Well this is a first: according to studio estimates (and I can’t stress that enough, studio estimates, which means they could and will probably change when actual numbers come in on Monday), the battle of the CG movies ended in a tie over the weekend. “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”, the third in the franchise, scored the same $42.5 million in its first 3-day weekend as did “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” in its second week. Again, these are preliminary, studio estimates. One of these movies will come out on top (albeit by a very small margin) come Monday. Until then, it looks like people couldn’t decide whether to watch CG robots or CG animals over the weekend, so did both in equal measure. Keep in mind, though, that “Ice Age” opened earlier in the week, adding an extra $25 million to its coffers and giving it a final total of $67.5 million for the entire week.

This week’s new movies include two major Hollywod releases, Michael Mann’s Depression-era shoot’em up “Public Enemies” and the third installment in the CG franchise “Ice Age”, which your kids will surely love because, well, it’s got cute furry CG animals and it’s in 3D. On the limited front, there are two foreign films, an American indie drama from 2006, and yet another Nia Vardalos romantic comedy. Our full preview of the week’s offerings below.

“Public Enemies”: Johnny Depp stars as notorious depression-era gangster John Dillinger, whose charismatic crime spree made him a folk hero to the masses, but a public enemy chased by a fledgling FBI led by an obsessive J. Edger Hoover (Billy Crudup) and G-man Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale). Directed by Michael Mann. Rated R for gangster violence and some language.

Seven talky clips from Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies” have surfaced. They’re not nearly as exciting as that previous clip we posted, unfortunately. Each one is about a minute long, and they don’t spoil anything as far as I know. Enjoy.
The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.
Starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Emilie de Ravin, Channing Tatum, Marion Cotillard, Leelee Sobieski, Billy Crudup, Giovanni Ribisi, and Stephen Graham. Michael Mann (”Heat”) directs.
Dillinger and company shoot up the joint July 1.

Two clips courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, the first one featuring an assault on John Dillinger’s safehouse by Christian Bale’s Melvin Purvis from Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies”. It’s a pretty wild and brutal minute long clip, featuring a ton of ammo and Tommy Gun action. Really cool stuff. The second clip is from Chris Nahon’s live-acton “Blood: The Last Vampire”, featuring Gianna Jun’s Saya taking on a vampire while hanging from a truck that’s about to plummet to its doom. I’m not so sure about the vampire. Also, I don’t recall the scene being in the original anime, but then again, it looks like they veered pretty heavily from it, so no surprises there.

The more I see of Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies”, the more I realize this is yet another movie where Christian Bale is going to be overshadowed by his co-star. I’m sensing a pattern here. Whenever Bale does a movie with two A-list male actors, he always seems to get the shaft, playing the boring, dull guy instead of the charming, charismatic guy. See his roles in “3:10 to Yuma” with Russell Crowe, the recent “Terminator Salvation” with Sam Worthington, and now “Public Enemies” with Johnny Depp for examples. If he’s not careful, Christian Bale may end up being the go-to guy for buddy movies where he’s relegated to the Dull Not Fun Guy. Then again, ol Bale is pretty serious about his roles, so maybe this is his thing. Always the Batman, never the Joker, as it were. Anyways, a new batch of images from the movie below.

When your name comes before the title of your latest movie, even if it’s a series of character posters where you’re nowhere to be seen in most of them. Yup, such is the life of being Johnny Depp. It’s a wonder the guy doesn’t go around shooting people in the face thinking he could get away with it. Because, you know, he probably could, as popular as he is now. Anyways, three new character posters for Michael Mann (and Johnny Depp’s, of course) “Public Enemies” have surfaced online.

If you thought the first trailer for Michael Mann’s Prohibition-era gangster movie “Public Enemies” was hot stuff, the second full-length trailer should blow the doors off the barn. That means it’s really, really good. Too bad there won’t be any possible sequel to this one, because Depp’s John Dillinger looks like he has the makings of a franchise character ala Jack Sparrow. The dude oozes charisma throughout the trailer, and one presumes, throughout the movie. It’s brilliant casting if you think about it: the charming Johnny Depp as “bad guy” John Dillinger, and the stern looking Christian Bale as “good guy” Melvin Purvis. Here’s the second, glorious trailer for “Public Enemies”.

