera for the fourth “Pirates” movie, replacing Gore Verbinski, who had previously left the project to pursue other ventures. Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow, and according to rumors, the plot has Jack pursuing the mythical Fountain of Youth and facing steampunk-powered villains.
Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, the other two stars from the previous three films, will be no-shows. This will be entirely Jack Sparrow’s adventures.
According to the LATimes, Jack Sparrow himself showed up at the D23 Expo in [...]

It’s a “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″ rumored storyline we’ve heard about before, albeit a while back (here), and now it’s resurfaced again, so there must be something to it, right? If it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, then it must be an effeminate pirate. Possibly. So, according to Hollywood-Elsewhere, they’re “hearing” (i.e. someone may or may not know something told them) that the fourth “Pirates” movie will indeed involve Jack Sparrow going in search of the Fountain of Youth, where he will run afoul of a villain utilizing steampunk technology.
HE adds:
There will also be some kdin (sic) of Captain Nemo-type villain utilizing new-style technology. Sounds like they’re invoking the “steampunk” style we’ve seen gain more and more of a foothold in genre conventions, including Comic Con.
I haven’t a clue what that last sentence means. Is Comic Con utilizing steampunk now? I didn’t see anything like that while I was there, or were guys riding around in [...]

With franchise director Gore Verbinski having moved on to other (not necessarily bigger or better) things, notably a recently scrubbed “Bioshock” movie, Disney and uber producer Jerry Bruckheimer have been looking for a replacement director for their “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″ for a while now. According to Variety, they may have found their man: song and dance guy Rob Marshall, most famous for the musical “Chicago” and his followup, another musical called “Nine”. Apparently it’s pretty much a done deal, and an official announcement is probably forthcoming.
While at first blush it doesn’t look like such a great fit, keep in mind that the “Pirates” movies, especially with the recent entries, aren’t exactly grim and gritty stuff. They’re fluffy, flights-of-fancy special effects-driven action-adventures. Marshall should be able to adapt just fine. What would a director have to do on a “Pirates 4″ movie, anyway, except point the camera at Johnny Depp and shout “Action”?
Also according to the trade, Disney is [...]

Everybody knows Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are making a “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″, even if it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet. The prospect of the sequel not happening is about zil to none, though at this point it’s looking like it might take a while. Likewise, Johnny Depp is definitely coming back as Jack Sparrow, even if Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not. So what about Gore Verbinksi, the director behind all three “Pirates” films? Ol Gore was talking about coming back too, but he has now officially announced that he’s done with the “Pirates” movies.
Variety reports that Verbinski has told Bruckheimer and Disney that he’s off “Pirates 4″, saying:
“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.”

Russell Brand is the funniest British comedian to ever walk the Earth. Or at least that’s what the dozen or so commenters in my previous Russell Brand article would like me to know, right after they insult me. Cause, you know, nothing convinces someone more than insulting them into agreeing with you. So the last time we heard from him, Brand was being rumored as playing Jack Sparrow’s brother in the latest “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. Still so? Probably not so much.
Via WENN, the hilarious Brit comedian tells Access Hollywood (probably in a very funny voice, cause, you know, he’s brilliant and junk) about the rumored role:
“There’s been some talk of doing a Pirates movie. But, I’ve got eight other things to do including (new movie) Get Him To The Greek with Judd Apatow… So I don’t know if there’ll be time to be a pirate, I’ve got enough of that in me private life.

As such, even the British tabloids can sometimes get a major movie casting announcement right. Maybe. So what’s the latest from Across the Pond? That unfathomably unfunny funnyman Russell Brand (you remember him, don’t you? The Brit that single-handedly made this year’s MTV VMAs 200 times more excruciating and awful than it would normally have been?) has signed up to star as Jack Sparrow’s brother in the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. Which, if you’re keeping track, would be the fourth installment.

Who are you to break our hearts and shatter our dreams — except you would probably know more than we do. Ahem. Anyways, according to Terry Rossio, who along with partner Ted Elliott, wrote all three Pirates movies, not to mention seemingly every other successful Hollywood movie franchise since the dawn of time as well, all the rumors you’ve been hearing about Pirates 4 are bullshit. Rossio doesn’t go on to say anymore than that, except that Disney is “too protective of their franchises for that sort of thing”, whatever that means.
Rossio posts his comments at his writing site Wordplayer’s message board, which I used to visit pretty regularly when I was in school, and I would recommend for anyone interested in screenwriting. Rossio has a lot of really good stuff there, and all for free, to boot.

Here’s my verdict on Hollywood actors making huge and outrageous salaries (because I know you’re all dying to hear it): more power to them. They should get what they can get. Just as with athletes in the sports world. Why should we begrudge them earning obscene amounts of money for what is essentially 3 or 4 months of work? Sure, I’d like to see them do more than just pretend in front of a camera for their money, like clean out my basement, or pull those damn weeds from my backyard. But even so, and if the market will bear it, they should make as much as they can. Hell, whenever blogging in your underwear surrounded by empty cans of Red Bull becomes as prestigious as starring in “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″, I want to make $56 million, too!
Keira Knightley has already said previously that she doubts she’ll ever be returning to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, and she’s repeated that train of thought one more time. Although Knightley couches her response to the question in very glowing and positive terms (”amazing”, “wonderful”, “magical”, “lots and lots of money” — okay, maybe not so much the last one), she’s reiterated again that it’s very doubtful she would be slipping on Elizabeth Swann’s corset for one more swashbuckling adventure. One should keep in mind, though, that judging by the question posed to Knightley by MTV (in the video below), that her response was probably made before the official announcement by Johnny Depp and Disney that they were indeed going forward with a fourth “Pirates” movie. At least, that’s how I read it.
Knightley said this to MTV:
“They were completely amazing, but I think I can’t wear corsets for a while,” she said. “I had an amazing journey with those [...]

