With a leading lady (Natalie Portman) already signed up for his “passion project”, a little supernatural thriller called “Black Swan”, and the script for that much-discussed “Robocop” reboot still in the, er, not-quite-finished-and-probably-never-will-be stages, I don’t think anyone should be surprised to learn that director Darren Aronofsky will likely make “Swan” his next film post-”The Wrestler”. So what does this mean for MGM’s 2011 target date for “Robocop”?
Maybe a Aronofsky-less “Robocop” reboot, perhaps? According to THR’s Risky Biz Blog, MGM may not wait for Aronofsky, and rumor has the studio already sending out feelers for a replacement director. I’ve always found the idea of Aronofsky directing a movie like “Robocop” to be, well, sort of unnatural. Mind you, not that I don’t think Aronofsky is incapable, but it just never felt right to me, and the fact that Aronofsky has been bashing on the script with co-writer David Self for a while now may be the result of that improbable [...]

Earlier this week there were fanboy rumblings that Darren Aronofsky had jumped ship on a reboot of “Robocop”, based on something someone said when someone somewhere asked Aronofsky about the “Robocop” reboot. This caused enough of a fanboy fervor (i.e. people blogged about it), thus prompting the boys at AICN to put in a call to the man himself. (See, I would have called Aronofsky myself to confirm or deny this report, but, you know, I was busy with stuff.) According to Aronofsky, he isn’t going anywhere, but apparently neither is the script.
Says the “Pi” director:
“No, Still on it.”
See? Told you he said he was still on it. And I bet you didn’t believe me, did you? This’ll teach you.
Below: “Hi there, anyone home? I knocked but no one answered. Sorry about the wall.”

Admit it, when you first heard that Darren Aronofsky was going to write and direct a remake of “Robocop”, you fell out of your chair. It wasn’t just me, was it? What was Darren Aronofsky, of “Pi” and “The Wrestler” fame, doing directing a bloodbath action movie like “Robocop”? It just didn’t make a whole lot of sense. I still don’t think it’s going to happen myself, and this is another reason why: MGM has now scheduled the film for 2011, after giving out a 2010 date earlier, according to io9.
But fear now, Aronofsky fans: even if a “Robocop” reboot never happens, word is that a supernatural thriller called “Black Swan” set in the world of ballet (cause really, what’s more horrific than ballet?) may be on its way, thanks to the recent casting announcement of Natalie Portman in the leading role, according to THR. The thriller was originally conceived in 2007, with Aronofsky attached to direct for at [...]

Speaking of shocking movie news. If the idea of Stephen Chow starring in and directing “Green Hornet” had me falling out of my chair in shock and surprise, the idea of Darren Aronofsky writing and directing a Robocop remake (or re-imagining, I guess is what they’re calling it) was just so “out there” that I spent most of that day trying to make sure I wasn’t reading some crazy, parallel universe version of the Internet. But nope, it was true. Darren Aronofsky had been given the duty of writing and directing a remake of “Robocop”. Or is he? Nowadays, Aronofsky doesn’t sound so sure about the movie anymore, as it turns out.
Via Joblo, who relates Aronofsky’s phone call to, of all places, the Howard Stern show:
I heard some rumors about a month ago that things might not be going well in the universe of the ROBOCOP remake. Namely that Darren Aronofsky, who was hired this past summer to direct the [...]

I have to say, the whole idea of remaking “Robocop” perplexes me. The original still holds up pretty well. The sequels, now, those have always looked pretty awful, even back then, and I would imagine they would look even more awful now. But the original? You could show it on TV now and kids wouldn’t know it was made in 1987. Well, most kids, anyway. But what really perplexes me about the upcoming “Robocop” remake is that Darren Aronofsky has agreed to co-write and direct it. Yes, Darren Aronofsky. Of “Pi” and “Requiem for a Dream” fame, not to mention the unfathomably abstract “The Fountain”. How does a man with that kind of resume agree to remake a movie about a cyborg cop from Detroit?
Empire asks the hard hitting questions of Darren Aronofsky, and here’s what he said:
“It’s a real reinvention,” he told us, responding to those rumours that the movie would somehow follow on or be a direct [...]

