Once, twice, three times the charm? No so much. The first “Punisher” movie didn’t do a whole lot (in fact, it did so little it didn’t even make it to theaters), the second did even less, and the third, well, have no fear, if you missed the movie when it was in theaters, or you saw it and loved it so much (which would put you in the minority), Lionsgate is releasing “Punisher: War Zone” on DVD March 17 in a 2-disk special edition available in standard and Blu Ray format. Full DVD specs and box art after the jump.
From Lionsgate:
One of Marvel comic’s most popular superhero action franchises returns with the March 17, 2009 DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Punisher: War Zone. Frank Castle is back and it is six years into his vengeance driven zeal as “The Punisher” and he is now set to take on the mob. The 2-Disc Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray [...]

OUCH. That’s the pain Lionsgate must be feeling right now after they saw the box office receipts for “Punisher: War Zone” over the weekend. The reboot/sequel/whatever opened wide in a respectable 2,508 theaters this Friday, but landed with a solid thud at eighth place with a meager $4 million in its debut weekend. To add insult to injury, the (probably very awful) “Cadillac Records”, starring Beyonce Knowles, made just $500 thousand less than Frank Castle’s latest rampage in theaters even though it opened in about 2000 less screens. Once more: OUCH.
The Christmas comedy “Four Christmases” maintained the top spot with $18 million, good for $70 million in two weeks of release, and once again reiterating what everyone already knows — chicks will watch anything with Reese Witherspoon, as long as no one’s being tortured onscreen. Teen vampire romance “Twilight” still managed a respectable $13 million in its third week, bringing the total to a whopping $138 million. Not bad for [...]

Moviegoers not prone to surf the Internet scouring for the latest movie news on an upcoming comic book movie probably has no clue that Lexi Alexander, the director of “Punisher: War Zone” is a woman. A very attractive and fetching female at that. In fact, they might be thinking that this Lexi guy is a pretty sick individual after the credits on “War Zone” have rolled, as the film is one brutal, balls-to-the-wall violence-a-thon. You know the type of things only guys are supposed to like and actually produce. If you can think of a way to kill a man (Knife to the head? Check. Chair leg to the eye? Covered. Arrow through the neck? Got ya covered.), Lexi Alexander has beaten you to the punch and put it into “War Zone”. This is, as promised, a comic book movie patterned after the brutally violent Garth Ennis Punisher comic books of recent years. Needless to say, kids need not attend.

Holy shit, the Punisher just shot some dude in the face and the dude’s head, like, totally exploded. Then someone gets knifed in the throat, and another dude takes the wrong end of a chair in one eye. Now I don’t know if all of these gore-filled scenes will be making appearances in the “Punisher: War Zone” movie set to bow in theaters all across this glorious nation of ours tomorrow, but if they are, then Lexi Alexander might have done something I didn’t think was possible — make a Punisher movie that DOESN’T suck. Of course, I’m going to reserve judgment for the finished version, but until then, enjoy this Red Band blood-fueled clip from “Punisher: War Zone”.
Infamous vigilante, anti-hero Frank Castle (Ray Stevenson) is six years into his vengeance driven zeal as the Punisher when he brutally assaults a “beat the rap” party for notorious mob boss Gaitano Cesare. During the course of the massacre, he hideously disfigures [...]

With “Punisher: War Zone” due out in theaters this Friday, director Lexi Alexander has been making the PR rounds when someone finally got around to asking her the question we’ve all been talking about: What was the diddly yo about her going all Alan Smithee on the movie? Props to the guys from Sci Fi Wire, who actually asked the question when I don’t think anyone else in the ass kissing world of entertainment *cough*journalism*cough* has even bothered to approach it, probably for fear that they’ll lose their press junket pass for good, and you know how good those press junket food are. Well, I don’t know, cause I’ve never been on one, but I assume there are some advantages to being flown out to watch screenings and chat with the stars and what have you.
Anyways, here’s what Alexander said in response to Sci Fi Wire’s question regarding the whole brouhaha behind the scenes of “Punisher: War Zone”:

Is it just me? Why does the new “Punisher” movie look like the entire thing takes place in some weird vampire nightclub in a seedy section of New York? Mind you, not that I’ve ever been to such a place, but the whole color scheme of “Punisher: War Zone” looks … off. What is this, a bad MTV music video for the latest crappy pop music sensation or a sequel to a movie about a badass killing machine with a skull on his chest? I guess we’ll find out when Frank Castle dishes out some punishment come this December. Until then, check out a fresh new batch of “Punisher: War Zone” images, featuring our first looks at bad guy Jigsaw in all his ugly glory and Julie Benz.

Well, ain’t this interesting. After all the brouhaha around “Punisher: War Zone” (and not the good kind, either; you know, the kind that makes you want to see the movie? This is the bad kind, the kind that makes you want to avoid it entirely, and leaves a big lump in your throat, like you’ve just swallowed a shovel full of horse shit), it appears Lionsgate and director Lexi Alexander have kissed and made up. Maybe. This reeks of damage control to me, and although there are still people on the net who believes the antagonistic, and oftentimes vicious rumor mongering by all involved in the production is just a lame attempt at viral marketing, I don’t think Hollywood people are creative enough to attempt something so daring and, as it turned out, completely counter-intuitive to their cause.
In any case, here’s a new video of Lexi Alexander, back in the editing bay of “Punisher: War Zone” it would appear, [...]

Is the director still onboard? Did the studio butcher the film for a meek PG-13 rating? Is the soundtrack all rap metal? Who knows what’s true anymore when it comes to Frank Castle’s ongoing war in the cinemas. What we do know, though, is that the film has indeed gotten a “R” rating, and that director Lexi Alexander still hasn’t come out of hiding to comment on the film’s, shall we say, tumultuous road back to the big screen. But hey, ignore all that, because Lionsgate just sent us a groovy little new poster for “War Zone”. This is one of those fancy lenticular posters that’s supposed to, you know, do fancy stuff when you look at it. I think.
Waging his one-man war on the world of organized crime, ruthless vigilante-hero Frank Castle sets his sights on overeager mob boss Billy Russoti. After Russoti is left horribly disfigured by Castle, he sets out for vengeance under his new alias: Jigsaw. [...]

Apparently both “Max Payne” and “Punisher: War Zone” are so punishingly violent and brutal that the MPAA has slapped both films with an “R” rating. Fans of both the Punisher and Max Payne should be rejoicing at this news, although I’m not sure if “Max Payne” director John Moore would share your enthusiasm, since the director has gone on record (and some would say, above and beyond) stating that he desperately wants a PG-13 rating for his movie. I suppose you could now say that John Moore is in … payne? Ahem. Sorry.
THR lists “Punisher: War Zone” as R for:
Rated for pervasive strong brutal violence, language and some drug use.
While “Max Payne” got slapped with the R for:
Rated for violence, drug content, some sexuality and brief strong language.
See, John Moore? The MPAA has already thrown down the gauntlet. Now don’t you think it’s time to go back to the editing room and include that nude scene of Mila Kunis that [...]

Oh, Frank Castle. Will you ever find a filmmaker who “gets” you, or a studio that “understands” your need to wipe every criminal off the face of the Earth? One can only hope. In any case, remember all those rumors about “War Zone”? One had director Lexi Alexander being kicked off the project, another had the movie going PG-13, and still another posited that zombies had eaten the brains of everyone involved in the project. Wait, no, scratch the last part. Anyways, the film’s cinematographer, one Steve Gainer, has come out to publicly deny much of the bad rumor surrounding the project.
Screenrant found this from Gainer, posted on the Raw Board forum:
    * Lexi is not off the film.
    * Lexi is still involved in the edit process.
    * The film is not (nor could it ever be) PG-13.
    * He saw a cut that ran 91 minutes.