You probably may have figured it out, but any movie where Johnny Depp plays the bad guy means the bad guy ain’t all that bad. Sure, he robs banks, likes that Tommy gun of his an awful lot, and he messes with the law, but let’s face it, the law is kinda a jerk. Or at least, that’s how the trailer for Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies” presents its two main characters — Johnny Depp as bank robber John Dillinger and Christian Bale as the G-Man after him.
As part of their 2009 preview of some highly anticipated upcoming big movies coming to a big screen near you, Entertainment Weekly has got three new images from Michael Mann’s period gangster flick “Public Enemies”, starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as G-Man Melvin Purvis. Unfortunately the images are not of the high resolution sort, as is the EW way, so these will have to do until something better comes around. (By the way, why do you think EW always makes their exclusive images so small? Do you think they’re trying to save bandwidth or something? I don’t get it.)
Via EW:
Directed by Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider), and costarring Christian Bale as the dashing federal agent Melvin Purvis, Public Enemies might sound like a blood-soaked chapter of ancient history. But the film’s themes couldn’t be more timely: Dillinger was sticking up banks at a time when people weren’t exactly rooting for the banks. As a result, he [...]

Michael Mann does gangsters. With Tommy guns instead of M16s, this time around. Should be great fun, right? And look at the cast: Johnny Depp as the bank-robbin’, FBI-shoot-out gettin’ into John Dillinger, and Christian Bale as legendary G-man Melvin Purvis, the fed chasing him. Two great actors in a movie with Tommy guns directed by the guy who gave us “Heat”. Man, if you can’t get excited for that, you need to get yourself a pulse, because this thing has the makings of a pretty awesome action movie in 2009. So here’s your first official look at Depp and Bale in character.
Described as a sort of Heat II, the film tells the story of charismatic criminal gang leader John Dillinger (Depp) and determined lawman Melvin Purvis (Bale), the FBI agent tracking him down. Also in the cast is Marion Cotillard as Dillinger’s girlfriend, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, David Wenham, Leelee Sobieski and Emilie de Ravin, with Billy Crudup as [...]

His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyonefrom his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s ganglater including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham)thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI.
I’m always a little surprised when movie productions continue to cast actors even after a film has started shooting. You would expect that the better way to do things would be to hire all the actors, and THEN start shooting. But hey, what do I know, I’m typing this while sitting at my computer in my underwear. Anyhoo. Lost’s Emilie De Ravin has finally gotten off the island and joined the cast of Michael Mann’s period gangster movie “Public Enemies.”
Variety reports:
Emilie De Ravin (“Lost”) has been cast in a supporting role in Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies,” starring Johnny Depp. She’ll next be seen in “The Perfect Game” and “Ball Don’t Lie,” a selection in this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
No word on what role she’ll play, but considering that Emilie De Ravin (pictured, below) has that innocent look about her, I’m guessing an innocent farm girl? Or an innocent city girl? Either/or. It would be cool if she turned out to [...]

By currently starring as Dillinger in Michael Mann’s Depression-era gangster flick, “Public Enemies”. And just who will be chasing him? No other than Christian Bale. AICN has some pictures of Depp as Dillinger, robbing a bank with a Thompson and looking spiffy doing it. Head on below for the pictures.
The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.
Starring Christian Bale and Johnny Depp, and directed by Michael Mann.

