Those lucky enough to attend the Toronto International Film Festival will be the first ones to catch Michael Basset’s “Solomon Kane”, which is a part of the festival’s Midnight Madness line-up on September 16 at the Ryerson Theatre. Until then, check out a new image from the live-action adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s famous character that the studio has sent over.
With SOLOMON KANE, Conan and his other heroes, iconic American writer Robert E. Howard created the genre now known as “SWORD & SORCERY,” in the late 1920s and early 1930s. His work has spawned countless imitators and given rise to his influence in the fantasy genre which can be rivaled only by J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings). Now just shy of a decade later, SOLOMON KANE is poised to be the next great film trilogy.
Starring Pete Postlethwaite, James Purefoy, Samuel Roukin, Robert Russell, Ben Steel, Max von Sydow, Philip Waley, Anthony Wilks, Philip Winchester, Jason Flemyng, Patrick [...]

Who says you need to know Russkie to enjoy a decent “Solomon Kane” trailer? Mere days after the Russian version hit these here Interwebs, the English version has appeared on YouTube. Now that we can understand what everyone is saying, it gives us more of the plot, namely that ol Solomon has retired, but as is always the case, the bad guys keep pulling him back in. The lovely young girl batting her lashes at him certainly helps, no doubt.
The first part in a trilogy series, Solomon Kane is an epic adventure adapted from the classic pulp stories by Robert E. Howard, creator of “Conan the Barbarian.” Solomon Kane (James Purefoy) is a 16th Century soldier who learns that his brutal and cruel actions have damned him. Determined to redeem himself, Kane swears to live a life of peace and goodness but is forced to fight once more when a dark power threatens the land.

I like director Michael J. Bassett. He directed a couple of movies that I thought were highly underrated, the WWI horror movie “Deathwatch” and “Wilderness”. His latest is “Solomon Kane”, a fantasy-actioner based on the works of “Conan” author Robert E. Howard. Bassett and company showed a trailer for the movie at Comic Con, but alas I wasn’t able to catch it. Here it is, but unfortunately it’s dubbed in Russian. I’m not sure what they’re saying, but apparently it’s about some guy name Solomon. Or, “Solomonnnnnnnnnn!!!!”
Solomon Kane is a 17th century Puritan, a somber-looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms. His adventures often take him from Europe to the jungles of Africa and back.
From the looks of the trailer, he’s apparently wandered off into Middle Earth. Those are Orcs, right? And that giant fire guy at the end? Didn’t he battle Gandalph? Starring James Purefoy (last seen [...]

Among the films at Comic-Con this year is “Solomon Kane”, starring James Purefoy and based on “Conan” author Robert E. Howard’s fictional works. It’s written and directed by Michael J. Bassett, who has done a couple of movies that I dug, so I’m definitely going to give this one a spin. The film is scheduled to hold its panel on Saturday, July 25 in the infamous Hall H, which basically means your chances of getting into the panel to see swanking first footage from the movie is, well, it’s a toss-up, isn’t it?
Anchored by a star-making performance by James Purefoy (RESIDENT EVIL, ROME, THE PHILANTHORPIST), SOLOMON KANE is an action-packed, dark and intense story with a stellar supporting cast, including Pete Postlethwaite (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, THE CONSTANT GARDNER), Max Von Sydow (CONAN THE BARBARIAN, THE TUDORS), Rachel Hurd Wood (PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER), Alice Krige (DEADWOOD, SILENT HILL, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT) and Mackenzie Crook (PIRATES OF [...]

Michael J. Bassett’s “Solomon Kane” has gotten itself a poster, which was apparently posted on Bassett’s official site, who has since taken it down, but not before Moviehole snatched it and posted it on their site. The 2008 film, based on the character created by Robert E. Howard (who also created Conan), will star James Purefoy as the titular Solomon Kane, described by Wikipedia as “a somber looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms.” After seeing the poster: Van Helsing part deux?
More about “Kane” from Wikipedia:
His adventures, published mostly in the pulp magazine Weird Tales, often take him from Europe to the jungles of Africa and back.
Howard describes him as a somber and gloomy man of pale face and cold eyes, all of it shadowed by a slouch hat. He is dressed entirely in black and his weaponry consists of a rapier, a dagger, and a couple of [...]

I’m a fan of director Michael J. Bassett, and I’ve enjoyed both of his movies — the WWI movie “Death Watch” and the “Lord of the Flies”-styled “Wilderness” — so I’m looking forward to his take on Robert E. Howard’s Solomon Kane character. According to Fangoria via The Hollywood Reporter, Bassett is set to direct a movie based on Solomon Kane, “a 16th-century Puritan who battles supernatural evil”. I guess that’ll make this a horror movie, which is right up Bassett’s alley. And as is the fashion nowadays, the film will be the first of a planned trilogy, with the lead being played by James Purefoy, last seen as Mark Antony on the HBO show “Rome”.