MTV’s Movie Blog has been digging around the corpse of Robocop, which will now be revived by MGM with “The Fountain’s” Darren Aronofsky, of all people, behind the camera. Besides making it very clear that their reboot will not be a sequel, but instead an actual reboot in the lines of Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins”, producer Mike Medavoy (who also produced the original in ‘87), seems to indicate that the reboot will be Rated R, and not PG-13 as originally feared when the idea of a reboot surfaced many moons ago.
More from MTV about whether this is a reboot or a sequel:
And make no mistake, Fischer and his co-producer Mike Medavoy insisted: Their new “Robocop” is a reboot along the lines of “Batman Begins,” despite early online rumors to the contrary.
Asked where in the series the fourth film would fall, whether it would come after the first, second or third films in the series’ internal universe, Fischer and Medavoy were [...]

We’ve been reporting in the past about how MGM had announced their intentions to remake/reboot the “Robcop” franchise, and that they were looking at Darren Aronofsky as a possible director. To be honest with you, I never thought it would happen. After all, how could it? Aronofsky? The director of “The Fountain” doing a movie about a Detroit cop that gets whacked, and his brain transplanted into a cyborg? Well, actually, now that I think about it, yeah, why NOT Darren Aronofsky? Good news if you feel that way, because The Hollywood Reporter just confirmed that Aronofsky will, indeed, be directing “Robocop” for MGM with an eye toward a 2010 release.
THR has more:
“Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral filmmakers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood,” said Mary Parent, chairman of MGM’s worldwide motion picture group.
The original “RoboCop,” written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, was directed with camp adroitness by Paul [...]

Not all that long ago, MGM made public their plans to either remake or do a sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi actioner “Robocop”. To say that the fanboys weren’t happy is an understatement. (But then again, since when has the fanboys been happy about anything?) Then not that long ago, MGM officially introduced their “Red Dawn” remake, and there was a little tidbit buried in there about Darren Aronofsky potentially coming on board to direct the “Robocop” reboot. It now looks like MGM is dead set on getting the “Pi” and “Requiem for a Dream” director onboard their project.
This from Bloody-Disgusting:
Today we received word that MGM and Phoenix Pictures are close to pegging Darren Aronofsky to direct the latest “remake”, which we also discovered is actually a sequel! Here’s the logline: Present day Los Angeles, 20 years after the termination of the RoboCop program, the city decides to reinstate the program. If this all happens, I’d love to introduce [...]

Looks like MGM is making waves — unfortunately two of the projects they’re making said waves with are remakes. Totally pointless remakes, at that. But hey, the idea behind “Red Dawn” sounds kind of rad. And post-9/11, aren’t we all a little ready for more homeland invasion movies? THR has an article about MGM’s upcoming slate of films, including slating Joss Whedon’s “Cabin in the Woods” for 2009, with “Cloverfield” scribe Drew Goddard set to make his directorial debut on the film. Meanwhile, the “Red Dawn” remake is definitely happening, with MGM hiring Carl Ellsworth to pen the script and Dan Bradley to direct.
More on “Cabin in the Woods” — well not really, they seem to be going the “Cloverfield” route with this one, which probably means secretive shooting dates, fake movie titles, etc.
“This has to be considered the dream scenario for a first-time director,” Goddard said. “I get to make a movie with my best friend at a studio [...]

The 1987 original, directed by Paul Verhoeven (”Starship Troopers”), starred Peter Weller as a Detroit city cop in the near future who is killed by a gang of criminals, but his brain is rescued and inserted into a robotic cop — aka Robocop. Things get complicated when Robocop encounters the same gang that killed him, and memories of his old life returns.
The original was an orgy of over-the-top violence that was also probably one of the smartest action movies ever made in the ’80s, and still is to this [...]

The question isn’t whether MGM is going to do another “Robocop”, it’s whether, is it a remake or a sequel to the existing franchise? And considering the utterly insane trend of “rebooting” everything nowadays, I’m guessing it’s going to be a remake. A totally unnecessary and crapola of a remake, considering that the original (and even the first sequel) were hyper-violent films that could never, ever exist in today’s politically correct times. But hey, that’s the news: MGM is going to do another “Robocop”.
More:
An interesting press release about MGM seems to confirm the studio’s interest in a project we’d heard alluded to a while back. It dropped off the radar for a while (we were all hoping this one would just go away), but now, unfortunately, now it’s back.
Here’s a snippet from the release:
MGM is planning an exciting fall and winter release schedule. In partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM will bring new installments of two of its tentpole franchises [...]
