The last time we heard about “Shazam!” and his magic lightning bolt, the movie was dead. D-E-D. Dead. Or at least, that was according to screenwriter John August. As it turns out, the old axiom is true, Hollywood really doesn’t tell screenwriters anything, because the movie is still very much alive over at Warner Bros., and the studio has just paid another writer to work on the script, taking over where August and others left off.
Not only is the project still alive and in development, with writer Bill Birch now taking his turn on the scripot, but according to Variety “Get Smart” director Peter Segal is still onboard to direct and produce via his Callahan Filmworks.
“Shazam!” the movie will still follow Billy Batson, a young boy who transforms into the Superman-ish superhero Captain Marvel when he says the magic word “Shazam!” Word is, Warner Bros. plans on an Origins Story that stays faithful to the original comic books. So does [...]

The Hollywood Reporter’s got a big rundown of all the upcoming and in-the-pipeline movies from D.C. Comics, including the publishing house’s idea of putting three of its biggest writers, Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman on some of the properties to get them moving again with a fresh spin. They also mention that a live-action “Aquaman” movie is currently in development over at Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way shingle. But wait, fans of “Aquaman”, I wouldn’t get too excited about that. DiCaprio’s company is producing about five billion geek-friendly movies at the moment, and I don’t think a single one of them has ever actually gotten made. I could be wrong, of course.
Other D.C. films that are currently in the pipeline includes the much-delayed “Flash” movie, with Geoff Johns doing another treatment on the film, which originally boasted a script by Dan Mazeau. No word on what projects Morrison and Wolfman are working on over at Warner Bros., where all [...]

According to screenwriter John August via his blog, “Shazam!” the movie is dead. Buried. In the ground. At least, for now. August blames the current death of “Shazam!” on a number of factors, most notably the costly failure of the Wachowski Brothers’ “Speed Racer” (the carcass of which can still be smelt to this day), and the ginormous success of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” (which has, inevitably, made every Hollywood studio scrambling to copycat). August blogs that the future of “Shazam!” remains uncertain, but as far as he knows, the film is currently off the studio’s radar. As in, completely. At least, as far as he knows, which if you know Hollywood, the writer is always the last to know everything.
By “dead,” I mean that it won’t be happening. I don’t think it’s on the studio’s radar at all. It may come back in another incarnation, with another writer, but I can say with considerable certainty that it won’t [...]

Wait, Peter Segal’s “Shazam” was once in danger of not happening? And still is? Wow, I didn’t even know this. Anyways, director Peter Segal recently told Sci Fi Wire that while production has not started on the movie, and indeed no script has been written, he’s still sure the movie will happen. And oh yeah, the movie also has a new title now.
More:
But Segal said he didn’t want to rush the script for the movie, based on the venerable DC Comics Captain Marvel franchise. Segal also confirmed that the movie’s tentative title is now Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam.
“You don’t really want to rush something like Shazam,” Segal said. “I mean, it’s going to be a huge movie. I mean, huge in scope and in price. And so you want to make sure you have a solid script and really pay attention to the casting and all the preproduction that goes into that. So, you know, I think [...]

The Rock wasn’t sure who he should play in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie “Shazam”, so he let the readers of MTV’s Movie Blog decide. And they have. The Rock will be suiting up as Black Adam, the nemesis of the movie’s Captain Marvel. (Now I haven’t read the comics or anything, and I’m not familiar with the character, but isn’t calling the bad guy in your comics “Black Adam” kind of, you know, racist? But I digress.) Says The rock: “I sayeth Black Adam as well. I love that. I love that [fans] were so vocal.” The Rock goes on to say that he’ll now talk with the movie’s director, Pete Segal, about the role he wants to play. Word is what The Rock wants, The Rock will get, so I guess that means The Rock is playing Black Adam in “Shazam”.
More about the Black Adam character from Wikipedia:
Black Adam is a fictional comic book character whose morally ambiguous [...]

I’m not really sure how I feel about the upcoming “Shazam!” movie. I don’t really know all that much about it, and from everything I’ve heard, I’m not sure if it can be a good movie. Which might be entirely my fault, as my definition of a “good comic book movie” is one that takes the subject matter seriously — despite the origins of the movie being a comic book. I’m just not sure if a comic book movie about a boy who turns into the “world’s mightiest mortal” when he screams out “Shazam!” can be anything other than cheesy or campy. I feel the same way about “Shazam!” as I do about the upcoming “Green Hornet” movie, in fact.
But anyways, here’s what John August, writer/director of the upcoming “Shazam!” has to say about it (via):
August said that his work on “Chocolate Factory” likely led to this project: “Like Charlie, Billy Batson has an innate goodness, he’s is pure, [...]

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the World’s Mightiest Mortal, aka Captain Marvel? Hey, why not, I’ve seen worst casting for comic book movies. And as he’s proved in “The Rundown” and other ventures, Johnson has the physicality to pull off a superhero role. God knows he has the bulging muscles to do it. MTV reports that while the role is not yet Johnson’s (officially, anyway), Johnson seems to indicate that it was. If Johnson does end up with the role, he’ll be working off a script by John August (“Big Fish”) and be directed by Peter Segal (”50 First Dates”).
The immortal wizard Shazam, who dwells in the Rock of Eternity, seeks a champion to fight for the cause of truth and justice. He finds Billy Batson, a young orphan who was thrown out by a cruel and uncaring uncle. Despite the hardship he has faced in his life, Billy’s spirit has not succumbed to evil. Shazam sends an emissary [...]
