Promotional material for the Robert Rodriguez-produced, Nimród Antal-directed “Predators” is flying out the proverbial door at a mad rapid pace. Boom! There’s a teaser. Boom! There’s a behind-the-scenes featurette, all of which has appeared within the span of a few days. Now, thanks to the kind-hearted individuals at IMP Awards, we’ve got our virtual hands on a snazzy new poster that doesn’t have someone’s unsightly watermark plastered all over the it. The artwork’s pretty standard stuff, though it does look better than most posters these days. All things considered, I’m excited about the project. Here’s hoping they don’t screw the pooch.
“Predators” is set to invade North American theaters on July 7th.

I would normally save this for our sci-fi site SciFiCool.com, but since the “Predators” franchise defies all genre, thought I’d post it here as well. It’s the trailer that Robert Rodriguez promised would make its premiere at the shindig down over at SXSW, and was posted at the film’s official site. It’s your first look at “Predators”, starring Adrien Brody as a badass mercenary type (just go with it), and Laurence Fishburne in the role that clearly should have gone to Schwarzenegger if he wasn’t, you know, running California right now. The plot, as you may know, has Brody and various other deadly humans on Earth being abducted and taken to the Predator homeworld, where Super Predators hunt them down for sport. See, this is why I’m always bad at sports; no one ever abducts the wheezing, out of shape blogger to hunt, no sirree.
Starring Topher Grace, Adrien Brody , Danny Trejo, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga, Derek Mears, Brian Steele, [...]

Truthfully, if this news was coming from anyone but Vincenzo Natali, I would be worried. Scratch that — extremely worried. However, the man’s track record is damn near flawless, and, believe it or not, I trust his judgment. According to the folks at Fangoria, Natali is taking his upcoming sci-fi horror opus “Splice” back to the editing room for a few “cosmetic” adjustments. I doubt it’s anything substantial, but it’s worth noting nonetheless.
Here’s the scoop straight for the horse’s mouth, so to speak:
You’re going to see a slightly nipped-and-tucked version,” he reveals. “I’m actually going into the editing room next week, and if they’re true to their word, it’s just going to be cosmetic. It really comes down to Joel (Silver). He loves the movie and actually enjoys the parts that would scare most producers away. He’s being very courageous releasing this. There are also a few things I’m changing after seeing the film with an audience. I believe what [...]

As if I didn’t already have a full plate when it comes to the summer blockbuster season, Warner Bros. has announced that Vincenzo Natali’s upcoming sci-fi/horror outing “Splice” will attempt to lift a few dollars from my stylish leather wallet on June 4th. The film, which stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, chronicles the exploits of two scientists who boldly attempt to combine human and animal DNA in order to construct an entirely new species. As one might expect, things don’t unfold as planned. Naturally, yours truly will definitely be in attendance, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for me. I’ll be the pasty little guy in the middle of the theater wearing a tattered baseball cap and a Cosby sweater. Please, no autographs.

My knowledge of “The Incredible Hulk” saga pretty much begins and ends with the late-70’s television series starring Lou Ferrigno and the late Bill Bixby. As such, it’s safe to say that I’m fairly ignorant on the subject, and I’m not entirely ashamed to admit that fact in a public forum. For whatever reason, the comic books weren’t really to my liking; my days were spent reading back issues of “Captain America”, “The Amazing Spider-Man”, and “Groo the Wanderer”. A story about a guy who transforms into a hulking green brute whenever his anger becomes unmanageable still doesn’t sound like a good time, especially when it’s being adapted for the screen by Ang Lee. Yeesh.
Sam Liu’s spunky 2009 animated feature “Planet Hulk”, on the other hand, is based on a specific series of books in the Hulk universe. Needless to say, I haven’t read a single one. Does this matter? I’m not entirely sure, but as someone who knows next [...]

Are you as excited about Vincenzo Natali’s upcoming sci-fi chiller “Splice” as I am? Probably not, but that’s okay. In case you were wondering, I’m a little green that those lucky individuals attending Sundance this year will be treated to a screening of the movie, which looks, to be perfectly honest, outstanding. To help promote the film, Shock Till You Drop has posted a brand-spanking new clip to help sow the seeds of excitement. It’s pretty strange stuff, though I would have expected nothing less. However, if you have an aversion to pulsating organisms doing the nasty, I’d advise you to look away about halfway through the clip.
“Splice,” starring Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chaneac, David Hewlett, and Brandon McGibbon, chronicles the exploits of a team of scientists as they combine human and animal DNA to create a peculiar creature known as Dren. Hell eventually breaks loose.

If it’s not a remake, it’s a sequel. And if it’s not a sequel, it’s a bloody prequel. The outstanding individuals twittering diligently at Production Weekly are reporting this morning that the prequel to John Carpenter’s sci-fi/horror masterpiece “The Thing” will begin production sometime this March. The project, directed by Netherlands producer Matthijs van Heijningen, will follow the exploits of the Norwegian team who unearthed the nefarious alien life form from the depths of Antarctica. I’m sure there are people out there who are excited about this picture, but I’m certainly not one of them. The mystery surrounding the fate of the Norwegian scientists is one of the creepier elements of Carpenter’s film, and I’d hate for someone to screw that up. Sometimes not knowing anything is much scarier than seeing the whole sordid affair unfold right before your very eyes. I guess you could say I’m old-school like that. If you wanted to, anyway.

