The boys at Collider took a big deep into the American Film Market and came away with some nice goodies, including official plot synopsis and first images from a couple of highly anticipated movies.
Let’s start with George Clooney in the hitman movie “The American”. The plot sounds a tad, well, generic, what with the whole “last job” deal, but I’m sure the movie is more than its plot (hopefully):
Jack (George Clooney) is an artful assassin with a lengthy track record, constantly on the move and always watching his back. When an assignment goes wrong and a lover ends up dead, he vows that the next job will be his last. This final obligation takes him to a picturesque town nestled amongst lush Italian hills, its historical piazzas bursting with life. But to Jack, every location is a trap and every person a potential threat. Still, he surprises himself, enjoying confessional conversations over Armagnac with an [...]

The last time I heard about “Shanghai” was months ago, when the film was announced along with the Weinsteins’ plans to remake “The Seven Samurai” (it has since been cleared up that this remake is more like an “inspired by”, using the basic story structure from the original and will be about mercs instead of samurais). Since then, nothing from the film has surfaced, which is odd, considering that the movie looks like a pretty expensive period piece. Today, the first images from the film, directed by Mikael Håfström (”1408″), have surfaced online, featuring stars John Cusack, Gong Li, and Chow Yun Fat looking dapper and very “The Killer”-ish. No two-fisted gunplay in these images, but one can hope.
The plot:
An American man returns to a corrupt, Japanese-occupied Shanghai four months before Pearl Harbor and discovers his friend has been killed. While he unravels the mysteries of the death, he falls in love and discovers a much larger secret that his [...]

Remember a few months ago when the Weinsteins (pictured, left) announced that they were going to be putting close to $300 million into an “Asian fund” to make Asian-based movies with American and Asian stars? Well, they’ve now revealed two of their projects: “Shanghai” from “1408″ director Mikael Hafstrom, and a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai” (pictured, below). Yes, a remake of the legendary master’s legendary movie. I shit you not. Read on for more details — if you dare.
Variety:
“Shanghai” will be directed by Mikael Hafstrom (”1408,” “Derailed”) from a script by Hossein Amini (”The Wings of the Dove”). The story, set in 1941 China, will star John Cusack, Gong Li and Ken Watanabe. Shooting will begin May 5 in London, then move to Thailand and possibly China. The film will be released in North America on Christmas Day.
“Seven Samurai” will start shooting in the fourth quarter for release in 2009. The cast will feature American, European and Asian [...]
