Lost among the ruckus slam-bang CGI of “Transformers” and the CGI cuisine of “Ratatouille” was the fact that Werner Herzog’s “Rescue Dawn”, a true-life Vietnam War movie, was one of the best reviewed films of 2007. The film scored an impressive 87% “fresh” reviews at Rotten Tomatoes, with 47 critics giving the film high marks, while only 7 dissenting. Our very own Brian Holcomb gave the film a glowing review (read it here), and heaped praise on Christian Bale’s performance. In fact, almost every critic was unanimous in praising Bale’s work as real-life German-American fighter pilot Dieter Dengler, an immigrant who embodied the best ideals of America.
“Rescue Dawn” tells the real-life story of U.S. fighter pilot Dieter Dengler (Bale), a German-American shot down and captured in Laos during the Vietnam War. Dengler organized a death-defying escape for a small band of POWs, including Duane Martin (Steven Zahn).
The film follows a young Dieter from Germany to America, then as an adult [...]

Please do not confuse “Rescue Dawn” with a mid-80s Cannon Group production of a Chuck Norris film. This isn’t the movie where Chuck emerges from a river firing a water logged AK-47 in super slow motion. Nor is it the one where soulman C. Thomas Howell models for I. Goldberg and yells out, “Wolverines!” Sorry, that was “Red Dawn”. Still, no one can really be blamed for this confusion, given the generic action film title and the hard sell trailer that advertises explosions. This is actually a Werner Herzog film and no matter how MGM wants to misrepresent it, there’s no way to turn this unique Vietnam war drama into anything else.
That’s because there is no one in the world like Werner Herzog. Yes, it’s true that we are all unique in some way, but Herzog must really be the first and last of his kind, a “Herzogian” perhaps. As a filmmaker, he fits into no real category with films [...]

Whoever is running the public relations campaign for the upcoming Christian Bale movie “Rescue Dawn” sure knows what they’re doing. From the trailers to the artwork to the release date to this latest media PR move — showing the film to American troops in Iraq. The guys behind “Rescue Dawn” know that opening the film on July 4th won’t make a dent in “Transformers” at all, but they’re counting on the patriotic moviegoers — the adult audience that has no interest in seeing giant alien robots duking it out. Pure counter-programming at work. I’m not saying it’s going to work, but I am saying there was no other move they COULD have gone with.
The press release:
Will help America¹s troops overseas celebrate Independence Day this year by screening the studio¹s Vietnam War biopic Rescue Dawn in Iraq. On July 4, 2007, over 2,000 troops stationed at Camp Anaconda, a large U.S. base near Balad, will screen the film highlighting the [...]

“Rescue Dawn” won’t see the light of day until July 4th, 2007, when it arrives at your local theaters just in time for Independence Day, but MGM wants to give away some movie swag before then. Up for grabs is a “Rescue Dawn” movie poster (like the one seen below), except this one will be signed by the film’s stars, Christian Bale and Steve Zahn, and its director, Werner Herzog. Three other lucky winners will get a “Rescue Dawn” official movie soundtrack. Contest rules are as follows…
“Rescue Dawn” tells the real-life story of U.S. fighter pilot Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale), a German-American shot down and captured in Laos during the Vietnam War. Dengler organized a death-defying escape for a small band of POWs, including Duane Martin (Steve Zahn).
All you have to do to enter this free giveaway is to email me at contest@beyondhollywood.com with the words, “Rescue Dawn Giveaway” in the subject line.
The contest will run through until July [...]

What’s that? You want more images of Christian Bale and Steve Zahn escaping from a Laotian prison during the Vietnam War? Well all you had to do was ask! “Rescue Dawn”, opening July 4th, 2007, tells the real-life story of U.S. fighter pilot Dieter Dengler (Bale), a German-American shot down and captured in Laos during the Vietnam War. Dengler organized a death-defying escape for a small band of POWs, including Duane Martin (Zahn). And much fun is had by all. Well not really. Maybe Zahn had fun, because Zahn is a pretty goofy guy and all…

True Vietnam War story about a German-American pilot shot down over Laos during the War, as directed by another German, director Werner Herzog (”Grizzly Man”). If you’ve seen the trailer (below) you’ll agree that Bale has delivered another killer performance, complete with a new personality. It’s funny, but whenever I see Bale in a movie, I think of him like a younger version of Gary Oldman; it’s always incredible to me how well these two guys can just literally lose themselves in a role and become nearly unrecognizable. Anyways, some new “Rescue Dawn” one-sheet poster, images, and trailer links arrived in my email this afternoon.