I’ve been excited about this project for quite some time, despite the fact that the previous entries in the series — excluding the ass-kicking original, of course — are the cinematic equivalent of sticking your both feet forcibly inserted into an industrial strength garbage disposal. If nothing else, “Universal Soldier: Regeneration” brings Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme back together for another round of superhuman sci-fi tomfoolery. Even if the movie is rancid from the basement to the rooftop, at least we get to see these two iconic action heroes smacking each other around for 90 minutes. For my entertainment dollar, that’s pretty darn snazzy.
While taking a peek around Twitch this morning, I happened upon the official trailer for director John Hyams forthcoming production. And while it’s an admittedly lame preview, it does provide potential viewers with enough goofy imagery to whet their proverbial whistle. Assuming, of course, the whistle in question was designed for this sort of silliness.

Indie filmmaking duo Michael and Peter Spierig’s upcoming vampire saga “Daybreakers” looks to be a nice departure from the romantic bloodsucker angle we’ve forced to endure as of late. I, for one, don’t mind the picture’s “Equilibrium” meets “The Matrix” aesthetic — I’m just looking for some decent action featuring a gaggle of rebel human freedom fighters battling their way through a world full of bloodsucking villains. The latest marketing tool for the flick’s January 8th release is designed to resemble a PSA, and while it isn’t as snazzy as some of the “Resident Evil” clips that were floating around a few years ago, it does a decent job of establishing tone and atmosphere. Placebo’s haunting cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up that Hill” doesn’t hurt things, either.
In case you missed it, here’s what “Daybreakers” is all about:

Much to my worldly dismay, I was one of the many people who missed Shane Acker’s animated tale “9″ in theaters earlier this year. Although word of mouth on the post-apocalyptic tale has been more than a little wonky, I’m still quite anxious to see the film for myself. According to home video gurus DVDActive, “9″ will find its way onto Region 1 DVD on December 29th, though I strongly suspect that this date will change at the 11th hour in order to efficiently maximize holiday sales figures. I’ve seen it happen time and time again. When it comes to post-Christmas December release schedules, you can always bet on a little rearranging. Always.
In addition to the movie itself, here’s a list of the special feature which accompany it:

The idea of a “Dune” remake bothers me, mostly because I’m a huge, salivating fan of David Lynch’s ambitious 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic novel. It’s certainly a flawed film, and I completely understand that it does not adequately capture the overall feel of the book. Be that as it may, Lynch’s version really strikes a chord with me. However, if someone were to once again tackle this sprawling tale for the big screen, my first choice would not be Peter Berg. Not that I have anything against the guy, mind you, but his slick Hollywood action films do not indicate to me that he’s capable of something as epic in scale as “Dune.” I could be wrong, and I’d love to see him prove it.
Unfortunately, that opportunity may never come to pass. According to trade resource Pajiba, Berg and his production company, Film 44, are no longer attached the project. No word as to why, exactly, he’s decided [...]

James Cameron has a lot riding on Avatar, it appears. There is always the possibility that he’ll be immolated by ardent critics if it doesn’t work out. Opinions, like mileage, may vary, and so it’s important to see the progress that’s being charted.
In the feature below, via Coming Soon, you can see the progress that he has made on the film, which offers a tantalizing look at some measure of the finished product. It has gotten very ambitious, obviously, although the quality isn’t great: it’s hard to see just how good it looks. You can blur the differences between Space Invaders for the Atari and Uncharted, too, if you try hard enough. Fortunately, there are high def trailers if you’re concerned about how the film looks. The more pertinent part of the feature contains interviews with cast and crew that give an idea about how it’s all coming together.

Well, it looks like Irish director Gary Shore saw them too and put them all into a blender, shook it up, and came out with “The Cup of Tears”. Okay, so the title could use some work (I originally thought this was some angst-filled indie movie about suicidal novelists or some such), but there’s no denying that the film’s trailer is truly kickass and is poised to storm its way into geek’s hearts everywhere in 2010. Consider my geekiness geeked out. Via Firstshowing.
Cup Of Tears follows a scorned geisha who creates a magical cup made of tears that causes any man who drinks from it to fall into a permanent sleep. One night the cup is stolen, setting off a chain of events that threatens civil war amongst the clans. Taro, a gifted samurai, sets out to [...]

See that owl standing outside your window at night? Yeah, not an owl. An alien. And it’s coming for you. Run!!! Ahem. That’s the cliffs note synopsis of Milla Jovovich’s new sci-fi/horror movie “The Fourth Kind”, opening next month, and the trailer of which has started to really creep me out the more I see it. The whole thing is supposedly based on a true story, complete with tape evidence to prove it. Here’s a quick preview of the madness.
1n 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document…until now.
Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is a provocative thriller set [...]