So, er, I guess this means Johnny Depp won’t be playing The Riddler in “Batman Begins 3″, huh? Probably not, unless Johnny Depp doesn’t need to eat or sleep, because the man currently has his hands full with three major projects in the coming years. The biggest one of all, of course, is the fourth installment in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, where Depp has confirmed that he will return as Captain Jack Sparrow. Meanwhile, Depp will also be playing Tonto in Jerry Bruckheimer’s sure-to-be-massively budgeted “Lone Ranger” movie. But wait! If you thought two mega Disney movies was more than one man can bear, Depp will also be playing the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s version of “Alice in Wonderland”. Seriously, where does Johnny Depp find time to see his kids and sleep with his wife?
Variety has all the Johnny Depp news you can use:
Depp has agreed to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a fourth [...]

If the boys over at AICN are correct, it looks like 2011 may be the year of Disney, because the company has a ton of anticipated movies launching, all in the same year. One of them is the fourth installment of the wildly popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, which is tentatively scheduled for a 2011 release. More theories about the film’s plot below.
More:
In regards to PIRATES, two dramatically conflicting assessments about how a fourth film might be approached have been making the rounds.
Some indications suggest the film’s story would be far more contained than its predecessors, allowing for a budget-friendly downsizing.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there’s been unsubstantiated talk that a fourth film would go the other way completely…think in terms of ultra fantastical (dinosaurs, Jules Verne-esque floating fortresses, etc.)
I don’t see them going small with this thing, at least not if they want to keep their audience. Come big or don’t come at all, I say.

I know you kids love your “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″ news, so here’s the latest about a potential plotline for the sure-to-be-made (seriously, after the moolah the second and third installment made, are you really surprise Bruckheimer is going to usher this thing forth come hell or high water?), involving Jack Sparrow and Barbarossa in what could, possibly, be a “buddy movie” on the high seas.
More (via):
Now given that Bruckheimer & Disney do eventually hope to put a “Pirates 4″ into production (A film that — I hear — would toss the Elizabeth & Will characters over the side in favor of doing a bawdy buddy picture which would star Jack Sparrow & Barbossa. Where both captains of the Black Pearl would initially be competing for the exact same prize. But eventually all the double crossing would have to stop as these two rivals were then forced to join forces in order to defeat some supernatural terror), I’d say [...]

In the canon of uber producers, Jerry Bruckheimer stands alone. Oh sure, Joel Silver may bump up against Bruckheimer’s glass ceiling every now and then, but with junk like “The Reaping” and “The Invasion”, the spread between the two producers are getting wider and wider. Bruckheimer recently sat down to talk with MTV about two future projects — “Lone Ranger”, which is being envisioned as a possible franchise ala “Pirates of the Caribbean”, and “Pirates 4″. Read on.
About “Lone Ranger”, Bruckheimer says that the new franchise won’t be an “update”, but instead more of an origins story that adheres to the character’s original traits, i.e. this ain’t gonna be Captain Jack on a horse, jack.
More:
But don’t think that means the titular hero will be anything like Captain Jack, cautions Bruckheimer, who revealed that the story wouldn’t be an update, but instead something of an origin story. That means adhering to the strict moral code laid down by “Lone Ranger” creator [...]

Or is that just an actor doing a pre-emptive “No” so they want the studio to jack up the paycheck? Hey, it’s not like it’s never happened before (re: the Spider-Man kids); in fact, it probably happens all the time when you’re talking about a movie franchise as lucrative as the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. In any case, during a press conference for her new movie “Atonement”, someone asked Knightley about coming back for a “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″. Read her response below…
Says Knightley (via):
“I can’t imagine doing another one. That was an amazing experience, really was, totally extraordinary, but I think three for me is probably enough.”
Not exactly a “No, no way in Hell” reply. More of a, “Hmm, probably not, unless, you know, we’re talking ‘back up the brink truck to my Malibu house kind of paycheck here’.” At this point, I can’t see anyone who isn’t a total idiot hopping off the “Pirates” film if [...]

The good fellas over at Cinema Blend thinks they know what the sure-to-be-made (big piles of money will make uncertainties VERY certain) “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″ sequel will be all about, and who is coming back and who isn’t. (Hint: Johnny Depp is coming back. Like, DUH. They can’t make a “Pirates” hamburger without asking this guy to front it; he’s that associated with the franchise by now.) So what’s Captain Jack Sparrow going to be up to in the fourth installment? Flying, diving, searching — you know, pirate stuff.
Says Cinema Blend:
That’s right, Pirates 4 will cast aside Will and Elizabeth to make it an all Jack Sparrow movie. That won’t be the only change Disney is planning to make when the series continues though. Our scooper says, “the ending of Pirates 3, the fountain of youth story might not be the only story they might used the next pirate’s film. The fountain story could used in another form [...]