You guys remember all those articles on the net, and on this site, that chronicled the supposed departure of director Lexi Alexander as director of “Punisher: War Zone”? And how some believed it was a ploy for publicity? Well you can probably safely dismiss the “ploy” angle now, if this news that Lionsgate is eyeballing a PG-13 rating for the latest “Punisher” movie turns out to be true. Seems that the success of “The Dark Knight” (it’s also rated PG-13) has convinced Lionsgate that their movie about a violent vigilante who kills, on a bad day, 30 gangsters and petty muggers, can also get by with a PG-13 rating. Obviously, right?
Here’s Latino Review with the rumor of the day:
Following up on an earlier article, one of my contacts deep within the bowels of Hollywood and close to the Punisher: War Zone project (source will not be named. Sorry!) told me today that the big fight over the Punisher project is [...]

Last week rumors that there were major problems on the “Punisher: War Zone” set, which included the booting of director Lexi Alexander from the movie, made the rounds, and seemed to have been confirmed by the absence of Alexander at Comic Con. Alexander herself seemed to have all but confirmed the news by removing all mention of the Punisher from her website. Basically, all signs pointed to the rumor being true. Then, earlier this week, CHUD wrote an article claiming that the whole hullabaloo was in fact a marketing ploy to generate publicity for the movie. Not a whole lot of people picked up the article, mostly because, well, it didn’t make a whole lot of sense.
But first, let’s start with CHUD’s article:
With Punisher: War Zone, all of the signs point to a worst-case scenario: behind the scenes infighting, recuts, honeymoons, studio spin and the like. All the dust kicked up at Comic-Con has got everybody in a tizzy, but [...]

So I kinda took off early on Friday because, you know, I had a hot date and junk (and of course by “hot date” I mean I had a hot pocket cooking in the microwave), so I missed a lot of news that landed on the Internet that day. One of those big news was that director Lexi Alexander and Lionsgate (with Marvel Studios in the wing) were having something of a spat. Namely: Lexi Alexander is now rumored to have been kicked off the project, and that Lionsgate is bringing new people in to recut the film. All of this, it would appear, stemmed from the negative reaction to the first trailer for “Punisher: War Zone”, the reboot/not-really-sequel to 2004’s “The Punisher” with Thomas Jane.
The news of Lexi Alexander’s departure from “War Zone” comes via the geeks over at AICN, who had this to say on the mess:

So you weren’t completely sold on the Punisher and his second coming when we showed you the first “Punisher: War Zone” trailer, huh? Well join the club. Not a whole lot of people were sold, although I thought it was pretty groovy myself, but hey, what do I know, I’m typing this while in my mom’s basement wearing nothing but my boxers. In any case, for the unconvinced, Lionsgate has released two new spanking trailers, a second “all purpose” version that reveals more of the origins of the Punisher’s nemesis, Jigsaw (boy is he fugly!), and a bloody as all get-out Red Band trailer that contains all the exploding heads, eye punching, and general bloody whoopass you’ve come to expect from your modern day vigilante with big ass gun characters. And oh yeah, there’s also a new poster for the movie. Did you hear? Vengance now has a name.

In Lexi Alexander’s reboot/sorta-sequel to Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2004 “The Punisher”, “War Zone” swaps a leading man and the bright, tropic daylight of Florida for the gritty, filthy alleyways and nights of New York City. Basically, Alexander is giving you Frank Castle in his natural environment. (Seriously, what was Hensleigh thinking with his version of The Punisher? Castle and Sunny Florida. Christ.) Anyhoo. Ray Stevenson leads his one-man assault on crime and other assorted baddies in “War Zone”, four new posters of which have arrived from Lionsgate.
Waging his one-man war on the world of organized crime, ruthless vigilante-hero Frank Castle sets his sights on overeager mob boss Billy Russoti. After Russoti is left horribly disfigured by Castle, he sets out for vengeance under his new alias: Jigsaw. With the “Punisher Task Force” hot on his trail and the FBI unable to take Jigsaw in, Frank must stand up to the formidable army that Jigsaw has recruited before more of his [...]