For someone whose name is a total mystery to me, John Ortiz sure is one busy actor. Besides joining the cast of Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies” as Al Capone mob enforcer Frank Nitti, Ortiz will be seen in the upcoming “The Fast and the Furious 4″ movie with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. He talks more about his roles with MTV.
More:
“I’m going to be shooting ‘Public Enemies,’ that Michael Mann’s directing with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale,” said the “American Gangster” and “Miami Vice” actor. “And then, next is ‘[The Fourth] Fast and the Furious’ with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker coming back.”
“I’m playing Frank Nitti, who’s a Sicilian gangster,” Ortiz said of the man they called “The Enforcer”…
In real life, Nitti served as the right-hand man for Al Capone during his heyday, only to eventually go to prison and then commit suicide after his release. “He was already kind of established,” Ortiz said of the timeline in which “Public [...]

Michael Mann’s Depression-era gangster movie “Public Enemies” has added new names to its cast, including an Oscar-nominated actress from France in Marion Cotillard (”La Vie en rose”). Also joining the cast, which already includes headlining stars Christian Bale and Johnny Depp, are Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, Stephen Dorff and Jason Clarke.
More:
The Oscar-nominated “La Vie en rose” star Cotillard will play Billie Frechette, the lover of the country’s most notorious gangster, John Dillinger (Depp).
Tatum will play outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd, Ribisi will play Alvin Karpis, Dorff is near a deal to play Homer Van Meter, and Clarke will play John “Red” Hamilton. That quartet repped a Dillinger gang that knocked off banks all over the Midwest during the Depression.
Bale plays Melvin Purvis, who was tapped by FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover to lead a manhunt that established the FBI as the country’s first federal police force after the G-Men killed Dillinger outside the Biograph Theater in 1934.

You got Christian Bale, you got Johnny Depp, and you got Michael Mann orchestrating it all. How could a 1930’s movie like “Public Enemies” not be good? The boys over at Latino Review have a review of the film’s script, and overall, the grade seems to be a big thumbs up.
Here is the reviewer’s encapsulation:
I honestly can’t say enough good things about this. I loved it. In terms of comparison with the recent American Gangster – I honestly was a little let down by American Gangster; I liked it, but it was a little underwhelming. I think that Public Enemies is going to be everything American Gangster wasn’t for me – the story is tighter, the drama and romance better written, and the set pieces just rife with potential.
He adds this about the ending:
Honestly, the only criticism I would have for Public Enemies is the ending. I can forgive a weak film with a great ending, but I have a [...]

Christian Bale and Johnny Depp in the same movie? Playing opposite one another? Directed by Michael Mann? Tommy guns aplenty and fedoras to top it all off? Ooooooh boy, this is gonna be a good one! Friday’s best news has Bale in negotiations to star opposite Depp in Mann’s gangster flick “Public Enemies.
More:
An adaptation of Brian Burrough’s book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43,” the story follows the government’s attempt to stop the criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Depp is playing Dillinger.
Bale would play Melvin Purvis, who led the FBI’s manhunt for Dillinger and captured more public enemies than any other agent in FBI history. It was Purvis who uttered, “Stick ‘em up, Johnny” when he confronted Dillinger in Chicago.
Bale will shoot “Public Enemies” and then jump onto his mega commitment to the new Terminator trilogy, where he’ll be playing John Connor.
The real Melvin Purvis

Johnny Depp likes the cut of notorious John Dillinger’s Tommy gun, because he’s just signed up to star in the Depression Era-set movie “Public Enemies” for director Michael Mann. The two apparently agreed to work together after Depp’s “Shantaram” was postponed by the writer’s strike. A notorious gangster of the 1930s, Dillinger was considered an outlaw to some, a Robin Hood to others.
More:
Drama is set during the great crime wave of 1933-34, when the government’s attempts to stop Depression-era criminal legends such as John Dillilnger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd transformed J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI into the country’s first federal police force. Mann wrote the script, based on Bryan Burrough’s 2004 tome.
Depp will play John Dillinger, considered the most notorious gangster of the era. Mann and his Forward Pass will produce with Kevin Misher and his Misher Films. Tribeca’s Jane Rosenthal will be exec producer.
There are two reasons to love the idea behind “Public Enemies”: It has Johnny [...]