I’m sure there are fans of Albert Pyun’s cheesy 1982 fantasy epic “The Sword and the Sorcerer” somewhere out there, but I’m not one of them. Admittedly, it’s been several long years since I’ve had the opportunity to sit down with the movie, and my tastes have changed radically since I was 10. According to Twitch, Pyun and “Hercules” star Kevin Sorbo are preparing to unleash the sequel, “Tales of an Ancient Empire,” on a world that may not be as receptive to this sort of SyFy Channel tomfoolery as they were back in the 80’s. Sure, “The Sword and the Sorcerer” has a loyal cult following and, yes, fantasy movies are a pretty easy sell these days, but is a follow-up really necessary? Can Pyun recapture the campy magic of the original film? Who knows. More importantly, I’m not sure that I really care. Hey, at least I’m being honest.
Here’s the official synopsis:

If you haven’t seen Richard Stanley’s 1990 futuristic action flick “Hardware,” then shame on you. Thanks to the fine, upstanding folks at Severin Films, this hyper violent sci-fi thriller is available on Region 1 DVD for the very first time. To help promote this fantastic release, co-stars Lemmy (Taxi Driver) and Iggy Pop (Angry Bob) have reprised their respective roles for a series of kick-ass promotional clips, both of which are genuinely amusing. Even if you haven’t had the pleasure of investigating the film for yourself, they’re still a blast to watch. My advice: Pick up “Hardware,” as well as Stanley’s underrated horror flick “Dust Devil,” as soon as possible. They’re both definitely worth the investment.

Produced by “Pan’s Labyrinth” mastermind Guillermo del Toro and directed by cult Canadian filmmaker Vincenzo Natali (“Cube,” “Cypher,” “Nothing,”), the upcoming sci-fi horror outing “Splice” is shaping up to be something special. The film stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley star as a pair of scientists who fiddle with animal and human DNA to create a “beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera” called Dren. Chaos, of course, promptly ensues. Visually, the film looks absolutely fantastic, and promises to be one of Natali’s biggest features to-date. Which is kind of cool, as I’ve always felt Natali has been unfairly grossly overlooked by just about anyone. And if you haven’t had a chance to watch “Nothing” yet, add it to your Netflix queue as soon as humanly possible.
In the meantime, enjoy this clip from “Splice.” If that isn’t enough to satisfy your curiosity, Bloody Disgusting has a handful of exclusive pics to stare at. How nice of them.

2012 looks like the Playboy of disaster porn, the Debbie Does Dallas of destruction. Roland Emmerich will (hopefully) put himself out of a job after this because there will literally be nothing left to destroy. Either way, it’s not too late for someone to stop this man, if people pass on his film this time.
The scene, which you can see below, features just about every disaster movie convention and cliche stuffed into five minutes: as Los Angeles sinks into the sea, one family careens close to death, destruction directly behind, chaos ahead, all perfectly choreographed, and an escape from the city that looks conspicuously like something out of The Langoliers, as they watch the final moments of destruction from high in the air. The worst Arnold impersonator ever says, “The worst is over,” when it never is (at least the film is self-conscious enough to make fun of this convention).
I think that I’d rather live through the apocalypse than watch [...]

It seems like only yesterday that I discovered “Ichi the Killer” and cult Japanese director Takashi Miike. Even after all these years, I still haven’t seen all of the disturbing projects in his extensive filmography, and I seriously doubt I ever will. However, instead of continuing to deliver one sadistic motion picture after another, the talented filmmaker has focused his attention on more commercial fare as of late, which is really not that big of a problem. Mainstream Miike movies are weirder and more entertaining than 90% of the big-budget lard that clogs our cinematic arteries each and every year, though I currently cannot back up these claims with hard scientific data. And while his upcoming sci-fi actioner “Yatterman” — based on the 70’s television series of the same name — looks like an extended advertisement for cheap, plastic toys, I’m still curious to see what the guy will do with the material.
Here’s what it’s all about:

Hugh Jackman is a busy, busy guy. Where he gets his limitless supply of energy from is a mystery worthy of an extentive “Dateline” investigation. Only kidding. Dark Horizons is reporting today that Jackman has signed on to star in Shawn Levy’s upcoming science fiction epic “Real Steel,” which is based on yet another short story by Richard Matheson. Set in the distant future where professional boxing has been outlawed, the pic revolves around a former pugilist-turned-robot fight promoter (Jackman) who stumbles across a neglected mechanical brawler that never seems to lose a fight. Expect lots of computer-generated tomfoolery featuring an assortment of robot gladiators.
I’m thinking “Million Dollar Baby” meets “Robot Jox,” but I’m not going to hold my breath. After all, we are talking about the guy who directed “Night at the Museum,” “Just Married,” and the atrocious remake of “The Pink Panther.” Expectations should be adjusted accordingly.
Filming should commence this May.