I got me some high hopes for Lexi Alexander’s “Punisher: War Zone”, even if this first-ever teaser trailer for the flick doesn’t exactly do it for me. Okay, there are some nice shots in there, like the one where Frank (played this time around by Roman badass Ray Stevenson) is gearing up to face off against some baddies on the other side of a wall, but overall, the teaser doesn’t WOW. You know, that kind of mind-blowing, “Oh God, the world is going to blow up in two seconds, and I forgot to wear clean underwear” type of wow.
(In fact, I have such high hopes for this movie, I’m even going to pretend I didn’t notice the totally blatant cribbing of Troy Duffy’s “The Boondock Saints” in the hanging-from-the-ceiling-and-shooting bit that the Punisher pulls about halfway into the teaser. And yeah, while I’m well aware that John Woo has done that numerous times in his Chow Yun Fat movies, [...]

Frank Castle, aka the Punisher (this time played by Ray Stevenson, taking over for Thomas Jane), is back, and he’s ready to put up an impressive bodycount. From everything I’ve read, and straight from the mouth of director Lexi Alexander, the Punisher we’ll be seeing in “War Zone” is supposed to take his cue from the comics, meaning an impressive bodycount, and no skulking around the bad guy’s family planting evidence, like the last Punisher did.
Starring Ray Stevenson (HBO’s “Rome”) as Punisher, PUNISHER: WAR ZONE is directed by Lexi Alexander and produced by Gale Anne Hurd and Ari Arad. Waging his one-man war on the world of organized crime, ruthless vigilante-hero Frank Castle sets his sights on overeager mob boss Billy Russoti. After Russoti is left horribly disfigured by Castle, he sets out for vengeance under his new alias: Jigsaw.
Color me shocked. Lexi Alexander, director of “Punisher: War Zone” has updated her blog yet again. Wow! What does this make, twice in, like, three months? Holy smokes! (Just kidding, Lexi, please don’t come to my house and kick my ass. I’m delicate.) Anyhoo. According to Lexi Alexander, the powers that be have moved the release date for “Punisher: War Zone” to December 5th, 2008, just in time to douse Christmas and Jesus in buckets of blood because, you know, they have it coming anyway.
More:
They also moved our release date to December 5th, which is, according to my reps, a much, much better date. I myself would have thought that people will think twice about going to see an extremely violent movie the closer it gets to Jesus’ B-day, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or whatever other holy holiday you’re celebrating. Well, the box office records prove different and instead, all you sick fucks get more blood thirsty that time of year. [...]

Yeah, I don’t know what Maxim.com is doing interviewing actors from comic book movies, either, but God bless’em, because this is a great interview with Ray Stevenson (pictured, left), star of the upcoming “Punisher: War Zone”, the sorta sequel to Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2004 film. In the interview, Stevenson opines on what went wrong with the original, and you know what? I said the same thing when I reviewed the movie four years ago: it just didn’t look right. And yeah, setting the whole thing in Sunny Tampa Bay didn’t exactly help matters, either.
My favorite passage from the interview, and so true to the comic book character:
Absolutely. It’s such a complex character. I love the fact that he’s not a superhero—bullets don’t bounce off. He’s just a dark soul on a mission. One of my main concerns was that it was an incredibly violent piece of work. In meeting with [the producers] I said, “I do not want people walking [...]

Ray Stevenson sure is looking a lot like the Punisher, I’ll have to admit (a grittier, tougher, ex-Marine Punisher, just like in the “Big Nothing” as drawn by Mike Zeck), and now the movie has finally gotten off its ass and put up an official site. Nothing there right now except for two pictures that you’ve already seen, and a “register” function that isn’t active yet. Check it out anyway, though. Or not. Hey, it’s your second, not mine, do with it what you wish.
Continuing his crusade to punish violent criminals in America, former FBI agent Frank Castle arrives in New York to take on a underworld boss who plots to take control of the underworld.
Ray Stevenson stars as Frank Castle, aka the vigilante The Punisher, in this reboot/sorta-sequel to the 2004 original starring Thomas Jane. Lexi Alexander directs.
